Ted Williams holds the career OBP record at .482, Ruth is second at .474. Billy Hamilton is #4 and Lou Gehrig is #5.

And then, the Giants:

#3 is John McGraw, career .466 OBP and better known as the Giants' Hall of Fame manager. He played (very little) for the Giants for six seasons. He was only 5'7" and the king of walks. In 1898, he had 112 walks and just 13 strikeouts.

#6 overall is Barry Bonds at .444 OBP.

#7 overall is Bill Joyce at .435 OBP. Played for five teams in nine years, the last three with the Giants.

#8 overall is Rogers Hornsby at .434 OBP. Played for the Giants for one year, in 1927, and was such a cantankerous creep that they traded him despite leading the league in 1/2 dozen categories including runs, walks, OPS and OBP.

And for the others...

Ott is #27 overall at .414
O'Doul is #30 overall at .413

And not in the Top 100:
Mays was .394, just out of the Top 100. He led the league in OBP twice, 1965 and 1971 (the only year he led the league in walks with 112. He never had more than 82 walks in a given year).
McCovey was .374, though he led the league in OBP in 1969 with .453.
Madlock didn't walk much, he was .365

Others who played for the Giants at one time or another in the top 100 include some very interesting characters like Johnny Mize, Eddie Stanky (see the movie 47) and Castlemont high product, Joe Morgan.

Also on the list was immensely popular Ross Youngs, #62, who spent his entire 10 year career with NY Giants and died of Bright's disease at age 30. The aforementioned McGraw said Youngs was the best outfielder he ever saw, which is apt because Youngs taught Mel Ott how to play RF. Youngs also considered the best golfer in MLB. The Giants honored Youngs with a plaque on the outfield wall at the Polo Grounds, paid for entirely by fan donations.

And last but not least, #100 on the list is Augie Galan who was born in Berkeley and played mainly for the Cubs and Dodgers, but half of his last year was with the Giants.

Yes, it is unrealistically optimistic. Even great pitchers don't win all the time. There are two things that are trending in the right direction for this however. First, most of the wins in the combined 17 have come recently. Both were even less successful earlier in the year. Second, many of the 18 no-decisions actually ended up as wins for the Giants. If these two guys are not lights-out, with the three AAA pitchers we have been using, the Giants have no chance. Every win we get above the required .364 or so from the AAA guys is margin for error with the other two guys. Right now, there is no such margin.

If you factor in the Giants having the best record in MLB in 1-run games, no decisions for starting pitchers is actually pretty good. Then again, the bullpen hasn't been so great lately...

While Bum and Shark have that combined record of 17-16, in July/August the Giants are 14-3 in games those two have started (which matches what my eyeballs have been seeing). I thought team would revert to mean after the trade deadline, but they continue to hang in there which is kind of crazy if you think about starters 3-5. If they find some magic from Cueto, Rodriguez, maybe Webb they could stay in it til the end. And if they are in it at the end anything can happen. Fun season.

Logan Webb is 22, has given up one run in five innings. Effectively wild, I'd say. Five hits, one walk, seven strikeouts. Pillar is 3 for 3 already, Belt 2 for 3 with the slam.

Slater PH for Webb, has an infield single and another single. BA near .300, OBP now over .400. great sliding catch in the 8th inning.

Webb has been sporting about a 2 ERA all year, so he’s showing consistency.

What a panacea Webb could be if he can keep it up.

Yes and yes.

If Webb can even be a .500 pitcher the rest of the year, it would help immensely. Naturally, better is better. The Giants are still a long shot, but the way they have been playing makes one think anything is possible. No mater what happens tomorrow, they have for sure wounded the Dbacks. That is one team they have to compete with. They get a shot at the Cubs soon. They need to win that series as well. They have to play .600 ball the rest of the way. That is the task. If they do it, they play on. If they can't, I hope they stay close enough to keep it interesting.

Second place behind the Dodgers on August 17th. Two months ago, I would have never believed it. Webb was fantastic. Consider that he came up through minors this year!! One AAA game and he defeats the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Plus, he is a local boy from right up I-80.

Pillar ended up five for five. Yaz had three hits, and Slater, Gennett, Belt and Vogt had two each. Eighteen total hits.

Giants have won six of seven, close up against the D'Backs tomorrow, have Monday off, then have three against the Cubs, who are sitting in the last wild card spot. Stay tuned!

Amazing that the A's are 19 games over .500, yet are still a half game out of a wild card spot. The Giants are two games over .500 and just 2.5 out of a spot.

Do the A's get any coverage locally anymore. Back when Dick Williams, Billy Martin, and Tony LaRussa managed, the A's were all you heard about.

I noticed that. Last year's NL second-wild card team won 91 games, the year before it was 87, which is the lowest it's been in the NL. But this year, 11 of the 15 NL teams are within 11 games of .500. Lots of parity this year. 85 games might take it.

Giants take three straight and going for a sweep with their ace on the mound against a guy with a 10+ era. Bumgarner promptly coughs up three in the first and the bats go virtually silent. Ugh.

He has 8 HRS in 14 games, 33 for the year. I think he's a lock for the September callups.
