An absolutely fantastic effort by Megha.  In recent times she has always seemed to be ranked behind some newcomer. Very happy for her.

I think she will move from 11th to 8th, behind Mailixi and Galitsky.

As far as I can tell, none of last year's top 6 are transferring. We'll have to wait to see if they all enroll at Stanford for fall quarter and if any of them go for LPGA qualifying which begins at the end of September.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Hulk01 - 08-16-2025

Following up on our frequent criticisms of the NCAA's use of five-player, 18 hole match play to determine the national championship:

The PGA Tour uses 72 hole stroke play to determine a tournament's champion, and the NCAA uses 12 rounds (best four scores of five players for each round times three rounds per player) to determine its final final eight teams.

Yet the team that wins three 18 hole matches of the five total matches wins the NCAA championship.

Which brings us to today's men's US Amateur semifinals.  The eight men ranked as following in the world:

12, 16, 29, 91, 121, 198, 362, and 4292.

So: is best of five, 18-hole match play a fair way to identify the best team in the country?

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - KartyFan - 08-16-2025

No, but are championships really trying to identify the best team in the country? If that were the case there should probably be no playoffs at all, just a regular season tally to have the largest sample size possible. Playoffs exist for excitement.

That said, I see your point and think I agree. The sample size is too small and adds too much randomness. Maybe cut it to four teams and make the matches 36 holes each?

The change in format to match play wasn't done to be fair, it was done for ratings and excitement. At least with the current NCAA team format, you have to be in the top 8 after 4 rounds of golf to qualify so you're not likely to get brobdingnagian underdogs like you do in individual matchplay.

Agreed and it really helped getting the coverage and interest. You can shoot the low round and lose the match, different game. Even starting with the coaches having to decide who plays in what order versus what the other team might do and even on the course do you try and make a tough shot that might win the hole or lay up and play to probably tie. Match play is far more interesting, particularly when you really care about the men and ladies wearing Cardinal and White.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Hulk01 - 08-17-2025

Yes, the NCAA format is far more telegenic. A pure stroke play event would make dull tv, save the rare year where the top two teams are neck and neck.)

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Jamesy - 08-17-2025

I haven't looked back but would we have more or fewer ncaa titles with the old format? I think a couple of the women's titles and definitely the men's title came as non number 1 seeds but how many times were we the one seed and not win?

Good point,
In this system you are in it until you aren't. If you win the last match you play another, stroke count plays no role

Wow, just wow! Do we know if Kiara Romero considered Stanford when she was from San Jose, CA?

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - BostonCard - 08-30-2025

Stanford has four out of the ten preseason all Americans.  No other school has more than one.

Congrats Meja Örtengren, Andrea Revuelta, Megha Ganne, and Paula Martín Sampedro.

This blurb for Kelly Xu caught my eye:

Xu has been one of the most consistent Cardinal during her career, ranking fourth in program history in scoring average (71.89). She owns ten top-10 finishes in her career, including four last season, and is tied for the NCAA Championship record with seven match play wins. She is a two-time Second Team All-America selection through WGCA.

It's absolutely insane what she's done in her career - and while she might not be as flashy as some others - the fact that she's fourth in program history in scoring average given some of the legends who have come through is remarkable.

Here is the full article of Golf Channel's Brentley Romine's projections of All-Americans, top freshmen, top 30 teams (spoiler - Stanford is #1), and best tournaments.  Stanford will host the Stanford Invitational on Oct. 17-19 and an NCAA Regional on May 11-13.

And the even more insane thing is that the golfer who is #4 all-time in scoring average is the #5 golfer on this team!
