NOTHING about trading for him. ONLY... imagine how he would perform in Shanahan's system.

The morning guys on KNBR were talking about that possibility this morning, allegedly he's being shopped. Think it was after the segment with Lynch. . . .

He is being covertly shopped -- team management says they aren't "actively" shopping him -- but it is clear that they are expecting a pretty big haul in exchange for McCaffrey.  He's only played in 26 of the last 49 games.

I’m not sure they expect THAT big a haul. Team would be taking on a big contract.  Plus the injury risk.

Rams might be a possibility.  They desperately need weapons.  They keep hoping Cam Akers turns it up.  But it hasn’t happened.  And the Rams are very aggressive on the trade front.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 10-15-2022

The 2021 Rams are like someone who mortgages their future in order to impress others with a big house and cars they can't really afford.  Sure, they got the experience of living large, but now the bill is coming due and the repo man is coming.

No team has more barely scraped by to win a championship than the 2021 Rams. I guess there is some level of respect you can give for throwing all your chips in to live large once, but as a Rams hater, I really wanted their bet to not pay off, and then watch them backslide without a Lombardi Trophy. That's why Tartt dropping that 4th Quarter pick in the NFCCG was soooooo terrible and something that will bother me forever.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 10-15-2022

"Bother me forever." Maybe a shrink can help. Defeats are part of life. If you're playing learn from it. If you're a fan so what? Change the channel and watch something like Singing in the Rain. Bound to make you feel better son.

When I watch The Play I LOL watching the genius Stanford players stand around and back off just like Fields did last week. Served them right.

Dodgers are about to experience the same, I suspect...

They won a Super Bowl…..So, it worked.

It’s funny, we always hear about Tartt’s drop. But JG threw an out that was jumped by a Rams CB. If he catches it he waltz’s into the EZ. He too dropped it.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - BostonCard - 10-15-2022

Toronto did that a few years ago and mortgaged the future for an NBA championship, and it worked. Given the rarity of winning a championship, the gamble is probably worth it.  Then again, given how idiosyncratic the road to a championship is, you probably want multiple shots on goal.  Sacrificing the future for a title is worth it if you win, but it sucks if you have neither a future nor a title to justify it.

I wish you were right.  But the Dodgers still have one of the best farm systems in baseball.  They may drop some -particularly if they lose Tr Turner. But I bet they sign a big FA.  Rodon perhaps. And they’ve done it now in the regular season for 10 years. Course they choke like the dogs they are come playoffs. Still no true Championship since ‘88.

Well.  Friedman has stated the their salary situation is “unsustainable”.  Look for LA to cut back this off-season.  Goodbye Bellinger and maybe Turner and/or Kershaw.  Hello to guys from their very fat farm system.  They definitely need reinforcements to shore up their rotation.  Rodon?  Might be too rich for them.

Bottom line for the Dodgers - too much emphasis on the regular season not enough on what is needed to win a short series. As Sabean used to say (paraphrasing) - just get me to the playoffs and everything will be fine. SF proved that to be the case with great pitching, timely hitting and a solid defense.

The top 4 seeds in the NL are gone. Sabes was right!

(Oops, error, error, this really should be in the Giants thread).

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - Phogge - 10-16-2022

Having depth is fine but not when 2/11 of your defense is missing. Time and time again the Falcon RB was hit at the LOS and still made three or four yards making 2nd down that much more makable. Kinlaw is a brobdingnagian bust simply because he can't stay healthy foreboding a short career. Niners need to make a trade for a DJ Jones type before the deadline and be prepared to give up a good player for it. Anybody know how long Hurst will be out?

I believe the defense is missing five starters, not two (Bosa, Moseley, Kinlaw, Ward, Armstead).  Offense is missing Williams, Brunskill, McKivitz

Garoppolo threw two INTs, the patchwork defense couldn't stop the Falcons at all, and Mariota's rating was 144.6, virtually perfect.

Ugh.

Panthers have reportedly named their asking price for Christian McCaffrey | KNBR

Seems a tad steep, much as I like McCaffrey.

The 2022 Niners projected starters on Offense and Defense...

Bolded = Out at one point against Falcons

QB Lance
RB: Mitchell
RB: Juzcyzk
TE: Kittle
WR: Aiyuk
WR: Samuel
LT: Williams
LG: Banks
C: Brendel
RG: Burford
RT: McGlinchey

DE: Bosa
DT: Armstead
DT: Kinlaw
DE: Ebukam
LB: Greenlaw
LB: Warner
LB: Al-Shaair
SS: Hufanga
FS: Ward
CB: Ward
CB: Moseley

That's HALF the team's projected starters. Just stupid ridiculous. How can you possibly assess a team missing such an absurd number of starters?  Name one NFL team that could win a game with 11 of its projected starters out.

Agree, OF. Plus, the new OL starters are learning as they go.

So, what.  Injuries are part of the game. “Next man up”. Injuries didn’t cause a fumble for a TD.

Well then they can forget it.  No one is going to trade multiple firsts for a RB.

RE: OT: 2022 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 10-17-2022

Good coaches don't use injuries as excuses, but fans aren't coaches. We don't have to pump back-ups with confidence and tell them they are expected to perform at the same level as starters. And we aren't naive enough to think injuries - especially at a certain scale - don't make a difference.

Every team in every sport misses players due to injuries, but the number the Niners have is outside the range of normal and no sane person could ever claim they don't significantly weaken the team's performance.

No, injuries don't cause a fumble, but they do drastically shrink the margin of error. If all 22 starters are playing, one fumble is not devastating. If half of those 22 are not playing, a fumble can be the difference between winning and losing.

But I think we can see a pattern through all Niners losses.  The Offense is responsible for every one. Even with a Defense that was playing without 7 starters in the second half at Atlanta, it held the Falcons to less than 300 yards and just 21 points. The Niners offense scored just 14 points  and gave up 7.

Losses in 2022:

Niners 10 Bears 19
Niners 10 Broncos 11
Niners 14 Falcons 28 (21 allowed by D)

Wins in 2022:

Niners 27 Seahawks 7
Niners 24 Rams 9
Niners 37 Panthers 15

Few NFL teams win games they don't score at last 20 points. Shanahan is suppose to be an offensive genius. Maybe he is, but his team is not nearly as well coached on Offense as it is on Defense because it makes way, way more mistakes on that side of the ball than it does on Defense, even in a game the Defense was missing 7 starters.

Now we know (if we didn’t already) why SF made the deal to draft Lance.  The O will never be anything more than serviceable until the 49ers field a dynamic QB.  Until then, mediocrity is all fans can hope for….

Lynch has done a much better job on the defensive side.  Offensively they have mediocre talent.  A below average offensive line (that’s with Williams), Running back by committee.  A pedestrian QB. Kittle is a great blocker. But I think he’s lost a little on the receiving end.  Deebo is terrific. Juice is a great FB (but that’s not a manjorvNFL position these days). Aiyuck is an enigma.

It’s not coaching.  It’s talent.

Mick, maybe my math was confusing. At one point NINE STARTERS were out. I make careful looks because I have to know who's on then field for each play. It's my living son.
