Lots of replays of the HPBs. They didn't lean in the way Fullerton was famous for once upon a time. The efforts to get out of the way might have been a bit anemic. More notably, the one the revisited on replay didn't quite look like it hit the guy at all. Very close.

I have lived in AZ and in the humid east. I know that dew point does matter a lot, but is very much NOT the only thing that matters.
The low humidity makes it feel a little better sitting around, but makes dehydration happen faster and much sneakier since you're not necessarily covered in sweat. Of course they'll be sucking down fluids non-stop.

FYI, you don’t get used to 105 in the sun. If that’s real, everyone Will suffer.
You most certainly can get used to 105 in the sun. In today's world, almost nobody in the USA does because they stay inside air conditioned spaces most of the time and if necessary scamper between them. However, those who can't do so and work outdoors do absolutely get used to it. You know how to stay hydrated adequately and you don't really feel the heat. That makes doing whatever you are out there doing lots easier than it is for people who really notice the heat.

Well, that’s good to know. So it won’t be a problem?  Or are only Texas Tech players able to adjust?  BTW, in my younger years, I worked outdoors in Texas Summers . Back then, you could drink all you wanted to and you wouldn’t really adjust to 105. 100, even 101 , yes, but not 105.  Maybe it was all in the head but no on got used to it.

It will make a difference to the players on both teams. It will be a physical as well as mental issue and since  everyone  will be talking about it, the “in the head” issues will be there. I dont think it will determine who wins, though . I certainly hope not.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 06-09-2021

The forecast is now 107 for Friday and yes it will affect the players on field turf.

RE: Stanford Baseball - slide - 06-09-2021

if I am following along correctly, if a higher rated seed than Stanford (#9 overall) loses, how does Stanford not get to host a super regional?

I expect the heat will not determine who wins or really affect it much. Tech players don't regularly spend 8 hours out in the sun. They aren't "acclimated" to it because they don't have to be. Lots of air conditioned places (like essentially everywhere, including your car). Baseball doesn't require high level continuous physical activity either. It requires bursts followed by idle periods. The pitchers are the ones most likely to be affected. The heat will be noticed by all but TT will not have a big advantage.

And, if any Stanford coach should be complaining about a game time, it should be Esquer, IMO. Playing in the middle of the day with temps to reach 105, is just plain reckless.  It's not just the players on the field, but the fans being asked to sit in the stands. It's literally dangerous.

I believe the decision was made by the NCAA rather than the Big 12 or TTU... I fully agree though, with as hot as it is supposed to be here in Lubbock this week it's crazy to schedule midafternoon games. Pretty much all TTU fans are heated about the game times as well (no pun intended).

It'll definitely be dangerous for players, coaches, and fans. Our field is turf so I would guess if it hits 104 as projected, the field will be closer to 115-120. I feel like Rip Griffin Park/Dan Law Field runs hot anyways, so it will feel much warmer in the ballpark and it will be packed... Not to sound morbid, but I would guess there are several of fans that will end up getting a little medical attention from the on-site paramedics due to the heat. I've seen people need some help because of heat when it's mid-upper 80's in our ballpark.

The tournament is set up with a pre-determined bracket (as are most, but not all NCAA tournaments). Thus seeds 1-16 host regionals, with the bracket such that superregionals are the winners of the regionals hosted by: #1 vs #16, #2 vs #15, #3 vs #14, #4 vs #13, #5 vs #12, #6 vs #11, #7 vs #8, and #8 vs #9.

Since #8 Texas Tech won their regional, and #9 Stanford won their regional - Stanford plays Texas Tech at Lubbock.

If the tournament had been reseeded after the regionals round, Stanford would have squeaked in as a host as one higher seeded team lost (#6 TCU). But, that has never been the way the baseball tournament has been run.

RE: Stanford Baseball - BobK - 06-09-2021

Thank you TTU. I also believe it will be tougher on the fans than the players. That’s certainly my experience

The scheduling decisions were made by the NCAA, which really means by ESPN. You can find the full super regionals schedule here:
Super Regionals.

You can see the TV logic for Friday. ESPN gets games at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 EDT.
The weekend gets more crowded, as there are 8 games to fill in.

On Saturday there are evening/nights games in Tucson (10 pm EDT), Austin (9 pm), Knoxville (7 pm).
Saturday Stanford-Texas Tech is on ESPNU at the same time Arkansas-NC State is on ESPN2.

I'd go with local Lubbock weather stations over national weather services/broadcasts... The high still sits at 104 for Friday, but either way... Friday will be extremely hot. As someone else mentioned, humidity can play a factor but Lubbock is mostly known for dry heat rather than humidity. For the sake of fans, when it gets this hot here in TX the operations division and athletics put out refueling/hydration stations around the venues that offer free ice water... Not much, but better than nothing.

RE: Stanford Baseball - fullmetal - 06-09-2021

The dry heat will help, as sweat will evaporate much more readily and have a greater cooling effect.  But 107F isn't comfortable, not even for this lifelong Texan.  Swing and a miss from the NCAA there.  Make the NCAA schedulers attend *that* super regional.

RE: Stanford Baseball - Papa John - 06-09-2021

Thanks, CTCard. Tucson has forecasted highs of 105, 109, 111, 112 Friday through Monday, so that plus Pacific time means that they get the 9 pm ET slot. ESPN would have needed to double up at 9 pm for TTU-Stanford, and I guess there's other programming they'd rather show during prime time.

As best as I can tell, the NCAA doesn't have heat index thresholds above which games will be suspended until the temps cool down. They suspend play when lightning is in the area, but not when heat conditions are dangerous. I find this surprising. Or maybe I became a weather wimp when I moved to California.

RE: Stanford Baseball - StanfordMatt - 06-09-2021

Is there a way I can get an alert for when this thread goes back to talking about baseball and not 30 posts about weather? Yes, it’ll be hot. I think we all get that lol.

RE: Stanford Baseball - fullmetal - 06-09-2021

Thread drift is a *time-honored* tradition here.  We do converge back to the topic at hand when events warrant it :)

RE: Stanford Baseball - OutsiderFan - 06-09-2021

The only thing this thread needs now to complete its drift is a post from Phogge about how they dealt with heat back in the 1960s when the players wore flannel unis.

Back in the day, players put iced cabbage leaves under their caps.

I'm worried it will be more than just "hot."
Dangerous sounds more accurate - for players and fans.  Serious medical  ramifications are readily foreseeable.
The NCAA should step in and say first pitch is at 7:00 p.m. local time.
Period.

Fair enough. Maybe TTUAlum can give us the scoop on the Red Raiders and the atmosphere at Rip Griffin/Dan Law? Most importantly, do they have fans like the "Wooh!" Anteater fan?
