At 78, was Musberger referring to AJ's GF or his mother?

BC

Good question.  I originally thought GF, but now I'm not so sure...
Watching it I thought his first attention was to the gf but then shifted to the mother as a more likely target.  LOL.

Perhaps there's a grandmother further out of camera range to whom BM was referring...

Keith Jackson is still alive, but he's 87 years old and he hasn't called a game in 10 years. His last game was the 2006 Rose Bowl (Texas vs. U*S*C).

Re: "you are looking live" - jacketree - 12-09-2015

Those two were great at last year's Orange Bowl.  Of course they could have been Lithuanian announcers speaking Chinese and I would have enjoyed that game. Funny how that works. They must be doing so many games over that weekend they need help from Mr. YALL.  Of course he broadcast my one national title along with Vermeill.  I do like ole Vern and Gary from some giant Southern stadium, and miss the Jim Nance and Tim Brandt team.  "Let's go down to the field and DOCTOR Jerry Punch."  Heck, I even remember Curt Gowdy doing games and of course Kieth and Frank (Broyles) in his awesome drawl.  "Poise, poise, poise, Keith....."

ESPN's broadcasting teams are pretty good for the most part. Palmer's grown on me.  The Dwag (Pollack) is just a Dwag. He can't help himself.

Fowler and Herbie
Nestler and Blackledge
McDonough and Spielman (love Spielman)
Flemming and Spielman
Tessitore and Palmer
Flemming and Brown (the latter needs a little work)
Patrick and Cunningham
Pasch and Griese
Wischussen and Huard
Jones and Gilmore

Then it kind of falls off...

Dang, I really do watch a lot of college football.

I always liked Pat Summerall.  He called our 1977 Sun Bowl, along with Tom Brookshier and Burt Reynolds!  Pat died in 2013.  A good voice, smooth cadence, and the knowledge that comes from having been a pro player.  Something soothing about his playcalling--maybe it was because he also called golf!

Re: "you are looking live" - Extra Point - 12-09-2015

Musberger is the king of meaningless statistics.

Ugh - a retread and an anti-West Coast second-rate color commentator.

I think you're confusing Jesse Palmer with that other ESPN haircut, David Pollack, who is an $EC homer and does a lot of Stanford and Pac-12 bashing. Palmer has been a lot more sanguine and complimentary when doing our games....at least the ones I've heard.
No confusion.  Palmer is Pollack light AFAIC.  I've not heard him much this year due to attending 9 of the 14 games in person, but when I've heard him do Stanford games he is not nearly as complementary as he is of the opponent.  And when he gets interviewed on the ESPN shows he is far more effusive about other Power 5 conferences than he is about the Pac-12, but that's my opinion the fact base may have changed some this year.  People can evolve :)

Re: "you are looking live" - washingtonismoney - 12-09-2015

Palmer is dumb but mostly harmless. (Though he had a bizarre habit, in 2012, of saying Stanford couldn't cover anyone.)

Pollack, on the other hand, is dumb and aggressively so.

Re: "you are looking live" - indiancardinal - 12-09-2015

I think Stanford Football should invite David Pollack to spend a Saturday watching football with Condi... maybe he will learn something. Would be nice if it was made into an ESPN documentary.

Curt Gowdy with Al DeRogatis followed by Jackson with Broyles would be at the top of my list. Gowdy was understated in his style and plain-spoken. Today's announcers, generally, seem more influenced by master of hype Dick Enberg though. Mac Brown has to be the absolute worst commentator in existence. If he were paired with Fowler you'd have the worst team ever. I've come to appreciate McDonough/Spielman and Nesslor/Blackledge are good too. The rest are bad. Oh, and I wish FOX would have hired Neuheisel and put him in the booth with Gus. They'd be a good team.

p.s. autocorrect for Enberg's given name ::).

Re: "you are looking live" - winflop - 12-10-2015

Screw it I want Joe Buck and Dick Vitale to do all six games.  The beauty of this is that you could pretty much script the whole thing because no matter the play call they always say the same stupid thing.

Re: "you are looking live" - needle - 12-10-2015

Does anybody remember Walsh doing color commentary on NFL games?

As I recall, he never tried to hide his exasperation with whatever coaching follies he was witnessing. It made for entertaining television.

Re: "you are looking live" - washingtonismoney - 12-10-2015

For my money, Chris Spielman's the best color guy in college football these days. Maybe Charles Davis or Chris Collinsworth at the NFL level, though the pro game has been pretty boring this year (so I haven't paid attention.)

Re: "you are looking live" - teejers1 - 12-10-2015

Collinsworth and Boomer Esiaison (sp?) are best NFL color guys.

Harlan is a terrific play-by-play guy . . . in pretty much any sport.

Summerall was great due to his minimalist approach.  His play by play would be along lines of "Montant . . to Taylor.  First down."  And better yet, he was fine being absolutely silent and letting the crowd noise and player reactions caught on the camera do "the talking" for him.  A lost art in this era.

Re: "you are looking live" - dabigv13 - 12-10-2015

Can't stand Collinsworth because he just seems like such a smug a-hole, though his analysis is decent. Spielman is good, and I think Fowler and Herbie are pretty good too. I like Gilmore a lot.

Keith Jackson was great though. His voice and mannerisms just transport you to the Rose Bowl.

Unfortunately and sadly, I think some of Pat Summerall's soft presence as an announcer was because he wasn't all there sometimes.

It's an inspirational story of hope and redemption.  It's not easy, but it's simple.
