Interesting. Kent was drafted as a shortstop, which is what he played at Cal. He played third and SS in low A's, moving to 2B the next year.

Craig Biggio

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - Mick - 07-23-2024

Interesting...at the 2016 Brazil Olympics, for the first time, there was a team competing under the "Refugee" banner...a team of athletes without a country, as it were. At the 2016 Olympics, there were 56 refugee athletes from 13 countries. In Tokyo in 2020, there were 29 athletes competing in 12 sports.

Again, there will be a refugee team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, or the Équipe olympique des réfugiés.

Here's the trivia questions. How many countries will these athletes represent, and from which countries do they originate?

I didn’t have a clue re: the answer so I looked it up.  I would be quite surprised if anyone answers the question correctly.

No on Kent or Biggio.

Was drafted second in 2003 by the Brewers.

Paul monitor

Wow. Other than 7 days in this I would never ever have guessed

Molitor 50 years before and 27 rounds after this guy (drafted in the 28th round of the 74 draft), but at least you got the team right ;)

Despite being drafted second overall, he had a middling career, with a lifetime average of .246, 161 home runs, and 474 RBIs playing for 14 seasons, mostly with the Brewers.  He was the starting second baseman in the 2011 all-star game.

It’s a tough one.

I looked it up too. I never heard of the guy.

Not Russia or Ukraine. Think Middle East, Africa, Carribean. 36 athletes from 11 countries. Bonus if you can guess which country is responsible for the most refugees on this team, with 14 of the 36 from this country. Two other countries have five each. All other countries are one or two.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - BobK - 07-25-2024

Ok there will be Russian athletes not representing Russia and they are neutral athletes.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - Mick - 07-25-2024

Here's the breakout:

Iran, 14 athletes

Syria and Afghanistan, 5 athletes each

Cuba, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan; two athletes each

Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and Venezuela; one athlete each

The Giants Fitzgerald recently hit HRs in 5 straight games tying the team record
The MLB record is 8 by 3 players. Who are they. Yes I remember the first to hit in 8 straight games

I think I can remember two of them:

Dale Long
Don Mattingly

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - BobK - 07-25-2024

Perfect Terry. One more
Long caught a couple of games which was noteworthy as he was left handed

Wow, can’t believe I stumped this group.  The highest drafted second baseman before this year was Rickie Weeks, drafted second overall by Milwaukee in 2003: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/weeksri01.shtml

In honor of Dylan Cease’s no-hitter for the Padres yesterday, who is the only other Padre pitcher to have thrown a no-hitter?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2024 - BobK - 07-26-2024

Jake Peavy no hitter

HR in 8 straight games Ken Griffey Jr

Not Peavy, much more recently; the pitcher is still on the Padres roster.
