You MLB trivia mavens might like the immaculate grid: https://www.immaculategrid.com

Basically, it is a 3x3 grid in which you have to find players that match the criteria for each row and column.  For example, today's rows are Houston, LA, and Gold Glove winner and the columns are Texas, Washington, and 200 K in a season, so you would have to find a player to meet each of the nine squares:

* A player who played for both the Astros and Rangers
* A player who played for both the Astros and Nationals
* A pitcher for the Astros who struck out 200+ K in a season
* A player who played for both the Dodgers and Rangers
* A player who played for both the Dodgers and Nationals
* A pitcher for the Dodgers who struck out 200+ K in a season
* A gold glove winner for the Rangers
* A gold glove winner for the Nationals
* A gold glove pitcher who struck out 200+ K in a season

You can only use one player per square, so you can't use Nolan Ryan as the Astros/Rangers combo and the Astros/200+ K combo.  You can use any player from a franchise's history, so you can use an Expo for the Nationals answers.  The game gives you a "rarity score", so there is probably an element of pride in picking someone other than Greg Maddox as the gold glove winner with 200+ Ks.

Thanks for posting about Immaculate Grid. It's fun, but I found it to be pretty difficult!

Wilbert Robinson was a Hall of Famer who played with John McGraw on the old Baltimore Orioles, but was mainly known as the player and manager for the Brooklyn Robins (Dodgers).

He was a fireplug of a man at 5'8" and 215 pounds, very large for the 1886-1902 time frame in which played. He came by the nickname "Grapefruit."

How did he get that nickname?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2023 - PAsportsfan - 07-24-2023

His family were GF farmers?????

RE: Sports trivia thread 2023 - Mick - 07-24-2023

When he was a manager, the team was at a flying exhibition during spring training in Daytona Beach in 1915. The pilot of the plane was Ruth Law (pictured below), a woman and a daredevil pilot, which was unusual at that time. Casey Stengel and Robinson hatched the plan that she would drop a baseball from altitude so that Robinson could catch it. She realized that she'd forgotten a baseball, so she looked around the cockpit for a baseball-like object, saw a grapefruit and tossed it overboard from about 525 feet up. A grapefruit is much heavier than a baseball, and the pink grapefruit exploded when it hit Robinson's mitt. Robinson thought he was gravely injured, and yelled "Help! I'm dying! I'm bleeding to death!" -- covered, as he was, in pink fruit, which he mistook for parts of himself.

Hilarity ensued. All the players loved it, and "Grapefruit" was born. Supposedly, that's how the "Grapefruit" league got its name.
