Break out the brooms. An important and impressive sweep for the Cardinal. Got to believe this is going to help the RPI.

Joey Volchko RHP is a potential first or second round draft choice.
Aiden Keenan RHP 3rd or 4th round
We have 10 commits /signees and 6 in the 2023 class are pitchers
I saw Volchko pitch a few weeks ago. 17 years old with a grown man's body. 96 mph fastball with a curve ball, slider, and change up.
13 strike outs, one hit, and no walks in 7 innings. The kid can hit as well. I counted 15 pro scouts at the game, and I understand only the top
scouts are coming to see him now. He has signed with Stanford, but I'm concerned we may never see him.

CTcard - 05-09-2023
Weekend Notes:
- ASU is a good offensive ball club. Going into last weekend they were first or second in the conference in most offensive statistics.
Our non-frosh pitchers handled them well, with a 3.4 ERA over the weekend.
- Unfortunately, the frosh pitchers (Scott and Dugan) struggled. They managed 4.1 innings and a game ERA of 18.7.
- Worried whether Scott will get things back on track this year. That's now 3 starts in a row where he hasn't got through the third inning. Though, curiously, he didn't allow a first inning hit or run in any of those three.
- Worried about Matthews' workload. He's thrown over 110 pitches in each of his last 10 outings. He's been great, but that is a lot of work.
- Jake Sapien seems to have taken over the DH spot. He went 5-12 for the series vs ASU including 2 doubles and 2 HRs.
- Not sure if it was the desert warmth, ASU pitching, or just lots of weight lifting, but power hitting led the way this past weekend. Stanford had 26 extra base hits versus only 10 singles, in fact they had as many HRs as singles (10 each).
- Curious that Tommy Troy gets a national player of the week nod (.462 AVG, 3 doubles, 3 HRs, 1.385 SLG) whereas Alberto Rios gets Pac 12 player of the week (0.500 AVG, 2 doubles, 3 HRs, 1.286 SLG). Great we had both.

I share concerns about Mathews' workload. He is a gamer and has thrown so many meaningful pitches in his time on the Farm I hope he can maintain his level of performance. He has thrown as least 111 pitches every start since the end of February. It almost certainly won't happen but I would not mind a few shorter outing to round out the regular season and a week off during the PAC-12 Tourney (depending on where the team stands in terms of national seeding). It was painful to watch Williams go out the way he did in the postseason last season after he shouldered a similar load on Friday's last year.
Either way, as a fan, it has been such a pleasure to get an extra year watching Mathews. I thought for sure he would be taken much higher in last year's draft. It sure seems like he has improved his stock this year while avoiding some long bus rides in the minors!

Wow. Santa Clara 4 Stanford 2 in the bottom of the first and Stanford is on their third pitcher. The curse of Tuesday night may be striking again.
Update: at last, an out.

As the Santa Clara game shows, there's not enough pitching depth in this team to go deep at all. 0 outs in the first with a hbp bases loaded is pretty unacceptable.

But… But… But… Four home runs in three innings.
Santa Clara announcer just said, “Here comes Rusty Filter.“ For just a minute I had a flashback.

Wait till the team meets 2 aces in a row in regionals. Would love them to replicate coastal carolina's run however

I dunno, Mathews, Dixon, Dowd, Pancer, and Bruno sound pretty good to me. Agree that the freshmen pitchers haven’t developed as fast as I’d like.
OTOH, I remember what the two Mississippi State aces did to us a few years ago.

up 8 runs. 2 hit batters and a 4 pitch walk. bases loaded due to an inability to throw strikes.
yikes
Felt like team got lucky there with a very questionable strike 3 looking call on bases loaded, but I'll take it
