Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday - TheFarm07 - 03-19-2017

Arizona State couldn't close out South Carolina and falls by 3 today after taking a 11-point lead in the second half. Brunner was a force inside and the Sun Devils' guards hit some timely 3's, but Turner Thorne got a technical with the game still undecided, which seemed to swung momentum to South Carolina.

ASU did manage to go on a late run to make the last minute or so interesting and they had chances to take the lead, but a steal off a questionable attempt by an ASU guard to drive, allowed South Carolina to regain possession and ASU's attempts to tie or take the lead did not stick.

But South Carolina is a wounded #1 seed moving forward. One of their star players Alaina Coates is out for the rest of the season and their transfer from UNC that gave us fits in an Elite 8 game a few years ago, Allisha Gray was injured towards the end of the game and had to be helped back to the bench at the end of the game.

If Oregon State can make it through to an Elite 8 matchup with South Carolina, they could make them pay for these absences.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday - CompSci87 - 03-19-2017

I can't blame CTT too much for getting a T, but her timing was poor. Maybe getting one earlier in the game would have sent a message while leaving more time to make up the extra points. The game was quite a whistle-fest, with ASU seeming to get the worst of the questionable calls, though SC certainly was hurt by some of them too. CTT's T was for protesting a non-call, ironically enough.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday - M T - 03-19-2017

CTT was clearly trying to change the flow of the game.  South Carolina had been slowly climbing back in, and had taken the lead.
Her team had just scored (so they didn't lose a possession too).  She called a time out, walked out to the middle of the floor and pointed to ref Lisa Mattingly.  There was no room for anything other than a T.  (By the way, she was complaining about blatant pushing with two hands by a defender who was completely face guarding.)

I expect the coach and ref are very familiar with each other, since Mattingly officiates Stanford games often.  I don't know whether they are respectful and know this is part of the game, or whether there is something behind this.  I expect the former.

A good game by ASU.  If they had won, a somewhat disappointing season would completely turn around.  Frankly, I was surprised how well they did.  Yes, South Carolina is  hobbled.  CTT has shown a chink in SC's team now.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday - 81alum - 03-19-2017

My impression is that some of these games are being called much more closely than we have seen.  The Texas/NC State game and the South Carolina/ASU games were each dominated by fouls and foul trouble.  The Texas/NC game had 52 fouls, the ASU game had 43.

Meanwhile, Purdue has taken Notre Dame to overtime but can't pull it off.  Notre Dame loses Brianna Turner to a knee injury.  It is the walking wounded out there :(

Today, it has looked as if Notre Dame, Texas, South Carolina, and Oregon State all had tough games that were in doubt deep into their fourth quarters.  Our second game last season was a one point thriller over South Dakota State.  What is it about these round 2 games?  Let's hope tomorrow we take care of business and win in the most boring way possible.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - 81alum - 03-19-2017

So we play at 3:30 in the afternoon tomorrow.  What awful scheduling.  I won't be able to watch the game live.  I guess someone has to play during working hours.

Does that help us if a lot of fouls get called? Obviously, it would hurt if our main contributors got saddled with foul trouble, especially early and our bench, and in particularly our freshmen are untested in these critical situations. But if we got their star post player in foul trouble, then that can open a gap on the inside.

Interesting if Turner returns for N.D. and Gray for South Carolina for the Sweet 16 weekend. If they don't, it helps all the teams in their regions (including us)

Will the game be televised on ESPN?  I'll have to tape it because I will be at work.  Stanford will have to play better than they did against New Mexico State.  I thought McCall's shooting was a disaster most of the New Mexico game.  McCall is putting in the effort on both ends of the court but offensively the results are not what they were last year.

The games will be on ESPN2, but the Stanford-Kansas State game is on at the same time as 3 other games including the UConn/Syracuse game, so it depends on your geographic region. So, unless you live in California or Kansas/western Missouri, it will be rotating coverage.

I'm on the East Coast and this was the same problem on Saturday - game was scheduled for ESPN2 but they kept with the Syracuse game. Fortunately it was on ESPN3/WatchESPN. If you subscribe to ESPN, you can use the WatchESPN app or go to WatchESPN.com to pick the specific feed you'd like.

81Alum, they also immediately make the game available for rewatching once it's done, so there's no need to tape it.

Go Cardinal!!

I get upset when people who have no knowledge look for blame. 😀

Cal took away their Field Hockey Field to build more FB facilities and parking for the building.  Their Field  Hockey team played a number of games  and had practices at Stanford.    So the schools do try to help each other.  👌

Still, it's odd timing -- the game starts at 5:30 Kansas time, so they'd have to take off early, too.

My suspicion is that it's so that the second of the two games doesn't end way past the East Coast viewing window, since that market is about 60% of the TV audience. As it stands now, the games starting at 6:30 p.m. EDT won't permit a second game to begin before about 9:30 EDT and won't finish until close to midnight. I'm almost certain this is why the first set of games are starting at too-early hours even in their home markets.

I was born and raised in the Little Apple. If you get off work at 5 pm, you probably have time to go home, change into your purple-and-white, drive to and park at Fred Bramlage Coliseum, buy a hot dog and soda and find your seat by 5:30 pm.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - TheFarm07 - 03-20-2017

We lead 17-12 after one quarter. Even though KSU drained their first two baskets, our defense has gotten off to a much better start and the bonus is that we got their star post Lewis in foul trouble. She has 2 entering the second. Marta made a big mistake by going under a screen and letting their star guard get open for a three, but besides that, we've been playing better defense.

Offensively, it seems like when we are able to go on a fast break off a KSU mistake with Marta making aggressive moves to the basket, then we are successful. However, our half-court offense is still sputtering with already one shot clock violation and a couple turnovers.

However, Smith scored on an and-one right after she entered and even though she missed two long range shots, you can tell she's trying to be more aggressive. McPhee also drained a 3-pointer which was nice to see.

Fingall has already entered the game while Karlie unfortunately, but expectedly has been covered very closely and has not been able to take a shot yet.

Dear Brittney,
I apologize for ever doubting your 3pt shooting stroke.
You rule.
Happily proven wrong,

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - Viking_Guy - 03-20-2017

More than her 3 pt stroke, though.  The early drives against KSU's zone were critical to (1) drawing fouls, and (2) forcing rotations.

Halfway done, well begun.  But most especially, it's been nice to see Fingall get some run, and non-Alannas providing some offense, including Marta's early drives.

I also do think we match up better against KSU than we did against NMSU.  They're not quick at every perimeter position, and we're able to stay in front of most of them, although I was worried by some of their early drives right around Karlie.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - TheFarm07 - 03-20-2017

We lead 39-21 at halftime.

I think the second quarter showed that we are more than just Karlie and Erica. Karlie picked up her second foul early in the second and sat the rest of the half. Despite our premier sharpshooter having taken NO shots in 20 minutes of play and having to sit for most of the second, we scored 22 points in the quarter. Brit has picked up the slack with 16 points and going 4/4 from 3-point range. We also have outrebounded the Wildcats 20-9 including giving them NO offensive rebounds and picking up 6 of our own.

Defensively, with Lewis sitting on the bench because her foul trouble and our defense blanketing their shooters, we limited KSU to 9 points and it take more than 6 minutes into the quarter for them to get their first field goal.

In addition to Karlie, Bri and Kaylee both have 2 fouls a piece. But we showed our depth with Fingall contributing right away with 2 points and activity on the glass. She was also key to forcing a couple turnovers.

However, Marta has struggled with a couple traveling violations, seemingly a little unsure of what exactly to do and we threw away a couple errant passes.

On the whole though, it's been a much better beginning of the quarter. We are up by 18 with Karlie having taken no shots and the trademark Stanford defense has limited the KSU attack so far.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - TheFarm07 - 03-20-2017

Meanwhile, Oregon is leading Duke at halftime 31-26 with Hebard for 10 points and 7 rebounds, so hopefully the Ducks can pull off the upset over Duke.

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - M T - 03-20-2017

I think I remember Karlie getting a touch....

Our 4-on-4 game did pretty well in that first half.

Marta did her job early.  It seemed we deliberately are shooting from the outside, not opportunistically.

Karlie is now 0-1 (3pt attempt).
Last possession was 5 on 4 as Lewis didn't even get back on D.
This is fun.

Time for a timeout!

Re: WBB: Stanford @ Kansas State Monday 3:30 pm - TheFarm07 - 03-20-2017

We end the third quarter with a 50-32 advantage. Though we had as much as a 25-point lead early in the third, that lack of killer instinct showed again, as it seemed than whenever we have a big lead, we take our foot off the gas pedal and start being careless, including an aggravating 10-second backcourt violation.

Only Karlie's first points (a 3-pointer) stemmed a 9-0 run by Kansas State at the end of the quarter.
