Stanford's Austin Slater had three hits in three official at bats with two walks, making him five for five in plate appearances, during the Giants' 7-0 win over the Diamondbacks. Slater's now batting .284, with an OBP over .400 and an OPS of .920.
Longoria had three hits, Posey and Solano had two each. Dereck Rodriguez was called up and pitched seven innings of shutout ball. Coonrod and Abad looked good.
The Giants and Diamondbacks are now both 61-61. Giants picked up a full game on the #2 WC slot, and are now 3.5 back.
Could be, maybe.

If this is not a fluke, and Rodriguez can be at least a .500 pitcher, that will greatly help. Without something along those lines, there is just too much drag to overcome.

The Giants are 3.5 back and will need to leapfrog the Cubs, the Phillies, the Diamondbacks, the Mets and the Brewers. Nationals are looking pretty solid for the first wild card, they're 1.5 ahead of the #2 team.
Giants are #26 in runs scored, but have crept up in ERA to #10. Pitching has been improving.
Giants need to sweep Arizona, Cueto needs to come back, and Slater needs to keep on keepin' on...

Four of the top eight players with the highest career on-base percentages have played at least one season for the Giants. Name all four. Bonus for naming the top OBP career batter without looking it up.

The 12 HR combined was not a record, Mick. These same D-Backs and the Phillies combined for 13 dingers earlier this season.
What an insane game. Was watching the highlights on MLB's YouTube channel and saw it was 7-2 in 8th inning, thinking how the hell was the final score 10-9?
It sure would be great to see Logan Webb go 6+ innings and give up 3 or fewer runs tonight. Going into this series I saw the Giants as still alive if they 2in 3/4 in Arizona. It's now doable with Bum on the mound tomorrow.
The Giants have no named starters not named Samarzdija and Bumgarner for the next 6 games after today. That's not too inspiring.

If one or more of the "AAA" pitchers can somehow step up and have at least a .500 record, the Giants have a chance. The starters named Samarzdija and Bumgarner will need to be near perfect, but that is at least somewhat plausible. If the three remaining starters (whoever they actually turn out to be) can collectively win half their starts, the Giants almost certainly do make the wildcard. The "AAA" guys can even be somewhat worse than that and the Giants still would have a shot. However, you are absolutely correct that the past performance in those slots has not been exactly inspiring. Hopefully Logan Webb can provide some help there. If he can, the Giants may get on a roll, and as they proved already, they can play very well at least for a month. That may be enough. Hopefully, they can play "meaningful" baseball at least to the very end of the regular season!

Samarzdija and Bumgarner have a combined record of 17-16 (with 18 no-decisions). It would be great if they were near perfect for the next six weeks, but that seems pretty optimistic.
