Another fascinating statistic: N.D. only had 4 turnovers in the entire game. Usually when you go on a big run, you need a few turnovers by the other team so you can get some easy baskets and prevent them from scoring. With only 4 turnovers, that meant our defense had to be top notch in preventing them from scoring as much (30 points in the second half as compared to 45 in the first)

Wow, I could not express how squeezed my stomach was during the game...
Almost gave up at the end of 1st half.

Final Four!!!!

Wow!  I don't have any new analysis to offer but have to say that I just love this team.  They have no true superstars and no player who is consistently a go-to player other than Karlie Samuelson.  What they do have is a full team of players who are very coachable, keep working hard, and never give up.  I'm so thrilled for Tara and the entire team.

Cheers,
Pete F.

I overslept and watched the game on DVR without knowing the outcome. Wow, all I can say is ... WOW!

When I saw we were down by double digits, I was disappointed but not surprised, especially seeing Ogunbowale putting up big numbers and figured we had a good run, but couldn't keep up with N.D.'s offense. I was hopeful that we still had a half and could start chipping away at their lead. I was hoping we could narrow their advantage down to single digits by the end of the quarter.

I was ecstatic to see it was just a two point game entering the fourth and as I was following the fourth, saw that we battled. I got to a TV just as we were down 1 with less than a minute and Alanna was able to score in the paint to give us the advantage.

Then, those last couple minutes with the multiple timeouts and watching the last possession was so nervewrecking!! Especially with just 2.3 seconds left, I was imagining the worst, a tip-in buzzer beating winner for N.D. Luckily, they didn't have Turner and we were able to use our height advantage to block their final shot.

The halftime adjustment on Ogunbowale was amazing. After she was 8/10 for 20+ points in the first half, she was 1/6 in the second and only scored 4 or 5 more points.

So proud of this team!! Go Cardinal!!!

I watched the first half, then turned it off as I had a few too many things to do, figuring that ND was just too deep and that we didn't have anyone who could stop their athletic guards -- especially Ogunbowale.  Out of curiosity I checked the score later and rushed to catch the last 30 seconds.

I guess the one thing this team has taught me this year is to never count them out!  Fortunately I taped the game so I can watch the entire second half later.

Tara just knows how to make the right halftime adjustments, and how to press the right buttons.  And the team responds, with true grit.

They're playing on house money now.  That makes them very dangerous.

Once again, Stanford women rock!

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Votre Dame Sunday 9am Pacific - cardfan77 - 03-26-2017

For many years, Stanford teams were labeled as the nice ones or "softies" or lack of toughness and grit.  However no one can say that to this team.  This team battled and fought really hard.  Hope is never lost with this team.  When the light at the end of the tunnel got dimmer, this team finds a way.  I am so happy and proud of them.  No superstar in this team but everyone is a star.  Their GRIT is inspiring.

Tara is a tremendous coach and it showed today how much she enjoys coaching these young women.  Hopefully that is a sign that she is not retiring anytime soon.

This is the only game all year I have not been able to watch live, and I get off the plane for a half hour connection and find out we won by a point!  Superb!  I will look forward to watching the game without the nervous energy that all of you must have felt.  McPhee must have gone off.  That's all for now....I can't wait to see it all!

A few more numbers that emphasize the impressive accomplishment of the team.

Even without Turner, every ND point was scored by a McDonalds AA. Of Stanford's 76 points, only 9 were scored by McDonalds AA (McCall).

Of Stanford's 28 FGs, 22 were assisted.  Stanford really struggled against the zone in the 2Q, but the execution in the 2H was superb.

Congratulations to the players and coaches. I can't remember a Stanford women's basketball team that has shown so much improvement from the start of the season.  Maybe Tara's best coaching job as she has remained positive even when that must have required some patience.

That was just amazing.  Congrats to the team.  Down 16?  Had them right where we wanted them!

In one of her interviews Tara mentioned ND was running a diamond and one gimmick D during the second quarter.  Presumably the "one" was chasing McPhee or whichever of our PGs was  on the floor?

Anyone notice this?  I thought it was a vanilla zone at the time and I'm curious how we sprung our shooters in the second half.

Judging from Tara's animated "HOW 'BOUT THAT! HOW 'BOUT THAT!" (about 50 seconds in), she did seem more pumped than usual... wonder why?

The low-pass alley-oop Marta feeds to Britt around the 1 minute mark in this highlight real is a thing of beauty. She had another great pass to Alanna with 25 seconds to go. Great, great dishes by Marta when it counted.

Plato was wrong. Justice is any time Baylor and Kim Sulkey lose, especially before the Final Four. Glory, glory hallelujah!

Mississippi St. was led by a 41-point performance by 5'5" guard Morgan William, who lost her dad three years ago yesterday. Really incredible performance.

Apparently, Britt asked Tara during halftime to guard Ogunbowale! Everyone stepped up in the second half but Britt really was the difference on both ends of the floor. https://www.paloaltoonline.com/news/2017/03/26/for-the-stanford-women-ncaa-hoops-win-was-in-the-details

Yes, that was nice.  Usually when you try that pass from that far out something goes wrong.  Either a defender tips it or the offensive player mistimes it.  I think Britt may be Stanford's best offensive player next year.

Re: WBB: Stanford 76 Notre Dam 75 On McPhee's 27 - paloalto - 03-26-2017

I had to go somewhere near the end of the second half when Stanford was down 10 points.  I had given up.  It looked like ND's sharpshooters were in a zone.  I could kick myself for not taping the game because I didn't think there was a chance to win.  I'm glad the players don't ever think like me.

I think Britt was mainly guarding her on the first half, too; she wanted Tara to know she would do a better job on her in the second half.
