NiJaree Canady with a brilliant performance, and Stanford's bats continue their surge as Stanford wins the one that counts of the 4 matchups with Bruins. Stanford is on to the National Semifinals against #1 Texas, starting at 4:00pm PT tomorrow on ESPN2.

Hey Bruin traitors, nice season but . . .

Truly a team with heart.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - martyup - 06-02-2024

So glad Canady got the offensive support she needed to notch this win.  She is clearly the MVP in the sport.  However, I fear it's asking too much of her to beat TX twice.  We have to figure out how to score on TX and another pitcher will need to give Canady quality support.

No matter what happens from hear on, this team has made its mark on these World Series and they have a bright future ahead.

I imagine the plan is to pitch Canady for both games and never pull her

The ump has one thing we don't: sound.  The ump signals the ball struck her left forearm.  It couldn't hit there, but one question is, did it FIRST strike her left fingers while on the bat or did it first strike the base of the bat.
I don't know if a struck-by-pitch is reviewable, but I'm glad Stanford didn't ask for a review.  The video isn't clear on what it hit.

At 70mph, the ball travels 3.4 feet every 30th of a second.  I think this is the best view you'll get
[Image: 20240602-7th-2out.jpg]
I see a bit of the bat between the ball and the left hand. Whether  the ball is not yet to the bat or is already past the base of the bat seems impossible to know, or if the ball has already bounced off the base of the bat is likewise impossible to know.

To my mind, the movement of the bat that I see in the slow motion view from behind the pitcher makes me think it hit the bat.  But that is only an impression.

So, while I disagree with the call, the call would not be overturned.

There are details in the rules about where the ball and the batter are (presumably at the time of contact), For this pitch in the 7th inning, the ball appeared to be entirely in the batter's box (hence 11.13.1 applies)

However, for the 1st inning call where the Stanford batter was hit by a (called) ball that was not entirely in the batter's box, so 11.13.2 applies, Appendix A "Feet and Lines Chart" indicates "Batter at bat/ball contact" has a Permissible Position "within" (vs "in/on") the "batter's box". By the definition and the overhead view, she was within the batter's box. She did (and announcer agreed) make a move to avoid being hit. So, did the umpire make the right call?

The rule says "any part of the batter or their clothing while THEY are in the batter's box". It s not "while the batter is in the batter's box" but "any [touched] part of the batter is in the batter's box". Note that any of the touched part has to be in the batter's box, not all. The overhead view supports that the part of the ball furtherest from the plate (a part that did touch her) is outside the (outer line of) the batter's box. So, I think that call was correct also.

Quote:11.13.1 A batter is awarded first base when a pitch, neither swung at nor called a
strike, is entirely within the batter’s box and it strikes the batter or their clothing.
No attempt to avoid being hit by the pitch is required; however, the batter may
not obviously try to get hit by the pitch. (See Rule 11.13.3.1.)
11.13.2 A batter is awarded first base when a pitch neither swung at nor called
a strike touches any part of the batter or their clothing while they are in the
batter’s box, except as noted in Rule 11.13.3 that follows.
11.13.3 The hit batter shall not be awarded first base under the following
circumstances:
11.13.3.1 The batter made no attempt to avoid the pitch (which is not
entirely in the batter’s box) or they obviously tried to get hit by the pitch
(regardless of its location)
(Reminder, the batter's hands are NOT considered part of the bat)

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - PVTree - 06-03-2024

Was she over the plate, outside the hitter's box when the ball made contact? I don't recall seeing that angle from above.

As I recall there was one shot that seemed to make it pretty clear that the fronts of her shoes were outside the box.  I think it was a straight on shot as opposed from above.

Final Four two years in a row!  I sure hope we can give Mike White some payback.

Based on the weather delay impact from yesterday it appears a Florida win today would be super helpful.
If OK wins then both the Stanford v Texas and the if necessary game would happen tonight.

However if Florida wins then both if necessary games (if necessary) would be on Tuesday.

Given Stanford's lack of pitching depth that alone is enough for me to say "Go Gators" (at least for today).

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - martyup - 06-03-2024

Well, Florida beat Oklahoma.  So, if we win today then we play Texas again tomorrow.  That's a pretty big boon given that we have only one effective pitcher.  Let's take down Texas!  GO CARD!

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - Vandelay - 06-03-2024

Sooners got spanked!  9-3.  Love to see that.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - d4cohn - 06-03-2024

NiJaree Canady gets the ball once again, and she is showing so much heart in the circle. Battling a strong Longhorns lineup and a pretty warm evening (just over 80 degrees + humidity), she ends in the inning on a strikeout. Cardinal bats coming to plate in B1.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - d4cohn - 06-03-2024

Still no score heading to the 4th. River Mahler being robbed of a basehit on a great play by the Texas center fielder to lead of B3.

NiJaree pitching just a great game so far. The announcer Kevin Brown keeps harping on the lack of strikeouts, but just because NiJaree is a strikeout pitcher, doesn't mean she can't get them other ways. At this point in the season, we will take 21 outs anyway we can get them.

Hopefully, we only need 21 outs.

Also, NiJaree must have heard the announcer as she has struck out the last four batters she faced (on only 15 pitches).

Thanks BC. I had 9 innings on my mind. Scoreless through 5.

What a play Taryn Kern!! She gets her defense out of the inning after a missed opportunity and a team miscue.

And then we follow that up with Kern getting called out on strikes because she took too long getting into the box. Ugh.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - Spiny_Norman - 06-03-2024

I think Stanford misplayed the rundown. I was taught that you a run a baserunner back toward the base they left. Never chase a baserunner toward the base they are trying to reach. Throw the ball to your teammate right away and let them chase them down. Stanford chased the baserunner toward home then threw the ball late. That mistake compounded a fielding error which was enough to end Stanford's season.

Still, congratulations to Coach Allister, the team and the staff on a great season! Lots of highlights.
