we joke about this "most powerful person in the world" when we're at the games, we know nothing will happen until they move out of bounds and we sit across the field from him/her so we can readily tell when the action is about to resume......

Here's why I didn't know:
2011 - Didn't watch, not interested, as no Pac 10 rep played in it (was TCU vs Wisconsin)
2012 - Only got glimpses of Rose Bowl on big screen TV as I was occupied at Fiesta Bowl SAA tailgate
2013 - Didn't have TV nearby.  Was sitting on 40 yard line in some place called Arroyo Seco  :)
2014 - Same thing.  No TV nearby
2015 - Didn't remember channel, since I was lamenting how I wasn't in some place called Arroyo Seco
2016 - Won't be watching TV.  Arroyo Seco again (bummer!)

I also think this is biased because my understanding is that the Rose Bowl gives a larger proportion of tickets to the schools than other games so the supply is more limited and tickets are only in the hands of the corporate fatcats and big donors who get the same seats every year.

Give it 2-3 weeks for all the schools' season ticket holders & alumni to get their tickets and then have another look.  IIRC, in the week leading up the RB there were many seats on StubHub at or below face value.  maybe not between the goal lines, but certainly in the endzones.

According to a thread on reddit Iowa's ticket office has received requests for 44,000 tickets. Their allotment is 22,000. Supposedly they've reached out to us to see about extras. I imagine the reply was something along the lines of "lol".

Kicking myself for not having thought of that.

And a lot of those tickets on StubHub are going to Iowa addresses:

I mean, did we expect anything else? There's probably not a ton of RB fatigue on our side, but it's hard to compete with a much larger fanbase that hasn't been in 30 years.

Re: Rose Bowl tickets are 3X as expensive as any other bowl game - BostonCard - 12-11-2015

No, no surprise, except that Iowa fans are snapping up Rose Bowl tickets at a greater pace than, say Alabama and MSU fans are nabbing Cotton Bowl tickets.

Nor is it necessarily a bad thing.  While I obviously would want as many fans in cardinal and white as possible, I do think that having excited fans out there, even if they are rooting for the other team, makes the Rose Bowl special.  The two Rose Bowls I went to were both super exciting and great events.  Obviously, the first time we went in a while was awesome, and it was great to have a dominant Stanford section.  The MSU game was no less fun, even though MSU fans probably outnumbered Stanford fans 2:1.  I think there is something about the Rose Bowl and electrified fan bases that just makes it a great experience.  I expect this year to be so again, even if it is being driven by Iowa fans.

I wonder how much of that is them saving up for the NCG. I guess it's also that, like you say, for Pac and B1G schools the Rose Bowl is just... different. I remember Wilner saying a few times that many older Stanford fans probably prefer a Rose Bowl to a CFP/BCSCG berth, and he's almost certainly right.

Speaking as a somewhat older Stanford fan, I'd have to say that getting into the National Championship Playoff is my preference.  However, it is due almost entirely to the newness of our realistic prospects for such and the intrigue of uncharted territory.

Plus, the first two years that I was at Stanford we went to and won (as dramatic underdogs) two Rose Bowls.  Truth be told, I was a little miffed each of the next 28 years until we went again.  Now that we're starting to get a little closer to my expectations of going every year, I'm almost ready for a new challenge.

when I graduated ('82) I was thinking if we got to the Rose Bowl once in my lifetime that would be fantastic.....those expectations have been exceeded  :)

Stanford sold out its Rose Bowl allotment.  I assume that means 22K tickets.  But the Rose Bowl holds 93K.  Going to be a lot of black and gold in the crowd.

Technically we did it 4 times in 4 years.  We just had an allotment of 0 last year...

I think every Pacwhateverschool gets some tickets, for VIPs, etc.  might have changed.

Those other after market prices are all cheaper than the Rose Bowl face value.

Re: Rose Bowl tickets are 3X as expensive as any other bowl game - BostonCard - 12-14-2015

$18 for the peach bowl has gotta sting.  I know FSU probably is disappointed not to have won the ACC or been in the playoff, and Houston is a Group of 5 team, but Atlanta is easy to get to and not far from FSU.

And it has got to be embarrassing for one of the playoff games to be going for $42.

The Rose Bowl isn't called The Granddaddy of them All just because it's been around awhile.

Re: Rose Bowl tickets are 3X as expensive as any other bowl game - terry - 12-14-2015

Those ticket prices for the playoff semifinals hint at one of the problems with a playoff system: the issue of whether fans will travel to attend multiple rounds of playoff games. Based on those ticket prices, I'm guessing that many fans of the final four schools, though they might have traveled for a single bowl game, have decided not to travel for both a semifinal and a final game. I suspect that many of them are skipping the semifinal, saving their money and vacation days, and planning to attend the final game if their team qualifies.

That's a big reason why I prefer only the title game being neutral-site, but given that everything in CFB is driven by the almighty dollar, that was never going to happen.

Re: Rose Bowl tickets are 3X as expensive as any other bowl game - fullmetal - 12-14-2015

Those semifinal sites are going to have to count on big TV bucks to offset the hedging fan bases holding back on travel.  I'm sure the TV contracts more than compensate...
