I watched (in person) Stanford get upset by #16 LBSU, 2-3. The 1s team of Hodel & Reilly jumped out to a big lead in their first set, then LBSU narrowed the gap. But Hodel/Reilly held on for that set. Unfortunately, they couldn't put it away in the second, and also lost the third.
Hodel's shoulder had a lot of tape, and it looked like she couldn't swing with full strength.
Note that the music played on site was much lower volume than some past years. You could hardly notice it from the west end. Beautiful weather.
I didn't stay for the later dual vs. #11 Cal Poly, but I did catch some of the later sets on the live streams. Stanford won that 4-1, with only the 5s losing. For this meet, Hodel & Reilly moved down to 2s, and Ekstrom & Kriz moved up to the 1s. Charlie Ekstrom picked up her 50th and 51st career wins.

They play again tomorrow at Noon and 4pm, and I expect them to beat unranked St. Mary's and UCDavis.
Speaking of the live streams, I ran into a problem that i have seen before with some Pac-12 streams. Not sure if it is my browser or their player. But clicking the "Live" button will cause the video to replay from when I first started, while a notice pops up and says "You are live". Going from the small window to full screen will cause the same thing. The only way to fix this (AFAICT) is to close the browser window, reclick the stream link, and immediately go to full screen.

I didn't notice there were other moves in the line-up yesterday. Sharp & Harvey played at the 3s in the first dual (I think they have been there most of the season) moved down to the 4s for the late dual. Freshmen Morris & Wilson moved up from 4s to 3s.
That same line-up swept St. Mary's today.
Then for the UCDavis dual, McKinney swapped with Harvey. Stanford won 4-1. It could have been a sweep, but, "Ekstrom and Kriz did not finish their match due to a Stanford injury." If I am reading it correctly, they had match point when they forfeited. I hope it is nothing serious.

RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball - Softball Fan - 04-05-2022
In today’s AVCA poll, Stanford goes from #8 to #9 being replaced by Hawaii which has ten losses.
John, thanks for your first-person accounts. The heavily bandaged shoulder of Hodel is concerning. Back in my younger days I had a soft tissue shoulder injury from playing VB on the beach. I tried every form of PT available and continued to play. It didn’t work. The challenge on the beach is you are often hitting the ball from crazy, unnatural angles. I finally had to take a year off and rest my shoulder to completely get healed.
I don’t know the extent of Hodel’s injury and PT may have made big strides since my day. Hopefully she can find a way to recover during the season.
Switching to the indoor game, I emailed the Director of Operations to ask if there would be any spring exhibition matches open to the public. I have not received a reply.

Speaking of indoors, someone pointed out that Mary Hambly is now director of operations for beach volleyball.
The Pac-12 North Invitational this weekend has all nine Pac-12 BVB teams at Stanford. It looks like Stanford's matches will be broadcast on Pac-12 BA tonight. (Due to ongoing issues with San Bruno Cable, I'm not able to watch the live stream). Planning to watch in person tomorrow.
Stanford vs. USC right now. Some shifts in the Stanford line-up again. I see Maddi Kriz is out, apparently injured last week.
#1 Ekstrom/Reilly
#2 Hodel/Wilson
#3 Morris/McKinney
#4 Sharp/Harvey
#5 Turner/Doucet
Exh. Dailey/Vetter
Freshman Wilson at #2 is new. And I'm not sure senior McKinney has played up at #3 before.

Lost 5-0 but hey won a set And several sets were close. Looked for you John. See you tomorrow

I see they beat UW 4-1, and Maddi Kriz was back on the 1s (only team that lost).
RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball -
johnbar - 04-10-2022
I watched Stanford beat Arizona 4-1. Ekstrom & Kriz played at the 2s, and won their first set easily. Ekstrom's serve was on, and she got several aces. But it was less effective in the second set, and combined with some hitting errors, they dropped the second and third sets. Kriz's knee was in a some sort of bandage brace.
I did not stay for the late match with Cal, but did catch it on TV. Stanford won 3-2, with wins at the 2s, 4s, and 5s.
They are on the road next weekend (TCU Invitational) and then back on the Farm for their final home matches of the season Apr 23 & 24.

In the second game yesterday Stanford barely lost to # 2 TCU
RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball -

They beat Missouri State 4-1. They had to wake up early for these matches in Houston.
Glad they beat Pepperdine; too bad they could not manage the upset of TCU. I guess that's a good loss, if there is such a thing.
They are done for the weekend.
Next Saturday and Sunday at home. I guess Sunday will be Senior Day.

Stanford beats Cal 3-2. Has won eight of the last nine matches.
RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball -
johnbar - 04-23-2022
I didn't see the sweep of the Huskies, but I did watch the Cardinal beat Cal.
In the first group of matches, the 4s dropped their first set, but then bounced back to win the second and third sets fairly easily. Not sure what made the difference. I was primarily watching the 2s. Cal pushed Ekstrom & Kriz, but Stanford won 24-22 and 21-15. So Stanford was up 2-0. Then the 1s, 3s, and 5s were up. Again in the first set, Cal hung close, but Hodel & Reilly prevailed. They had an easier time in the second set. On the other courts, things didn't go as well, and both the 3s and 5s lost in two sets.
Both Kriz and Hodel are still wearing knee braces. Not sure how much it effects them at this point; they both played well.
Tomorrow's dual with #7 GCU should be an interesting test.
RE: Stanford Beach Volleyball -
johnbar - 04-24-2022
Stanford fell 1-4 to GCU and swept SMC. But it was more interesting than that.
The dual with GCU initially looked like it might be a complete disaster. Stanford's 2s and 4s lost in straight sets, with the 2s (Ekstrom/Kriz) in particular seemed over-matched. Then the 1s, 3s, and 5s all dropped their first sets. But the 1s and 3s turned it around and won their second sets, and for a moment it look like the 5s might, too. But the 5s fell in extra points (21-15, 25-23). The 1s (Hodel/Reilly) won their set, and the 3s led 8-3. But they couldn't finish it, and GCU won that, too.
After the senior day ceremony, I was hoping for quick wins, since the match was starting almost a half hour late. The 2s seemed in control their first set, but the 4s dropped theirs. The fortunes reversed, and SMC easily won the second set at the 2s, and Stanford's 4s won their second. Stanford's Ekstrom & Kriz did get a small lead in the third, but SMC tied it at 13 and had match point four times (IIRC), before Stanford finally got match point at 18-17 and won it 19-17. A few minutes earlier, the Stanford 4s also won their third set. By this point, the 5s were underway, and they (Morris & McKinney) made pretty quick work of SMC, winning 21-15, 21-12. The 1s and 3s won their first sets; the 1s easily (21-10) and the 3s just barely (22-20). At that point I had to leave, but Stanford did complete the sweep (though the 3s went 3 sets).

They end the regular season 23-9. I think they will be the #3 seed in the Pac-12 Championship, and I would expect them to end up in third place, after UCLA and USC. (Cal is the only other serious competition for third, I think. Arizona beat Cal once, but also lost to Oregon.)
I certainly expect them to make the expanded NCAA tournament. I really hope they win their first-round match this year (on May 4th), since the first round is single elimination. After that it reverts to double-elimination.
The regular season is over, and pac-12.com still has no records listed on their 'standings' page.
