Hmmmm....the prospect of new #2 overall 5'11 PG Kiki RICE choosing Stanford becomes even more salivating, as this would mean Stanford gets #1 and #2, the best inside-outside combination. The most recent would be UConn with #1 Breanna STEWART and #2 Moriah JEFFERSON ten years ago, and that 1-2 punch produced 4 consecutive national championships for UConn!
I'm surprised UCLA commit 5'5 PG Londynn JONES dropped from #9 to #22. She performed very well as the backup PG for the USA U16 Naitonal Team that won gold in 2019 (teammate of BETTS and RICE). I kind of compare her game with # 6 overall 5'5 Diamond JOHNSON from the Class of 2020, who played very well as a teammate of BETTS with the USA U19 National Team that won the gold at the World Championships last month.

2 others on the big movers list caught my eye: 2023 #3 ciera toomey is a golfer as well. more fun to golf at stanford than uconn.
2024 #17 harper peterson, a 6'3" stretch forward from california, has offers from ivies so may like our academics.

How many do you think we can sign in this class? Sorry, you probably said that already. I'm sure it's fuzzy because we may or may not extend scholarships to returners for the extra COVID year.

The extended scholarship is this season for fall and winter sports. Next season back to 15. We have 17 and 6 are academic Srs or grad students.

I assume those three will be out of eligibility, which means that we are guaranteed of having at least one spot. Then, we have three with eligibility remaining:
Lexie Hull, Sr.
Lacie Hull, Sr.
Jenna Brown, RS Jr.
I think one or both Hulls would be welcomed back if they wanted to come back, but Lexie may have WNBA ambitions and my guess is she is draftable (this mock draft: https://www.lines.com/wnba/drafts has her in the third round). Jenna Brown had a formal redshirt, that may figure into her planning. How much of a contributor she will be is a bit of an unknown. She may reinsure herself or have long term lingering effects, or she could get healthy and become our starting point guard.

The unfortunate reality is there aren't enough fans for WNBA. The entire league would go under if it wasn't being subsidized by the NBA. IMO the WNBA needs to consolidate. For me, I love watching Stanford WBB but have no interest in the WNBA. You have to look at women's basketball as an entirely different sport than men's basketball to enjoy it.

maybe, but some women think it has a lot to do w marketing. if i'm not mistaken, women's tennis gets fans, women's golf has increasing viewers. don't women's swimming and beach volleyball get as many viewers as the men's?

I agree -- marketing and TV availability are crucial. No fans? Well, how can you be interested if there is little media coverage. Sports Illustrated, for example, had a great article a while back about how the WNBA doesn't get attention etc., and in the same issue, no article about on-going games. Amazing! The SF Chron mostly puts WNBA on the back page in the Digest Section. Fans follow what they think is popular and what they CAN follow -- and they won't if the media don't give decent cover. Yes, the WNBA can succeed and will IF they are respected and get the attention they deserve. The game is wonderful and when people watch, they are impressed. As for the NBA subsidizing, I'm not so sure about that in all cases. To some extent, it depends on acocunting.

The NBA loses $12 million per year on the WNBA and has for decades. With regard to marketing and TV availability, the NBA has spent many millions on ads and promotions on behalf of the WNBA and has structured its TV deals whereby in essence they are paying ABC and ESPN to televise WNBA games, so they have really invested in every sense. At some point people either watch the games or they don't. National awareness of the WNBA is very high, but you can't force people to become fans.
