Greg Roman would be about the most uninspiring hires Stanford could make. He has 6-6 ceiling written all over him. This would be a guy taking a big salary increase to take on the the job, who has been out of college football for over 10 years.

Again, Stanford needs to hire someone who coached in college football in 2022, is familiar with the Wild West nature of player acquisition and embraces recruiting.

My top candidates after a week of pondering...

#1 Dave Aranda - Head Coach Baylor
Has a Big 12 Championship after being DC at LSU.  Is from Kern County.

#2 Brent Brennan - Head Coach San Jose State
Has a MWC Championship after being OC at Oregon State. Is from Redwood City.

#3 Troy Taylor - Head Coach Sac State
Has Sac State at 12-0 and into the FCS Quarterfinals after multiple Pac coaching positions. Is from Sacramento.

Any one of these guys would be acceptable, with Dave Aranda being a Home Run hire for Stanford.

Do we think Aranda would take the job? Don't understand why we assume Roman would be bad. He's not my first choice but I'm certainly not against him.

I also completely disagree with the idea that Stanford needs to hire an experienced head coach. Stanford is a school where there can be some runway instead of a launch pad. Just find the guy instead of closing the door on other candidates. Teevens and Harris were experienced coaches. Kirby Smart was a DC. Dabo Swinney was a WR coach. Ryan Day was an OC. There should not be a specific formula for the job. You're hiring a person, not a resume. 

I like that the search has been opaque so far. It might be annoying but is a good way to do business in sports. The Baalke 49ers were a franchise known for leaking info to the media. One of Lynch's conditions to take the job was that negations would happen behind closed doors. If news leaked about his candidacy, he was out. That's why it was such a surprise when he was hired. That's turned out pretty well overall.

The reason to hire a proven head coach is that they work out more often than coordinators or position coaches. I agree coordinators can work out, but it's a model that was much more popular a few decades ago than it is now. And when it does work out there is quite often very meaningful apprenticeship for the best coaches in the sport at the best programs. Roman coaching in college a decade ago is a bit removed from that for comfort. But he could work out.

Like I have droned on about for years in response to the "Giants finished second" for X free agent they were bidding to sign, you finish first by offering more in most circumstances. If Stanford wants Dave Aranda, they pay what it takes to get him, which would mean giving him what they were paying Shaw.

On the plus side, Baltimore won again on Sunday.  On the negative side, they won 10-9, which, if it is indicative of anything, it probably isn't that Baltimore is some offensive juggernaut.

If you are serious, you are paying your Head Coach at least $5 million/year.

That $5 million is not the going rate for a coach one really believes will be a top 30 level coach.    That would have been a decent contract in 2020 or 2021, but recently contracts seem to be adding in expectations on CFP12 and the next round of TV contracts (for the SEC and BigTen).

Mel Tucker, Michigan State's coach, got a lucrative extension midseason even with his mediocre results to date.
Same for Kiffin with his mediocre results at Ole Miss.
Deion, who will get loads from outside endorsements, has a new contract with Colorado giving him $6 million per year even though he has never coached in the FBS level before.

A decent coach with experience looking at the upcoming CFP 12 and TV deals would likely want a 5 year deal at Deion's range given the real hurdles to immediate success at Stanford and the limited likelihood of promotional deals while coaching games in the grave yard shift.

A program like Stanford could offer less, but that would all but guarantee the coach would leave for a more lucrative conference, with fewer impediments to coaching success, after any level of success in year 2 of that budget oriented contract.

I am not sure a coach from the outside will stay at Stanford after their first 7-5 type season, so potentially just bouncing in the value coach market every few years will be the plan.

If value is the theme, then Stanford's next coach could/should be one of the many NFL African-American coaches that always seem to be overlooked by NFL owners.

Lamar Jackson went to the locker room in the first half and did not return. Since the offense revolves almost entirely around him, I'm not surprised they only scored 10.

That doesn't mean I think Roman would be a good choice. He has zero head coaching experience, and I want someone completely fresh with no Stanford affiliation
