Sad way to end on the delayed throw. But then we didn’t score

I’m a long time season ticket holder plus went at the beginning when Stanford softball started play at the rec field across from Stanford mall.

What a great season. Hard to be upset
Now please stay ms Canady

A heartbreaking ending to such a good year. The seventh inning will be a learning experience for this young defense. But being totally honest, Stanford was outhit today by Texas. At some point, when you put runners on, the proverbial dam breaks.

This team hopefully can take real pride in their run this season and tournament. Thank you for allowing us fans to be along for the ride.

Never chase a baserunner toward the base they are trying to reach. Throw the ball to your teammate right away and let them chase them down. Stanford chased the baserunner toward home then threw the ball late. That mistake compounded a fielding error which was enough to end Stanford's season.

Still, congratulations to Coach Allister, the team and the staff on a great season! Lots of highlights.

Agree Spiny. I thought that was something we all learned in Little League. Chase the runner back and the worst case is you get the out with 2 runners on the same base.

Really disappointing to lose like that. But we might never have scored against their pitcher anyway.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - Vandelay - 06-03-2024

Botched run down.  That was a brutal way to lose. Multiple Stanford players made mistakes on that play.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - StanfordMatt - 06-03-2024

The botched run down will capture the headlines but you’re not going to beat anyone with 0 runs and only 2 hits over two entire games against a team.

Yep. Too bad, but what a season. Our household really got into it with alot of fun. Let's hope nobody comes after Canady with a Montgomery, Brink or Iriafen proposal. It could be the biggest NIL in softball history, by far. Not much $$ to be made in sb after college.

And two errors -- and that's just in the official line.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - Card10Fan - 06-03-2024

What even led to that was a fielding error on Taryn Kern, so the winning run should not have even been on base and then as many mentioned, the tag down was a major mistake all around. We needed more hitting again. Canady has to be thinking, I'm doing everything and then some to keep this game and potent Texas offense at bay, please someone on offense help me out here!

Overall, a great season and nothing to be too disappointed about. Stanford softball is on the map and we are as competitive as any program in the country. I hope we can keep our returning core as the future looks bright if everyone returns.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - TonyLima - 06-03-2024

Upside: the team ended 50-17.  Any season where a team does that is a pretty darn good season.  Kudos to the team, coaches, and fans.

A possible piece of good news from the postgame press conference: NiJaree said multiple times "I will pick us [Stanford] every single time [to win in these big games]", and that Stanford could beat anyone [in the World Series]. Granted, you wouldn't expect her to say differently, but the fact that she repeated it and seemed like she meant it means I think she truly believes that this young team can win a championship (people forget the entire infield other than Aly Kaneshiro, and the entire outfield other than Kaitlyn Lim, is freshmen and sophomores).

I will also say with transferring the opportunity to win isn't always greener or guaranteed somewhere else: I am still very grateful for all Alana Vawter provided our program (I think she is still a Stanford Athletics HoF), but after pre-season expectations of big things, South Carolina went out in the regional finals, did not do well in the SEC, and actually had much less hitting and run support this year than Stanford provided (particularly toward the end of this postseason run, tonight's result notwithstanding). Vawter also had a weird year in terms of her innings pitched. She got her innings, but it almost felt like she was splitting the ace role with a younger player.

As another example, Oklahoma was pushed to an if necessary game. A team that has dominated college softball in the post COVID era could be eliminated tomorrow if they struggle again against Florida.

I think it depends on what NiJaree wishes to prioritize. If she wants to increase her chances of winning a national championship a bit more, perhaps there is maybe a school or two in the SEC that would have slightly better odds year in and year out (though honestly, given how young and good this core is, and how ahead of schedule they are, I am not sure).

This team can absolutely win a national championship with NiJaree leading it, that I am certain of. I also think we have the best coaching staff in the country (and the best pitching coach in Coach Nyberg).

The greatest season in program history IMO. Previously in our WCWS runs, we had to rely on elite pitching, defense, and scrappiness honestly.

This team, the games against Teghan Kavan notwithstanding, hit

Also, first ever WCWS win against UCLA (had lost to them in Oklahoma City three times previously).

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - PVTree - 06-03-2024

My wish list for the off-season is two 300+ hitters to replace the outgoing seniors and a good second starter that can give us a chance to win on Canady's rest days.

It wasn't Vawter's choice to transfer. She would have gladly stayed if she had gotten into grad school.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - Vandelay - 06-04-2024

ESPN has the video clip of the rundown play on their site.  I've watched it about 20 times.  It was, unfortunately, a textbook case of what not to do in execution of a rundown.  Two major mistakes were made.  The shortstop chased the runner with the ball in her glove.  Best practice is to chase the runner with ball in throwing hand, arm raised and ready to throw immediately when the runner commits.  It appeared that the shortstop thought that she could catch the Texas runner and, by the time she decided otherwise, it was too late.  The second major mistake on this play was that there appeared to be a moment of confusion at home plate over whether the catcher or 1B should be covering the plate.  The catcher opted out and let the 1B cover home plate when, in my opinion, there was no reason to do that.  You always want your catcher covering home plate since catchers know how to block the plate with their feet and bodies whereas position players generally don't know how to do that.  The 1B was too far back and did not block the plate at all, allowing the Texas runner to beat the tag by mere inches.  Also, in a rundown, you really don't want to put yourself in a position where the tag is being made at home plate. You want to pinch in the runner with the goal of making the tag further away from home plate. I imagine that Coach Allister will be having the team practice that play a lot before next season.  It's a bang-bang play and there is no time to think.  Everyone has to know what their role is and what to do.

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - BobK - 06-04-2024

Agree exept the 1B Gall was a catcher all thru HS and Travel and may be the catcher next season.

Sadly I have seen them practice this of course preson. :)

You can't block the plate without the ball otherwise they will call obstruction. That said, very poorly run rundown.

Amen!!!
You see the averages of the hitters on teams like Oklahoma, Texas and UCLA and you look at ours? You have to ask yourself why are we so much worse?  At this time of year, our motto becomes "In Canady we Trust". We just have to find someway to improve our hitting.

Note that in this case, though, the throw to the plate did beat the runner but the tag did not.  Would that preclude any call of obstruction?  I'm not suggesting that the catcher would have been way out in front of the plate blocking the runner's path.  But even having a catcher near the front of the plate may have been enough of a deterrent to alter the runner's path.

That's even worse if she was/is a catcher.  No excuse for poor positioning and late tag.  But ultimately it's on the chase and late throw IMO.

You and I have both seen better execution at Faber Field, LOL.

Oh well, wait til next year I guess.....

RE: Stanford Softball 2024 - Jamesy - 06-04-2024

Watching the play again, https://x.com/TexasSoftball/status/1797792576738906500, I think Gall takes the position she did so she does not risk getting called for obstruction. That said, better to get the out and make the umps overturn it on replay. I hate the rule though. How is the catcher/player covering the plate supposed to position themselves?!?! There were cases where the throw beat the runner by a mile but was still called safe due to obstruction.

Again, it was a shame. Kanashiro should have run base runner back another step. Looked like runner on second had broken for third. 50%chance both runners are tagged out. Then, Mahler, our first or second fastest player receives the ball and figures she can tag out Texas runner. Unfortunately, the runner is Texas' fastest player and pulled away from Mahler in two steps, so Mahler tosses to Gall, who I'm sure had practiced all year to be the receiver in the run down play. Toss a little high, tag a 1/4 second late. Great game, though.
