100%. Each player is different. There are still some out there who factor in more than just NIL and basketball development into their decision. Academics and the value of the degree still matter. But there's hardly anyone who will completely disregard NIL. We can argue all we want about how it sucks, but we are finding out that 18 year olds aren't turning down hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to go to Stanford, especially when that money comes from USC, UCLA, or other good schools. We need to get into tiebreaker situations, where the academic experience can push us over the top for those players who value it. Then it becomes no different than it ever has been. Example: Would the Lopii have gone to Stanford if they had been offered $1M/year each to play at UCLA? Nope (not IMO). But if we match that offer, or even come close, they absolutely still come to Stanford.
I agree that there are also questions about the basketball development piece now that Tara has gone. Our current freshman class is so key. In the next few years, they need to put us back on the juggernaut map. In order to do that, we need to keep them. Hopefully along the way, our NIL war chest catches up enough that we can then land more top recruits. Otherwise, we will just continue to be mediocre.
There could be another issue at hand regarding recruiting challenges. It's quite possible that top recruits watch Stanford's methodical, restrictive perimeter-oriented offense and realize their talents would be wasted or limited, coming here.
Exactly, that's my biggest fear. Unless Paye decides to loosens up her offensive philosophy, that probably is too high of a hurdle to climb even if we throw NIL money at the recruits or make a Final Four run. Elite, uber-talented recruits want to showcase their talents (for sponsorships and the WNBA) and a system where their ceilings are capped and their talents minimized is not exactly enticing for them.
That's why I was hoping for a change of pace (figuratively and literally) with Tara's successor. The current on-court offense, especially with the talented freshmen class we now have, is very concerning.
Maybe we'll open it up some more against tougher foes coming up, but we'll be an easy out when we face off against Tennessee or the ACC conference slate if we stick to our current offensive gameplan
+1 to what S&P and Farm07 say! It's early enough in the season to start trying some new, more dynamic schemes on offense, too.

I mean, why even have a basketball team at this point? No coach will ever run the offense that we want them to run and thus no decent recruit will ever pick Stanford, so we will just suffer a death spiral and descend to oblivion. Kill me now.
Sheesh, guys (and gals). Sometimes recruits pick somewhere else. Almost never do we know the reason (even when the recruit says something, it may or may not be the true reason). Sometimes we have poor games. There are a myriad of reasons for that, including the fact that a) we feature a lot of freshmen heavily, b) the defense has something to say about things and a good coach will exploit match-ups rather than force a particular style, c) we do have to work within our limitations and d) sometimes teams have good nights and sometimes they have not-so-good nights. I too would like a faster paced offense, and to crush all our opponents, but I will settle for any game where we score more points than the opponents and recognize that sometimes, these are going to be a slog. We will lose some games, though hopefully fewer than before.
Still, I would advise enjoying what we have, and given that the biggest drop-off last year was actually defensive, I’m happy that so far, none of our opponents have broken 60 points and that they are averaging 50.25 ppg. I hope we keep up the defensive intensity as the caliber of opponent improves.

I imagine you must not spend too much time with intense sports fans...I think what I've and others have said are measured observations not just from the beginning of this season but over the last few (I know more than a few people who often like to make broad conclusions based on a few plays within a game).
Respectfully, I feel like you are missing the forest for the trees. If these examples have been isolated, I would not be as worried as I am. I also mentioned that hopefully, our offense will become more fluid once our competition improves, but to provide one example, our criticism of the aimlessly passing around the perimeter offense is not exactly a brand new concern but one pointed out repeatedly.

Intense sports fan here and I’m with BC! I’m going to enjoy what we have! I liked what I saw from Clardy and Lepolo against WSU (minus a couple of turnovers), and they are both keys to our success this season. I think we have high potential.

Yes, I noticed that too. I'm cautiously optimistic that their announcement info is being hyped together and Stanford is the only school in both of their finalist lists.

Fope Ayo is a Nigerian post -- keep the pipeline flowing!
Ngenda shot 55% (!) behind the arc for the year -- we surely could use another sharpshooter. She was also the Gatorade player of the year for New Hampshire, and we seem to have done pretty well recently with an underrated New Hampshire Gatorade POY on the men's side. Could we find more hidden gold in the same state?
Fingers crossed for both!

Therebeen a lot in this thread recently that's more about this year's team than about recruiting. Maybe better placed in the wbb 2025-26 thread. Just a thought. Then comments being made there could link up with these

One needs to remember that the requirements for admissions does play a roll in recruiting. There are posters and followers of this board who may very well know which recruits final decision was impacted by admission requirements.

With new rules going into effect next year the roster limit will be 15 with no walk-ons above that allowed.

I'm about 80% sure that (unless things change soon) Eschmeyer will transfer. Colorado, UCLA and USC likely targets, which means Umeh will be the only other true Big on the 2026-2027 roster. Kate may be OK with that since the offense is not post-centered.
