Shanahan and Wilks need to be on top of their game. For me, the Eagle loss started when Shanahan failed to challenge the long reception by DeVonta Smith on 4th and 3 on the first drive. Replays indicated he didn't catch it.

Hopefully Shanahan now has a better process than him looking up at the video board in the stadium to make challenge calls. Perhaps the Eagles are only going to show favorable replays in their stadium? Like maybe Kyle should have a coach in the booth responsible for watching the TV replays who can have messages relayed to him in real time? MLB and NHL team benches are always looking at TV replays before deciding to challenge calls or not. Seems it should be very easy to do this in the NFL.

Every team has a person in the coaches box who relays information pertaining to replays to the sideline.  The problem in Philadelphia is that the replay that revealed the dropped ball was not available until it was too late.

One can criticize Shanahan for not challenging when he saw Smith signal to his teammates to hurry up and get the next snap off (a clue something was amiss).  But no one can suggest the 49ers don’t have a system in place in the coaches box to review every play

Or, alternately, the Eagles players will be angry as hell and rededicate themselves to demonstrating how good they are.

To get to SB Niners probably will have to beat Philly twice.  In Philly.
IMO they only have to beat Philly in Philly once, the second time they play them. Both teams want to win this game, but in reality it isn't as important as it seems. Both teams will almost assuredly win their divisions. Philly has the inside track to the best record, and still will have after this game, win or lose. If the 49ers win, they will still need help even if they win out. If the Niners are to be only 0.500 against the Eagles, let that loss be now, not later :-).

My mistake.  You are of course correct.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 11-29-2023

Deebo Samuel made clear in comments yesterday that the Niners are not making too big of a deal out of the game this week. He also said Brock Purdy has not made any mention of last year's game in terms of any kind of redemption factor.

So as much as most people not playing or coaching the game attaches great meaning to it, the players are not. But I would argue Hassan Reddick talking about the NFC CG in which he knocked Purdy out, shows he is thinking about the past more than the Niners are, and wanting them to think about it so they don't focus on this week.

Anyway, as for the game, here are the numbers that matter the most to me:

Niners Run Defense: 4.0 YPC and Niners Run Offense: 4.5 YPC = +.5 YPC Niners Rush Differential
Eagles Run Defense: 4.1 YPC  and Eagles Run Offense: 4.2 YPC = +.1 YPC Eagles Rush Differential

Niners Pass Efficiency: 111.5 and Niners Pass D Efficiency: 77.1 = +34.4 PER Differential
Eagles Pass Efficiency:  94.9 and Eagles Pass Efficiency D: 94.8 = +.01 PER Differential

Niners Turnover Margin: #1
Eagles Turnover Margin: #19

These numbers say the Niners run the ball better, pass the ball better, and get more possessions per game.

My overall conclusion:

The Eagles have the 27th ranked Pass Defense. Purdy lit up the Bucs' 26th ranked unit for a perfect Passer Rating. My question is will Shanahan lean into Purdy to carry the team with his arm, because if going by logic, it makes sense for the Niners to have Purdy's NFL leading passer rating mercilessly attack the Eagles' Pass D and in so doing match or exceed his career high 37 pass attempts in this game.

Of course there is a caveat to this. The stats also show Purdy isn't as effective without a complimentary ability to run, as the games with his most passes attempted yielded a 5.8 and 8.7 YPA. His most efficient passing games have been with less than 30 attempts. This is probably true for most QBs. I'd love nothing more than to see the Niners run the ball down the Eagles' throat and have Purdy throw no more than 20 times, but I'd also love to see Purdy have a big passing day, and it seems if you had to lean more on run or pass to win, it would be pass. It's been a while since the Niners had a QB who could cary them if need be. Purdy sure seems capable.

Also, Purdy has not led the team to a come-from-behind win in the 4th quarter, while Hurts has done that twice in the last two weeks. (Granted, Purdy would have done that in the Cleveland game but for the missed FG.)

I don't find this to be much of a compelling argument. All it tells me is that the quarterback didn't get it done earlier in the game. I find it hard to fault Purdy for succeeding earlier in games and forestalling the need for a fourth quarter comeback.

19 pages of analysis for a team that's gonna win the super bowl. Either too many or too few, haven't decided. Hm.

4th quarter performance in big games defines QBs.  When you think of Montana what comes to mind?  When you think of Garrapolo failures with Niners what do you think of?

Purdy hasn’t had those  chances.  He will.  No reason to think he won’t be a good big game 4th Q QB.

Garoppolo had the same number of 4th quarter comeback wins as Patrick Mahomes, Roger Staubach and Steve Young. Should I think of him as roughly equivalent to those quarterbacks?

When I think of Montana, I think of the third best quarterback ever behind Graham and Brady. I think of him winning four Super Bowls and battles with Steve Young. He's #17 on the list for 4th quarter comebacks tied with Tannehill and behind Brady, Peyton Manning, Roethlisberger, Ryan, Brees, Stafford, Unitas, Marino, Elway, Wilson, Rivers, Tarkenton, Testaverde, Derek Carr, Favre, and Eli Manning.  Brady, I get...he's started more games than anyone.

I guess I don't think of it as an important statistic. Best QB in history IMHO, Otto Graham, is #97, tied with Craig Morton, Mike Phipps and Lynn Dickey.

RE: 2023 Niners thread - OutsiderFan - 11-30-2023

Brock Purdy has had 4 opportunities out of 17 games played to lead a comeback win.

His first opportunity was in 2022, when he led the Niners to defeat the Raiders in OT, after trailing at halftime 14-17. He led what would have been a game winning FG drive in regulation, but Robbie Gould missed at the buzzer.

His second opportunity was in 2023 at Cleveland. The Niners trailed by 2 pts and he led a what would have been a game winning FG drive in regulation, but Jake Moody missed at the buzzer.

His third opportunity was in 2023 at Minnesota. The Niners trailed by 5 pts and he threw picks on their last two drives of the game.

His fourth opportunity was in 2023 at home vs. Bengals. The Niners trialed 17-10 entering the 4th Quarter. Purdy threw one of the worst picks you will ever see inside the Bengals' 10. The Bengals punted the ball back, but Purdy threw another pick that resulted in a TD for Bengals. He drive for a TD to make it 24-17, but the Niners gave up a TD right after.

So realistically, Purdy hasn't had many opportunities to "lead 4th quarter comebacks" because his team has so rarely trailed in 4th quarters. But he has led what would have been last minute game wining FG drives in half his 4th quarter trailing situations, only to have the FG kicker miss both times.

But you need your Defense to participate in executing 4th quarter comebacks too. The Niners Defense did everything is could against Minnesota and Purdy didn't deliver. But the Defense didn't do its job in the comeback pursuit against the Bengals.

So honestly, out of 4 chances to have a 4th quarter comeback win, Purdy did his job in 2 of them, and only one of them did he really have a chance and not deliver on his end.

I don't think there is any reason to believe Purdy can't lead his team to comeback wins. He just hasn't been in many comeback situations But even in the few he has been in, he's shown he can do his part if his teammates do their job too.

Reminds me of the 1985 49ers vs. the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl. Montana led the 49ers to a comeback win. Niners scored 13 of their 20 points in the 4th quarter. I'm left to wonder why they couldn't score in the first three quarters.

Still, some common strengths at offensive positions:

Montana = Purdy
Roger Craig = McCaffrey
Rice = Aiyuk
John Taylor = Deebo
John Frank = Kittle
Rathman = Juszczyk
Wallace = Williams
Barton = McKivitz
Cross = Brendel

Lots of similarities. Would rather have Jesse Sapolu and Guy McIntyre than the guards we currently have.

The 49er Super Bowl defense was very different from this year's defense. The DBs (Lott, Fuller, Wright, McKyer) were the strength of that unit. Line (Carter, Fagan, Roberts) was strong. LBs except for Haley were good, not great (Ellison, Walter

As for Niners at Eagles, I'm heartened by these facts:

Niners 42 Cowboys 10
Cowboys 23 Eagles 28 (Cowboys with ball at 6 yard line and under a minute left before imploding)
Niners 31 Seahawks 13 (really should have been no more than 6, but 0 Offensive TDs allowed)
Seahawks 35 Cowboys 41

If the Eagles barely beat Cowboys, the Niners crushed them and the Seahawks, and the Seahawks were driving for game winning TD in final minute in Dallas, it seems the Niners will beat the Eagles.

Montana = Purdy
Roger Craig = McCaffrey
Rice = Aiyuk
John Taylor = Deebo
John Frank = Kittle
Rathman = Juszczyk
Wallace = Williams
Barton = McKivitz
Cross = Brendel

I think you mean 1988 Niners.

Bill Romanowski was a rookie in 1988 and was a good LB, even had a pick in the Super Bowl. Michael Walter and Riki Ellison were better than people think.  I remember at the time lamenting they weren't Mike Singletary or even Vaughn Johnson, but they were on two Super Bowl winning teams  - though Ellison was hurt and replaced by Matt Miller in 1989) so couldn't have been that bad!

Speaking of comebacks, this is the most bizarre one the Niners have ever had, one year previously, in 1987. Good one in honor of Bill Walsh's Birthday yesterday.

Comparative scores are a useless way to forecast.

Yep.  This is a fact that has been proven to be true repeatedly and yet some people continue to fall into the trap of utilizing them in an attempt to forecast an outcome…….

WTF is wrong with the old cranks here? I simply said I feel good based on the scores I illustrated. I don't have the right to feel the way I feel?
Are you guys the thought police now?

When are you going to accept that this is a thought sharing forum and most of what is discussed is opinion and reasons to feel a certain way? Everyone thought Oregon would win the Pac12, but Washington did. Do you now castigate yourself for getting it wrong?
