I just read that they gave the NCAA WBB Tournament MVP to Reese.  WTF?  Clark broke all records in this tourney and was the high scorer in the finals.  Wow!

To me, embracing the portal, seeing it as a good thing, is in effect valuing basketball over education. Sorry, I can't embrace it, and in the long run, I don't see it as a good thing for the athletes (I can't call all of them student-athletes) as well.

I think we would have a shot at Kayla Padilla if she finds a grad program at Stanford that works for her.  I do not object to grad transfers, provided that they actually complete a Master's degree once they transfer.  (I'd sure like to know what percentage actually do so!)

I agree, except for grad transfers.

Clark would have been a lock if Iowa had won.  Here's the history of NCAA women's DI MOP's:

An asterisk (*) next to a player's name indicates they did not play for the championship team.  So, in 42 years of women's Division I Most Outstanding Players, exactly 1 (Dawn Staley, 32 years ago) did not come from the championship team.  For better or worse "Most Outstanding Player" is almost synonymous with "Best player on the championship team"

We won't know about whether Iowa's achievement is sustainable or not until after Clark leaves.  Much the same was said about  Adia Barnes and Arizona after they made it to the national final and came within a point of victory.  Would Arizona build a dynasty or was it too dependent on Ari McDonald?  Maybe the jury is still out on Arizona, but their trip to the near-top has not so far resulted in a dynasty--they went from being a top team to a merely good team after their star left.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Cal's Curry, who is in the portal, winds up at Arizona. She's not quite as quick as McDonald, but she can really shoot. I read here that she had a 4.5 gpa in hs, so maybe we could be another option.

Arizona has a highly ranked / McDonalds All American PG, Jada Williams, in their 2023 class.  Fellow highly ranked 2022 guard, Paris Clark, just transferred out from Arizona.  Not sure that’s a situation Curry would want to transfer in to.

I thought Curry played mainly sg.

Well she would be a PG if she transferred to Stanford which is my hope because you need guards who are a threat to score off the dribble to win a national championship.

I still chuckle every time I remember ASU's Amanda Levens looking completely ticked off when the first Pac-10 tournament MOP was awarded to Nicole Powell.

I guess martyup wouldn't have given the award to Haley Jones in 2021 either:

Haley Jones: 85 total tournament points (17 points in championship game)
Aari McDonald: 149 total tournament points (22 points in championship game)

By the way, does anyone know if Clark set the record for turnovers? Hard to imagine any other team making the championship game when their PG commits 35 turnovers in a single tournament.

It's not just total statistics, it's also coming through in the clutch when you really need it. Jones made the go-ahead winning jumper in both the semifinal and championship games. Boston and McDonald missed their last, go-ahead winning shots.
