Re: WBB: Stanford 71 Purdue 65 in overtime - TheFarm07 - 11-29-2015

Texas beat Tennessee 64-53 today and it seemed from the recap that Tennessee had trouble getting the ball inside against Texas' tall frontcourt and then Texas's guards stepped up as well, though DeShields is nursing an injury despite 24 pts and 11 rebounds.

If we upset Texas on their home court, it might be as big news as losing to Santa Clara.

Texas looks very good this year.  We did take them to overtime on our home court last year.  The question is, at this point, are we as good as we were a year ago, after beating UConn and sending Texas to overtime?  Unfortunately, I don't think we are there yet.  We lost Amber and Bonnie, and Kaylee was playing at a higher level a year ago--perhaps because of some undisclosed injury she may have this year.  (I think of all those repetitive stress injuries to feet and shins that get aggravated by overuse.)  Of our freshmen only Alanna seems ready for extensive playtime just yet, and Tara has not thrown her into the fray as a freshman to the same extent she did Kaylee a year ago.  So, we have not quite replaced our losses yet, and we have been struggling to beat average teams.

So, how do we beat Texas, which has very athletics 6'7" and 6'5" posts?

1) While they are not as tall or athletic, both Purdue and Dayton presented similar problems for Erica--as will many Pac 12 teams.  Basically, Erica must learn to sink those 8-12 foot jumpers at least 50% of the time.  You can see she was trying to do so in the last two games and made one or two per game--but missed twice as many of them as she made.  I was pleased to see her make all her free throws--a similar range.  If she can become deadly from the midrange jumper, she will be so much more versatile and effective against taller players.  She can then crash the boards for her own rebounds.

2) Kaylee needs to get back to her rebounding form of a year ago.  Even if she does not score a point, if she can get into double digit rebounds she can deny those tall Texas posts so many second chance points.

3) Alanna and Kailee can make treys.  When they are on the perimeter they can force the Texas trees to come out to defend them, opening up the middle for drives if they do, draining treys if they don't.  So Alanna can get hot and Kailee can exhibit some self-confidence about making those shots when they are wide open.  I don't think guards in a zone can defend either of them on the perimeter.

4) We can screen to get open threes.  Karlie's range is easily a couple of steps back from the line--it should be easy for her to shoot over the top of one of our own bigs standing on the perimeter.  Purdue was doing that to us yesterday.

If we do all these things, and the planets line up just so.....

Garvin, thanks for the on-the-scene report.  Yes, it was clear from the announcer that ND was a common foe, and that anyone who beats them earns some gratitude.

Purdue is now 5-1, with a win over #22 Louisville the day before we beat them.  I don't think it hurts us too much to beat them in OT.  Either Dayton is better than advertised or Louisville is worse, since Dayton also upset #22 Louisville.

#1 Morrissette and #25 Wilson almost were our undoing.  Each did wind up with 4 fouls, but once those 3s started falling in the 2nd half, they kept coming. (8/16 in the 2nd half).  They got open shots with the curl around the double screen at the top of the key, which I thought we should be able to stop after the first, but they still got them.  Near the end, they set it up but played a different option.  On D, we were scrambling so much, trying to double people up, that there was almost always someone open.  We got burned on a number of 3s from that

I wondered why our defensive assignments changed at the start of the 2nd half, if we had the lead and had shut down Purdue reasonably well.  I still don't know why.

Re the FTs.  It was impressive, and we needed every one of the 16 of 17 we hit in regulation.  Other than 4 or 5 perfect days (each with 13 or fewer FT), this was our best percentage.  There are 5 4 games with 100% free throws (min 8) (13/13 2/29/12; 8/8 12/22/11; 13/13 2/11/05;  11/11 11/30/0503 .
Next best, from the record book, on 2/12/83 against SDSU we were 22 of 23.  Also 17/18 vs ASU in 2004.  33/35 vs Santa Clara (2005) and UCLA (2002).

Anyone know how to report errors in Stanford WBB record books?

reports that Stanford was 100% from the free throw line on 12/15/12 against Pacific but the box score

shows we were 16/20 that day.
Also the 100% FT game vs Georgia is listed as 11/30/05, when it was actually 11/30/03.

Re the late foul on Bri's 3pt attempt, see it at  1:58:29 in the video at

The defensive player clearly knocks her back a couple of feet by putting her shoulder into Bri's chest as Bri is in the air.
There was an earlier foul that the announcer didn't see.  As I recall the defender ran through the legs of our shooter as she was in the air.

Regarding the Louisville coach's behavior:  If he really was that bad, why is it that the Purdue (not Louisville) bench got two technicals during their game with Louisville?  Maybe the Louisville coach saw that worked to get a win and emulated it?

The Purdue coach was standing immediately adjacent to or on the court during play, even when that was our offensive end (for instance, look at 16:13 or 17:10 in the video).  I wanted one of our players to run by her and get clipped by her arm or foot, and see what was called.  Why should our players have to deal with her occupying space so close to the play?

Congratulations to the team.
Best part of weekend being over is NEVER having to listen to that annoying announcer again.
MT, great job on all the stats. Was wonderful to see consistent free throw shooting.

Yes, indeed.  The annoying Purdue announcer was flat-out wrong.  The defender jumped, twisted in air, but hit Bri with the whole side of her body--so it wasn't even a niggling hand check.  I think it may have fooled some people because the defender was looking back toward the basket while twisting at the time she descended into Bri's chest.  Truthfully the ball was away before contact, but the flying body certainly altered the shot.  Interesting that the Purdue coach called it a "phantom" foul after the game.  She did admit that they had fouled us way too much, in general.  Near perfect free throw shooting simply made it more noticeable.

As for coaches walking on the court, in the game against George Washington, in the first half their coach was walking out and standing several feet on the court during game play.  I started shouting "Get off the court!" and "Technical!" and I think during a lull in crowd noise I was heard.  Or maybe not :P  In any case, a ref talked to him and he nonchalantly sauntered back to his box.

Just how far into the court are coaches allowed to go before the refs T them up?

By the way, AP rankings are out and we fell to 16.  ASU is at 17 after losing to Kentucky and South Carolina.  Oregon State still at 7 and undefeated, though they haven't really played anyone.

Fouling after the shot is away still is and should be a foul even if it doesn't physically alter the shot. Shooters are supposed to be protected so that they can concentrate on shooting and not have to worry about protecting themselves from being knocked down and possibly injured after they release the shot.
