I also have warm feelings about the 2013 game at Michie Stadium.  For some reason the Corps of Cadets adopted John Flacco and started chanting "Put in Flacco, put in Flacco".  And they cheered wildly when Flacco entered the game.  After he left the game, Flacco led the Corps in the Rocket cheer, further endearing himself to them.

How good is he? His offer list is paltry.

Clear example of a late bloomer. Only starting season was last year. He had 108 tackles, 15 TFL, 4 sacks, 11 hurries, and 4 forced fumbles against the highest level of Georgia HS competition. He and Chief Borders were teammates, and his stats absolutely blow Borders out of the water.

Not sure where you're getting "paltry" from: Stanford, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas St, Kentucky, Louisville, Nebraska, Pitt, and South Carolina all offered after seeing his junior (only year of) tape. He wasn't on anyone's radar until after the season.

Dubre is pretty well regarded in the state.  he was named to pre-season 1st team 7A all-state list and named in the state's top 100 recruits in the state (on lists compiled by the AJC).  another Stanford LB recruit, Chief Borders (more highly regarded as a 4-star), made neither the preseason 1st team 6A all-state list nor the state's top 100 recruit list.

Sam... you seen closest to the real dope about recruiting. What is your overall take since it seems that this year is heading down the disaster road.

Sam is indeed very plugged in, but I don't think it takes much more than a casual observer to see that your assessment is correct.  2021 seems headed towards being the worst of Shaw's recruiting classes, and an unbalanced one at that.  Things will likely improve a little bit as recruiting is not over, but I expect it will still be somewhere between bad and awful.

The only good news is that we seem to have recruited numbers at the safety position.

RE: Class of 2021 - OutsiderFan - 09-09-2020

I get the pool restrictions, but if there is any overarching theme I have seen about Stanford recruiting under Shaw it is myopia. It seems there is always too many at one position and not enough at others. They wait until it is a crisis before acting to re-double efforts at bolstering position groups. We've seen this at OL, DL, ILB, Safety, and TE in recent years.

On top of this, Shaw's arrogance about Stanford being special led him to make fewer offers because he never imagined guys who he thought fit the profile wouldn't come when offered. Turns out everyone wants to win and any perceived slippage in a program's performance or ability to put guys in the NFL, can devalue its scholarship offer, including Stanford Football's.

RE: Class of 2021 - SamuelMcF - 09-09-2020

From here on out I believe every single commit will be a big boy - OL, DL, LB. Strange that basically all the skill positions filled first.

Also keep in mind we're not sure how roster size will be impacted by Covid, now that players can maintain their eligibility. Will the limit still be 85?

This mostly hits the nail on the head, IMO. That said, I don't think making fewer offers is "arrogance about Stanford being special" so much as Shaw wants all his offers to be committable (for better or for worse), meaning we don't offer someone else until it's confirmed that the initial targets are off the board. This happens way too late for many of the next tier of recruits who has already built up relationships with many other coaching staffs for months on end.

Further, multiple recruits got admitted and signed elsewhere because they barely talked to our head man - we've already beaten our record of one in any other season. THIS part is the "arrogance about Stanford being special." That plus not getting guys to visit. (The in-person visits really make a difference.)

We can look at '22 to see how changes are being made. The number of offers out right now is the highest under Shaw by far. We're hearing about relationships that have been built with position coaches for months or more already. I've heard Shaw is the guy who gets the whole family on Zoom and makes the offer in many instances. Multiple prospects have already taken more than 1 virtual visit. We offered THREE elite QBs, all of whom are straight-A students. Though the offers are still imbalanced, 17 defensive offers is a point we didn't reach until February for the previous class.

Yeah, this class might be the worst under Shaw to date. But you can't move backwards, only forwards with renewed vigor and changes. I guess we'll see what happens.

Do you think Shaw will learn? Or will he remain stubborn?

RE: Class of 2021 - CompSci87 - 09-09-2020

It sounds like he has already learned. But "Shaw is stubborn" is a meme that will never die. Fans are too stubborn to change their minds about it. ;-)

I don't think stubborn is the right adjective to describe Shaw. He has shown a willingness to change.

There is a fine line between being patient, giving things time to work out, and waiting too long to make changes. Shaw has IMO a well-established track record of waiting too long to change what isn't working. I see it manifested most in recruiting and game management, but I'm sure it applies to keeping coaches too long and other areas that aren't publicly visible.

on the Georgia Power 100, I've not seen a link to it yet.  I received material via the Georgia High School Football Daily email service.

it will be interesting to see how Borders does in Carrollton.  iirc there are 6 D-1 recruits on the team's defense.

Sam -- good points but I wanted to highlight the one above in your post.  may as well dispel with this myth too.  the 3 QBs offered in '22 is just another proof point that this "offerable/committable" position is just not supported by data.  Shaw/staff may manage by yield number but all too often we have a lot of early offers that exceed the number of slots we will have open.

I like the more aggressive offer strategy for '22.  it appears that the personal HC and coach engagement has picked up too.  I am hopeful that Shaw will revert back to stance #1 on spring OVs (he supported them initially) and discard subsequent stances #2 and #3 and use many of them (up to 20) on whale offerees.  we can save a set number of OVs for bonding weekend.

Offering some beef: DE/TE for 2021.  I am assuming we are offering for defense.  Brandon Huffman is fairly confident we will land him, but the competition is not exactly brutal.

—————

No, the limit will be 85 plus  the number of guys who return that otherwise would have exhausted their eligibility.  For example, if team X has 10 who would have exhausted their eligibility had there been a normal season and six choose to return, the scholarship limit for 2021 is 91 (85+6).

NOTE:  It does not matter whether there is a fall, spring or no season, 2020 does NOT count against as a season for the purposes of determining eligibility.  This means that some hard decisions will be required prior to the 2022 season when the scholarship limit returns to 85.
