He's not counting against the scholarship limit...give him a chance to see what he can do.  No skin off our backs.

no offer from Stanford.  Phillips will be a walk-on.  per one of the recruiting sites, he had offers from Navy, BYU, Wyoming, Nevada, Army, Harvard, Yale and Princeton.  probably not just a pine rider in the Ivies.

110 tackles his SR year, 2 INTs with 1 returned for a TD.

named 1st team all San Diego.  looks like a good walk-on candidate.

http://sfcsathletics.net/news/2016/12/21/football-caleb-phillips-named-1st-team-all-san-diego.aspx

His recruiting profile lists him as a 195 pound tight end.  The worst team in the Ivies this year was the Columbia Lions.  They have seven tight ends on their roster.  Six of the eight are between 245 and 255 pounds, the seventh is 235 pounds, the eighth is 225 pounds.  Neither of those former two played much.  Phillips would have to gain 50 pounds to reach the average weight of the tight ends of the worst Ivy League team.

You pointed out he was all conference.  The starter at Columbia was all-conference for three years and all-state in Arkansas his senior year.  He outweighs Phillips by 55 pounds and is an inch shorter.  Phillips is running a 4.7 at 6'5" and less than 200 pounds, that's very lean.  Add 50 pounds, and does he break 5.5?  My guess is no.

To me, his profile reads no better than 4th string in the Ivies and a real possibility of getting badly hurt on Stanford's team.

I believe the "preferred walk on" means you can start practicing in the summer. Regular walk-ons have to wait until the school year starts.

This video can inspire prospective Stanford walk-ons:

That may be what Stanford means by the term, but I believe it is a term that is not used by the NCAA.

Actually, a lot of programs use the term to mean whatever they want. Apparently some imply that you have at least a roster spot. Some seem to use it simply to sound better than merely "walk-on".

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - dadof3sons - 02-10-2017

I have it on good authority (from a Cardinal Coach) they think Phillips may just be the most talented "preferred" walk-on they have had as a coaching staff.  They will redshirt him, he'll add 30-40 pounds (he has the frame).  I was told they actually see him as a 3 year starter as an OLB, so let's not write him off quite yet. :) :)

A "recruited walk on" means that the coach contacts the athlete off campus, the athlete takes an official visit, and maybe a couple of other things.

There may be some updates, but I think that is basically the rule.
Coaches often go to great lengths to ... encourage an athlete without recruiting them.

Now someone who knows better can come in and correct me.

That is exactly right.

And also it's not an "official visit".  It's an unofficial visit.  Difference being and official visit means Stanford will pay for everything for the visit-flight etc. That isn't going to happen for a walk on

And sorry if the coaches see him as a 3 year starter as Dadof3sons stated....if so there would be a schollie offered  ::)

Yep. If the walk-on takes an official visit (at Stanford's expense), that makes him a "recruited" walk-on. The coaches usually try to avoid that. A walk-on can take any number of unofficial visits (at his own expense) without becoming a "recruited" walk-on.

As we should have expected from a coaching/recruiting staff that has sustained multi-year program excellence...!  I hope this turns out as you have described :)

Does Caleb have two brothers?

We've had a fairly decent track record at getting walk-on players to be contributors and even starters for Stanford.  Wide receivers Greg Camarillo, Griff and Ryan Whalen (not related) and, David Parry, who walked on as an offensive lineman and graduated to become the Indianapolis Colts' defensive tackle.

He might get some playing time in in the Ivies. It might depend on how his body matures. I grew 7 inches in my junior and senior of HS and couldn't fill out those years to save my life. Guys can gain 25 -30 pounds without losing speed- his lower body needs to get stronger too. He is not quick so his 40 is not great but he has quite good top end speed. He would be a flex TE. BYU offered, and there is a reason 247 and Scout gave him two stars.

Re: Caleb Phillips - LB/TE from Santa Fe Christian (San Diego, CA)...? - dadof3sons - 02-10-2017

I played college basketball with 3 guys who were walk-ons, 2 of which ended up earning scholarships and starting for two years.  I can think of a few pretty decent pro football players off the top of my head who were college walk-ons (JJ Watt, Clay Matthews, Jordy Nelson, Antonio Brown, Logan Mankins, TJ Ward, Santana Moss, etc.).

All I am saying is sometimes guys can fly under the radar for whatever reasons.  Watt was a tall skinny kid out of HS and look at him now.

;) ;)

Each year we seem to pick out a walk on and get all hot and tingly over him. Hey, he could be a star, look at Ryan and Griff and David. Nothing really wrong with it I guess, even though the odds are he won't be.

A kid loves Stanford, loves ball and is willing to play for the team without a Football scholly.

As long as he dreams big and wears red in Palo Alto I'll root for him.

Now come on you skeptics - Sheath those claws!  :-)

Well, even if he's not another Whalen or Parry, he still could be another Jeff_Trojan or Craig Jones or Lee Ward, which would be pretty good.

He's doing an awfully nice job of being Caleb Phillips!!!  Participate in Division I football and get a Stanford degree.  That is really, really great!!!!!
