With that caveat, my impression from several articles is that the UC President (former president of Ohio State) knew about the move and decided that the various campuses have autonomy to do what they wish on athletics without consulting the Board of Regents. Now, the Board of Regents seems to be thinking otherwise. While university boards don't usually buck their presidents, it does happen - particularly on political hot potatoes.
Slightly OT, but I was struck by the number of UC regents who didn't attend one of the UC schools.

It is a political position. Where you went to college is unimportant. What is important is your connection to the Governor, with the primary qualifying trait being an effective campaign fund raiser.

So are you saying the UCLA move was an inside job of sorts? Did the UC President get something in return for recommending the UC schools operate autonomously when it comes to sports, so the UC Regents wouldn't get involved and potentially block UCLA from leaving the Pac for Big Ten? Could the UC Regents now be pissed they were duped and didn't get a say on such a significant matter, and now want the full board to weigh in?
I am not saying that at all, though perhaps my reference to being the former Ohio State president might leave that impression.
What I was suggesting is that normally, it is probably true that athletic department decisions are up to the individual campuses and wouldn't be a matter for the UCOP or system regents to chime in on. However, once issues hit the media, boards have a tendency to wake up and decide for themselves what is appropriate to weigh in on, regardless of policy.

According to Sports Illustrated calculations we’re the 17th most desirable school (of the 69 schools currently in Power 5 conferences) to have in a conference (based on a combination of football success, other sports success, in person football attendance, football tv viewership and academics…equally weighted).

This is a tempest in a teapot. The Regents shouldn’t be involved. It is a campus issue. If Cal was stupid enough (and they were) to build a Taj Mahal for a football program that historically has never been a player (except for two brief periods, in the early 1920’s and early 1950’s), they have only themselves to blame. Let them wallow in their misery.

If Cal was stupid enough (and they were) to build a Taj Mahal for a football program that historically has never been a player (except for two brief periods, in the early 1920’s and early 1950’s), they have only themselves to blame. Let them wallow in their misery.

You may be right. Why on earth would the governor of California be interested in something that positively impacts the states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana while somewhat hurting his own state?

Yep. It would be nice if he occasionally listened to her. Frankly, I think he has snakes in his head, at least some of the time. And he doesn't really have a scholastic pattern with his romantic objects of affection. His first wife was UC-Davis and USF law school. His mistress was Boston U. His 19 year old girlfriend (when he was 41) was Sonoma State.

If true, Stanford probably can go independent for Football and make a decent amount of money for itself. This might make the most sense at this point until a Big Ten or ACC arrangement materializes.
Stanford could schedule:
Cal, Notre Dame, USC, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Wake Forest, Army, Navy, and Air Force, maybe Rice, and then one powerhouse just to create an attraction at Stanford Stadium to sell tickets. Washington, Oregon, and any other Big Ten, SEC, or ACC that would make for a compelling opponent.
This doesn't address Bowl game affiliations. That's a discussion for another day.

Based upon her academic profile, PhD in Electrical Engineering she is on high end of acceptable fashion for engineers in general, electrical engineers in particular and at the apex of the engineering pyramid for PhD's in engineering, based upon my experience in working with said engineering disciplines. Geo-Tech Engineers are by far the most adventurous when it comes to appropriate fashion statements in office settings.

I think that sounds potentially very successful. I wonder if Cal could do the same. They'd probably want Stanford, USC, UCLA, Fresno State, Long Beach State, San Jose State, the occasional UC-Davis game, a Florida school, maybe Arizona, Arizona State, Nevada or Oregon, and their fellow large-scale public universities; e.g., Michigan once in a while, Texas, Washington, Virginia, etc., Hawaii (for the trip and to attract recruits).
