What makes this such a thrill is that Mr. Rios worked very hard to put himself in the position to be an every day player. The grand slam just adds to the joy.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 -
CTcard - 05-02-2023
Looking Back - Looking Forward
Back
- Stanford's main non-conference opponents are having mixed seasons.
Fullerton is mostly back where they have typically been. They are 26-13/17-4, lead the Big West, and I have seen them ranked as high as 12 (Collegiate Baseball)
Oklahoma is 24-20/9-9, tied for fifth in the Big 12.
Rice is 17-39/9-21 at ninth in Conference USA. They've really fallen on hard times.
CSU Bakersfield is 14-24/5-16, 10th in the Big West.
- Despite what sometimes feels to me like the pitching staff collapsing, Stanford's pitching has done better in conference play than overall. That's partly because one big problem is depth and the front-line guys go on the weekends, but things may be ticking upwards.
ERA, WHIP, BA against, all better in conference only games than overall.
- On the pitching front.
Good turnaround: Ryan Bruno last 6 outings: 9.2 IP, 0 runs, 3 hits, 2 BB, 18 Ks.
Bad turnaround: Matt Scott last 3 starts: 8.1 IP, 12 runs, 12 hits, 9 BB, 7 Ks.
- Team is 7-1 in one-run and extra-inning games.
- Stanford sits in first place in the Pac 12. ASU is 1/2 game back. Oregon is 2 games back. OSU is 2.5 games back.
Forward
- Stanford's remaining weekend series are @ASU (2nd in Pac 12), vs. UA (8th in Pac 12), @WSU (9th in Pac 12)
#2 ASU plays vs. Stanford, @USC (7th), vs. UCLA (6th)
- The best hitter for average in the Pac is Ryan Campos of ASU (0.413). He's coming back vs Stanford after about 3 weeks off due to an oblique injury.
The best hitter by slugging percentage in the Pac is Luke Keaschall of ASU (0.756).
ASU has the most runs/game and best slugging percentage (conference games only) in the Pac.
The pitching staff will be tested this weekend.
- ASU pitching has an ERA of 6.17 (conf. games only), 8th in the Pac.
- ASU easily leads the Pac in attendance - so should be a raucous, high scoring weekend. (Stanford just fell from 5th to 4th in attendance - apparently big crowds in Eugene last weekend for their series vs. ASU)
- Last year, Stanford's offense and HR production took off once May started. While this typically happens when the weather heats up, I certainly hope it happens as dramatically as last year.
It may help that Stanford's remaining conference opponents rank #8,9,10 in the conference in ERA.
--------------------------
Alberto Rios' emergence was mentioned above. It's been a great story.
Rios first two years at Stanford: 7 AB, 0 hits, 1 BB.
This year: 147 AB, 0.374 AVG; 1.125 OPS (leads team), 9 HR.
Last year Berrera and Graham emerged after getting little previous playing time. This year it has been Rios and Cobb. Next year?
I think this team would be much more solid if Tommy O'Rourke hadn't gone down. The juniors Dowd, Dixon and O'Rourke had been at similar levels - having another such arm this year would really have helped.

Just a quick update on our recruiting.
Joey Volchko RHP is a potential first or second round draft choice.
Aiden Keenan RHP 3rd or 4th round
We have 10 commits /signees and 6 in the 2023 class are pitchers

The only baseball recruiting site I know well is Perfect Game. It certainly has its flaws, and I refuse to pay for the extra info such as their detailed rankings of the current recruiting class players.
Some interesting things I have noted:
- Perfect Game appears to rank Keenan then Volchko as the top two in the class, but the details are behind the paywall.
- The top position player listed is Luke Lavin, a catcher from Laguna Beach. Stanford seems to be loading up on catchers lately (Rios, Saum, Moore now Lavin). Good thing baseball players can swap positions relatively easily.
- Stanford classes are always among the smallest listed. This is kind of a Stanford thing across sports, and most of us are familiar with the underlying reasons.
It's pretty dramatic in baseball. Stanford's classes are typically around 10, with the largest I see recently at 11. Most of our competitors are up towards 20 - at least before losses due to the draft, etc.
- In recent years, Stanford tends to be ranked somewhere in the region of #30 overall, but closer to 10 or so on average player ranking.
- The 2020 class (current juniors) was really amazing. Perfect Game ranked it #10 overall, #1 in average player rating (not sure if they rereank after players choose professional baseball or not). That class had 5 position players who all now start (Bowser, Troy, Park, Graham, Rios). Bowser and Troy were top 100. Graham and Rios were 500+ (essentially not ranked). The pitchers were Bruno (top 100), Dixon, Dowd, Other Bruno, O'Rourke and Pancer. That class had 11 players, the max in any Stanford class of the past decade or so.
- According to Perfect Game the highest ranked players currently on the Stanford team are Montgomery at #23 in 2021, Moore at #27 in 2022, and Bruno at #37 in 2020. Not unreasonable.

Troy still ranked as a first rounder. Baseball America
I pay for several recruiting sites but not baseball except Baseball/ Softball America.
At one point I thought Reynolds was our top recruit. So this could be a very good class
Yes the class rankings mean little given it includes those who go pro and not to the college they signed with
I look at D 1 but for a summary Perfect Game best

How is NIL money impacting on baseball recruiting and transfer portaling?
RE: Stanford Baseball 2023 -

More sloppy, sloppy baseball tonight. Two errors, one miscommunication by fielders and at least three boneheaded base running mistakes. Down 6-5 to Devils at the end of six.
And continuing another theme of the season, having guys who can mash the ball 450 feet makes up for a lot of blemishes! Rios with a 3-run shot to put the Card back on top, 8-6, at stretch time.

That was Rios’ second bomb of the day. Where would we be without him?

Mathews back out there for T8 despite being over 110 pitches. 6Ks from last 7 hitters faced!

I saw MLB.com had him at #21 going to the Cardinals. It would be cool to have a couple of ex-Card Cards in the infield there (Edman 2B).

Fun fact. The ASU scoreboard speed display has only 2 digits. Bruno’s 100 mph pitch displayed “00”.

It was also fun to see the pitch clock count down 3, 2, 1, 0, as the ball Rios hit sailed over it. Not quite sure why, but I got a kick out of seeing that.

8-7 lead, still hitting!

9-9, bottom of the 5th. reminds me of that CWS game against LSU. Or was it FSU?

Phew! Wild game. Dowd gets the win, giving up a mere one run in three innings.
Should be another slugfest tomorrow. Bad day to be a pitcher on either team.
Another rough outing for Scott, although given the opponent, it's understandable that he got a quick hook. Hope he hasn't lost his confidence.
