Stanford also shows up in UCLA’s interview where Kiki Rice is asked about turning down the opportunity to play for Tara:

Hmmm....good non-answer on her part.  I'll stick with my WAG that the NIL and Tinsel Town factors played a role.

I think she was pretty clear on her motivation — being part of the firsts for a program.  I know nothing is her reasoning for going there, but that truly is a motivation of hers, you can’t really be the first for much at Stanford on or off the court.

Ann Myers disagrees on the first.

Yeah, Stanford seemed like such a perfect fit for her. Interesting when your success as a program works against you rather than for you in the recruiting process.

Success as a program doesn't seem to be a problem for UConn in recruiting

Speaking of UConn California native and top recruit Frosh Ice Brady is now out for the year with a knee injury

At the same time they didn't get Kiki and with her brother playing for Yale  it would have also seemed a good fit, at least with their parents plans to attend the games.
I would say overall Stanford's success has certainly helped its recruiting. This was one isolated incident.

Yeah it's quite unfortunate it played out this way, considering how perfect a fit and timing Kiki's arrival would have been for Stanford. I'm sure Duke and Kara Lawson feel the same way, being another up and coming program that would fit the bill for Kiki's reasoning behind choosing UCLA and oh so close to home.

I am excited for UCLA though to have her and here's to hoping they get to the Final Four in her career, but I don't see it.

It has to be a bit of a reality check for her to see the #1 2023 recruit, from LA, is not even considering the Bruins.

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - 81alum - 10-26-2022

Quote:Q. Kiki, I know that you had a chance to play for Stanford. You were heavily considering them, Tara VanDerveer. Not a lot of people turn that down. Just talk about your decision to choose UCLA, and obviously it says a lot about your coach, Cori Close, and her program, that you would choose them. Talk about your decision to choose UCLA and why that was the right decision for you no?

KIKI RICE: Obviously going through the recruiting process I had the opportunity to go on visits and talk to so many incredible coaches and teams, but I think really what separated UCLA for me was the fact that they really checked so many of my boxes, and I think coming to a school and accomplishing something that hasn't been done before at a school is just so appealing to me.

To be part of a group to be the first to do something, make it to a Final Four, win a National Championship, is really what drew me here.

I agree with the earlier post that said this is a non-answer.  To me it sounds like a mature and thoughtful evasion.  It is a way of saying "no" to Stanford without dissing Stanford or Tara in the slightest.  It also sounds like it is exactly what Close would have said to her when she knew she was up against Stanford, and Kiki is reflecting that line back.

However, I don't believe for a minute that this was her real reason.  I don't know what the real reason was, but it is far more likely to be something related to a particular relationship, an affinity for LA and/or its cultural communities, impressions of play time or a preferred style of play or style of coaching, perhaps a particular academic program that Stanford lacks and UCLA has, hopes for a more attractive NIL deal in a bigger local market, etc.  Pure unadulterated speculation on our part, but  have to believe it is about more than avoiding programs with lofty records of accomplishment.  After all, there are a great many of those out there besides UCLA.

Yes, they normally have a 2nd. or 3rd. team and Cam would most certainly be on one of those.  Also Texas' Rory Harmon.  Don't know why they didn't.

With the season just a few days away, I've been giving thought to how we get back to the Championship game and win.  Here are my keys to the rings, some of which Tara may have already identified, so this is just for fun.

1) Cam and Haley must score more, especially in crunch time.  Cam 15-18 ppg; Haley 18-20.

2) Put 2 players at pass outlets when we take the ball out of bounds after an opponent (who presses us) scores.

3) Step on the accelerator- Not talking about when the reserves come in at the end, but when we get a big lead and sometimes we take our foot off the pedal and let them come back.

4) Throw wrinkles in the Princeton offense, especially when we are really pressured on the perimeter; not just backdoor plays.

5) Cam is able to consistently play with only 1 foul going into the 3rd. quarter.  I mention the 3rd. Q because if she picks up a foul (especially with no fouls), Tara tends to keep her in the game. The fact she is moving to power forward might have its own challenges because she may be guarding shorter and perhaps quick players.  Cam has to play defense with her feet.

6) Whenever possible, screens for Hannah which (I believe) will up her 3pt. shooting to the mid-40s.

7) An emerging guard who handles the ball, allowing Haley more rest, counter the pressure defense by penetrating into the key and (most important) pass or score.

What are your keys for a championship season?

1) We need another volume 3-point shooter in the high 30’s or 40+% range to compliment Jump and spread the floor for Jones, Brink, Iriafen and Belibi to drive the lane.  Most likely players are Demetre and Prechtel

2) Four players looking to score on the floor at all times.  Too many times last year Wilson and Lacie were only looking to pass

3) Jump hits her runner.  Last year she was working on this.  Defenders would fly out at her at the 3 point line, she would shot fake and then try a mid range runner.  She missed almost all of them.  But I have faith in her ability to shoot any shot with more practice.

4) Brink and Betts dominate the paint defensively because our perimeter defense got a lot weaker with both Hulls and Wilson gone.  We still have one of our top 4 perimeter defenders last year in Emma Nnopu though who likely will be guarding the best guard/perimeter player on the other team (think Harmon from Texas).

What are your keys for a championship season?
1. Rebounding must improve over last season.  We were good last season but need to dominate this season.  We should be scoring a lot more points off of O-boards with our height and athleticism inside.  Jump won't have to hit 44% if Iriafan, Brink, Betts, and others put back many of her misses.

2. Perimeter defense.  We must find two players who can shut down or at least control the likes of Zia Cooke, Rory Harmon, and Te-Hina Paopao.

3. Ball handling.  Jones must dramatically improve her turnover tendency from last year, or else a different player needs to emerge as an effective point guard.

4. Brink and fouls.  Cam must show more discipline on defense.

5. Player development.  We need a combination of sophomore improvement and freshman talent to add several players to the rotation.  Whichever 7-8 players carry most of the minutes by the end of the year, probably 3-4 of them will not have seen significant minutes before this year.  We need to see a couple of players excel and become true stars to join our returning starters in the rotation.  Iriafan, Demetre, Lepolo, Emma-Nnopu, Nivar, and Betts are the logical candidates.  Who from among those 6 will have a break-out year?  We need at least two to surprise us with how accomplished they turn out to be.

What are your keys for a championship season?
1) With Betts joining the team and Irafen's impressive development, Brink will likely be playing farther away from the basket than last season (perhaps even at the 3). Fouls will be down and minutes and 3 point shot attempts will be up. So it is likely that her total points scored will go up. Jones will score as needed. We've got a lot of players to score. Most important is that Jones continue to facilitate scoring (she had 3.7 assists per game last season compared to Williams' 3.1 per game her senior year) and maintain her ability to score when needed, especially in crunch time.
2) I trust Tara to draw up whatever plays are best.
3) We've got a deep team.  I'm not worried about holding leads.
4) Again, I trust Tara
5) Not worried about Brink's quickness, especially when she's got a 6'7" center to back her up
6) I'm sure Tara's on it
7) Jones is our starting point guard. Nivar will be a more than adequate backup (especially when teams go small).  It would be great if Jones' ballhandling could improve, but that is not necessary for this team to win this championship. She had only 2 turnovers each in the losses to UConn and South Carolina last season (that's not why we lost those games).  And last season Jones had an assist to turnover ratio of 1.27 (compared to the Stanford team's 1.13 ratio and South Carolina's ratio of 0.96). Tara encourages aggressive passing, which leads to turnovers (but also leads, more often than not, to points). With a 6'7" center (with good hands) on the floor and the expected increased minutes from Brink (farther away from the basket) I predict both Jones' and the team's assist to turnover ratio will improve.
The key to this season will be how fast we can integrate/develop the new players and how quickly players adjust to their new roles.  I'm not as worried about UConn this season.  They had three #1 recruits and one #2 recruit that played against us in the Final Four game last season. With injuries and the absence of any blockbuster transfers, they haven't been able to reload as in the past.  That South Carolina roster is insane though.  It'll come down to matchups.  But no matter what happens, I can't wait to watch these incredible athletes compete!

We're all looking forward to seeing Betts and I think we agree about her potential in becoming a truly dominating post, if not by season's end then certainly by her sophomore year.  But she needs to develop more arm strength and more explosiveness going up for her shot.  That's what Kiki does for us now.

Regarding Brink; well over 90% of her scoring came from her low post game and while she may start out further away from the basket, I'm sure Cam's skill sets on the block are not lost on Tara and while she may be attempting more 3-pointers and mid-range shots, I think we will continue to see Cam posting up smaller players who are defending her when those opportunities arise.  Tara is placing a big emphasis on rebounding, including offensive boards.  Our best offensive rebounder last season by far was Cam so that suggests she will not be relegated to staying on the outside.

Judging by Tara's comments, it's conceivable we might be seeing Lepolo early and often.
