Today's AVCA coaches' poll:  Stanford stays at #15.

Stanford down to #28 in RPI.  After playing Oregon State (RPI #226, 3-19) next week I expect the RPI to be around #38 or #39.   Beyond #40 is getting into tournament bubble range.  There are about 45 or so at-large qualifiers.  Stanford could dip below #45 after playing Cal (RPI #244).  IMO it's not a sure thing Stanford makes the tournament.  They probably will based on reputation and if Miner/Kipp are not out for an extended period of time.

At this point, with the mess they are in right now, I would be happy for them to just be able to sneak into the NCAA Tournament.  If they are at full strength during the last 2 weeks of PAC 12 play and entering the NCAAs, those Regional 1 or 2 seeds better watch out if Stanford is in their 1st and 2nd Round mini-bracket....

Yes, my rooting goal right now is for us to make some seeded team regret that we were an unseeded team in their bracket.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 11-01-2021

I don't think Stanford's RPI will sink down below 40. The cut-off for the tournament is usually near 50.
(We've already played OSU and Cal once, but I guess playing them again will double their weighting.)

The latest "RPI futures" prediction is #29, with a final record of 17-11.  That would mean going 5-3 in our last 8 matches.
Depending on how long Miner and Kipp are out, that may be optimistic.

I can see losing to Oregon, UW and WSU with the current line up, and sneaking by OSU.  If they get back to full strength for the road matches, they could beat Colorado, USC and Cal, but Utah on the road will be a challenge.

Even at full strength, we could split with UW & WSU.

Barring further disasters (knock wood), I'm pretty sure Stanford will make the tournament.

One more thought:
Would burning Fidelak's red shirt year be worth it?  Would she be enough of an upgrade over one of the available hitters?
I don't know.  And so far, it looks like Hambly is leaving her on the bench.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 11-01-2021

I thought it was Fidelak's decision to redshirt so she could transfer and have a year eligibility to play somewhere else while getting her masters. Maybe if Hambly promised her playing time she'd go along. But it probably would only last until Kipp comes back. The question is how long will Kipp be out.

One more thought: As I understand it WVB has one unfilled 2022 scholarship. With these last two seasons of a minimal healthy roster it's unfortunate Hambly was not able to find an elite player to give out that scholarship. I'm sure he will give it to a deserving player already on the roster for 2022 only if nothing materializes.

...
Yes, I think it is Fidelak's choice.  But she would still have a covid year as a graduate transfer.  The redshirt gives her two years, if I understand correctly.
But if Hambly came to her and said, "We could really use your help right now"?
And I don't recall exactly how he phrased it, but I thought it was, "She is redshirting if not needed."

To give fans a preview of its current thinking the NCAA selection committee announced its top ten seeds.  Stanford is not one of them.

Against Arizona State Oglivie had 15 kills and 17 digs.  Should she get the start at OH with Francis at OPP for tomorrow's match against Oregon?

If Kipp isn't back yet? Sure!

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 11-04-2021

Just saw that Denise Corlett will be honored at Sunday's match vs. WSU.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - mbdude - 11-04-2021

Apparently no Kipp or Louegay tonight per Volleytalk. Miner back

Stanford drops 1st set 27 -25 after leading 25 24

With this straight set loss to Oregon, Stanford drops to 7-6 in-conference, 12-9 overall. Although the scores were close in every set, Oregon basically outplayed Stanford in every statistical dept (41 vs 39 kills ; .240 vs .196 hitting % ; 11 vs 5 blocks ; 50 vs 41 digs)

Unfortunately, with all these sudden injuries to key starters, I sense a disintegration of the team's morale.  Very frustrating indeed.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - BobK - 11-05-2021

No one likes losing. Sure that hurts morale.
Sad season again

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - Softball Fan - 11-05-2021

Baird is not good at passing and seems to be regressing.  Hambly needs to rearrange the serve receive rotation so Baird is not passing.  As long as Baird receives serve Stanford will not make a final four.   Hambly should try something this season.  He could try Baird at OPP.  He could go to a two-person serve receive.  Anything will be better than Baird handling the first touch on the serve.  He could at least take Baird out of the three rotations in the back row.

Baird also should not be serving.  She misses serves at the wrong time.  There are critical times when a player should recognize the serve must go in the court.  Baird doesn't seem to be cognizant of that.

I've always supported Hambly.  I'm starting to have doubts.  Much of the problem is the players, highly ranked at the prep level, are turning out to be extremely deficient in some areas and have no apparent ability to reduce their unforced errors.  Also part of the problem is Hambly doesn't seem to be helping these players get better.  I'm talking about individual skills.  I understand there are players out of the lineup.

12 service errors in three sets

Oglivie had a better hitting percentage and more block assists than Baird, Francis, and Campbell.

Oglivie had zero service errors (one service ace).  Campbell 4 service errors, Baird 3 service errors, Francis 2 service errors.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - mbdude - 11-05-2021

stanford had set point in 1st set and was up 23-21 in 3rd -  gave up 4pt run to oregon

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 11-05-2021

Oglivie seems to be determined to make the most of this opportunity.
Hope she can rally the team.

RE: Stanford Women’s Volleyball - johnbar - 11-05-2021

Stanford at Colorado will depend on who is healthy. (Of course, they all will, to some extent.) If it were at home, Stanford's Thursday night effort might have been good enough to beat the Lady Buffaloes. But the Boulder altitude always makes things tougher.

But I essentially agree with you.  Stanford should make the tournament, but won't get to play at home.

Crossing fingers.

Elia Rubin led her team to a Southern Section championship over the weekend. This article is mostly about her.

Stanford RPI at #29:

NCAA volleyball bracket predictions (just their prediction; actual bracket will be different).   Stanford plays Miami in first round of Louisville regional.  I would actually expect Stanford to win that match.
