A team like Northwestern getting possibly sent to Tuscaloosa if chalk holds is far worse of an outcome than getting sent to a program that is still building its softball culture and has essentially only been competing for 5 years.

An interesting dichotomy.

“I kept seeing a coach with a Stanford shirt who kept coming to our games,” Schultz said. “I was really confused. Who is she here for?

“My coach went up to her after one of the games and asked, ‘Who are you here to watch?’ And she said my name. My reaction was, ‘No way. Not the actual Stanford University.’”

LMU vs Florida at 3:00 pm today.   Stanford vs Long Beach State at 6:00 pm on ESPNU.

This is how I would handle the pitching assignments so it definitely won't happen this way.  Start Krouse against LBS.  At the first sign of trouble have Vawter come in relief.  Start Canady against Florida.

I have a two prong approach to cheering this weekend.
1.) Cheer for Stanford to win.   2.) Cheer for Duke to lose.

Duke beat George Mason this morning 2-1 and didn't look particularly  impressive IMO.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - BobK - 05-19-2023

2-1 LMU bottom of 5

LMU is a good team. Florida has already lost to Fullerton (in CA) this year,
so another very good California mid major team is giving them their all.

Florida can definitely still win this game and this series, but this is not an impressive performance from the Gators.

The pitch that led to the go-ahead RBI single was so flat and had so little spin it could and arguably should have been a home run.

And the LMU pitcher's changeup is 47 MPH, and all Florida could manage was a single. If Stanford can play its game and hit,
it will have a good chance against all three teams in its regional (Card defeated LMU in first game of season, though the Lions were competitive at least early on).

Florida scores 2 in the bottom of the 7th to win 3-2. Close play at the plate for the winning run. But no question safe

Greatness tonight from Vawter to start Stanford's regional action. She already has 6 strikeouts through 4 innings of work for her. Cardinal coming to plate in B4 in scoreless contest.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - Softball Fan - 05-19-2023

Stanford up 1-0 after six innings.  Stanford hitting does not look World Series caliber.  LBS lost 21 games this year.

Vawter pitched the entire game; over 100 pitches.

UCLA lost to Grand Canyon.

But thankfully the pitching does. And at this stage, it is down to matchups. A potent Florida offense that struggled with the heavy Bay Area air against either Vawter or Canady.

Long Beach also isn't an ordinary 4 seed; they have a pretty storied program history with multiple WCWS appearances, were coming into tonight's game on a 8 game winning streak, and they needed all of them to win their conference regular season title and earn the auto bid.

Fantastic, thanks for posting.    I'm getting pumped up to watch it.  Does this mean ESPN brass think Stanford softball is bringing in viewers or is the game originally scheduled on ESPN at that time cancelled due to weather?

No, this is an organic decision. One factor playing to our favor as far as getting the game on ESPN is the 2pm PT start time; this is by far the latest starting 1-0 game today (along with UCLA's and Washington's regional). Most 1-0 games have either already finished or are playing now. As such, a Stanford-Florida matchup in a 1-0 game is far more appealing than most elimination 0-1 games featuring mostly 3 and 4 seeds.

With the Texas-Texas A&M game running long, Stanford-Florida will start on ESPN News, and move to ESPN
once the game in Austin has finished.

Stanford game now over to ESPN.

Canady rolling so far. Let's hope the Stanford offense can take advantage of what they are getting in circle right now.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - d4cohn - 05-20-2023

Some special stuff from Canady against a potent UF offense. 7K's through 3 innings,
and some situational hitting has the Cardinal leading 1-0 heading to B3.

Stanford sends a giant statement, putting up a 5 spot to blow open the 1-0 matchup against Florida.

Stanford leads 6-0, this contest is all but over through 3.

RE: Stanford Softball 2022-2023 - d4cohn - 05-20-2023

Some performance by the Cardinal today in all facets (pitching, offense, and defense). This is a WCWS
if not deep OKC run level performance from Stanford today, just dismantling the Gators.
