I think my favorite part of that column is this: Stanford only has seven seasons of 10+ win seasons in its history. Cal also has seven 10+ win seasons, and so too does UCLA.
ACC teams with 10+win seasons:
Florida State 25
Clemson 18
Miami 15
Virginia Tech 14
Georgia Tech 9
Syracuse 7
North Carolina 7
Pitt 7
Louisville 6
Boston College 3
Wake Forest 2
Duke 1
NC State 1
Virginia 1
So only 5 schools in the ACC have more than seven 10 win seasons in their history.
Stanford would be tied with UNC for 7th best ACC all-time win percentage. No, Stanford is not USC, but it's historically better than virtually any other team the ACC can add, and it will be in the upper half of the ACC if it joins.
Clemson site reporting Cal, Stanford, and SMU all likely to join ACC. The vote is just going to be a formality. The deal is as good as done. There is just way too much money at stake for the ACC to not expand with these schools given the financial concessions they are making to get in.
The only real question is how many sports will be joining ACC
Sources: ACC expansion talks still alive as leaders consider new financial proposal (yahoo.com)
From Ross Dellenger's article yesterday:
"All three new members would join in all sports..." A move to the ACC that doesn't bring along our Olympic sports makes literally zero sense for either the conference or our AD.
Things stopped making sense a long time ago. Including pacific teams joining the atlantic coast conference

All sports? Men's volleyball? Could be tough, since none of the ACC schools have varsity men's volleyball teams.
Also... Stanford's basketball and baseball teams are going to love the new travel schedule...

The Pac-12 doesn't/didn't have men's volleyball either. That sport was and will be in the MPSF. I actually suspect most of the sports teams that are currently in the MPSF will stay in the MPSF. True for Cal, USC and UCLA too.
Oddly, I think men's basketball players will love going to the ACC venues. I think most recruits would rather go to UNC, Duke and Virginia in the winter than Pullman, Corvallis or Eugene. And the TV exposure for their personal NIL ambitions would likely benefit too.
Women's basketball needs real competitors to remain viable. For Stanford women's basketball the ACC is much better than any conference currently centered in the western or mountain time zones.
For baseball UNC, Duke and Virginia would seem to be much better than Ann Arbor, Bloomington and West Lafayette and all of those field turf venues. Baseball already travels in their lengthy preseason to all kinds of places in the USA, I don't see why a half dozen weekend trips to the ACC is that different. Once there they stay for 3 days, so it is not that bad.
Field Hockey and lacrosse have experienced tough travel to lower tier D1 schools on the East coast for years, so they will definitely be better off with the ACC.
I think when most of us think about travel we think about business travel. There you jet to the East coast and immediate attend meetings or conferences that start at 8AM EST the next morning. That's not always ideal. That's not how this sports travel would work. They likely could maintain their internal clock as their event would start no earlier than 1PM and the ACC network would likely hope the Cali schools play as late as possible even when in The South to get whatever viewership is possible from the western time zone.
I could imagine UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington could have a recruiting edge for those worried about travel if they were in a Pac-8. Now though they challenging winter travel, for athletics, to the BigTen, so it should be fine.
The alternative to the ACC is playing as an independent in a lot of sports, and would therefore mean lots of different venues every season. Having a group of known and predictable opponents will be easier for logistics and athletes than trying to cobble a schedule to different lower or mid-major D1 schools each season. And FWIW - most of those lower D1 schools are also in the central and eastern time zones often with even less desirable airport options.
ACC is not the dream, but it is the best lemonade our AD would be able to make with the basket of lemons USC gave us.

For some reason, I have an image in my head that our AD has been relegated to the kids table during the negotiations. Condi, Jerry, Oliver, and even W are championing our cause while Muir is playing Jenga with the ADs from Louisville, Syracuse, Wake and UVA. . . .

Article from the Dallas Morning News focused on SMU but mentions Stanford & Cal:
SMU to ACC not a done deal, but conference realignment heating up again
The Mustangs would reportedly forgo TV revenue distribution from the conference for up to seven years, reports have said. SMU, Stanford and Cal, potential Atlantic Coast Conference expansion candidates, have agreed to revenue distribution models that could make them more appealing to ACC schools, according to multiple reports Wednesday. SMU would be willing to forgo its television revenue distribution from the conference for seven years, Yahoo Sports has reported, while Stanford and Cal would reduce theirs for multiple years, starting at about 30%.
How new revenue generated by adding members to the conference would be distributed has been a sticking point for several ACC schools, among them Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina.
Two weeks ago, conference officials and university leaders met twice in three days to consider adding Stanford, Cal and SMU, but never voted, knowing they wouldn’t have the necessary 12 of 15 votes to approve expansion.
Commissioner Jim Phillips has continued to work on a revenue distribution model, a person with direct knowledge of the ACC’s potential move told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The plan would direct a large portion of the money ESPN would pay the conference to cover three new members to a pool that pays out performance-based bonuses.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the conference was not making its internal discussions public.
Talks with ACC officials and school leaders will continue over the next several days, according to Yahoo, with a final decision expected next week.
Story continues...

In the rowing world, SMU, Stanford, and kal to the ACC would upend a lot of apple carts. The current ACC rowing scene is led by Virginia, a resurgent Syracuse, and Duke. Stanford won the championship last year, and kal is historically strong though currently in a rebuilding phase. SMU wins their tiny conference every year for an automatic championship bid, but they are actually fast, and all three programs entering the ACC would probably push Duke out of the NCAAs, and maybe Syracuse too.

The ACC doesn't sponsor beach volleyball, either. FSU plays in the CCSA.
The CCSA may want to add teams, since they currently only have 4 that play beach.
Or maybe the MPSF can add BVB.

Mrs. Mick met a few Stanford rowing recruits in Palo Alto the other day. She said they looked as if they stepped off of a SoCal beach. Entire family tall and athletic. Sounded excited about the prospects of rowing for Stanford. Also looking at Harvard and Princeton.

The rowing scene on the Charles is pretty tough to beat. Constant presence of teams and individuals sculling up and down the river, boathouses galore. . .

I was watching an interview with Pete Thamel on the ACC Network a few minutes ago. He said the four no-vote schools are in continuing communication. Thamel doubts there will be a flip by only one school. He believes the final vote will either be the four no-votes maintaining their position or all 15 members vote yes.

In other words, NC State would like to flip but they are too gutless to do so without the approval of Big Brother.

The Big 12 rumor popped up yesterday from Mike Silver (cal alum and partisan, always thought of him more as a bad pundit than a journalist)

Today there has been some cold water poured on that from several sources

Still seems ACC is our best and only option of a power conference invite though I keep hoping there are backchannel B1G talks.

The Contingency Conference. Let's do it! Find ten teams and it can be 10CC. I'm definitely not in love with the new college football landscape. Or the old one. Navy was drubbed by the Irish yesterday. Drifting off into what's the point land.

To the contrary, Navy/ND is what is right about college football. Navy and ND have played each other annually since 1927 (with the exception of the COVID year). It is longest intersectional rivalry currently intact in college football (again, taking the 2020 season out of the equation).
They have now played 95 times (with ND winning 81).

dabigv13, you are good at detecting unsupported rumors that turn out to be fabrication. But there are a variety of sources saying big 12 may enter talks with Stanford/Cal but not before the ACC deal is resolved.

so the Big 12 doesn't want to create a bidding war and is waiting to see if they can get an even better deal from desperate teams....
RE: Stanford to the ACC? -

I don't think its going to happen. Florida State, Clemson, and North Carolina want the ACC to fail. They aren't going to change their minds. NC State will do whatever North Carolina tells them to do as they (naively) believe that they are tied at the hip. So, screw them. I hope the ACC survives for many, many years and none of those schools are able to get out of the current Grant of Rights agreement.

The Harvard women's team (which traditionally still rows under the Radcliffe moniker) had been underachieving for over a decade before finally having their head coach replaced this offseason. I suspect a good selling point for Radcliffe is that a bunch of stockpiled, underutilized talent would be an instant medal contender. Princeton had a very good run this year, the best in recent memory, but they still got beat by Stanford (national champion!) and Washington.
Stanford has a seemingly very athlete-centric squad culture and the benefit of rowable water nearly every day of the year. Boston and Princeton get frozen off their water every winter. What's not to like more about Stanford? :)
