Speights and Toner stole the show I'd say. #19 at QB (Richardson?) was surprising. His throwing mechanics were different, but he seemed to more consistently make the right decisions. I wouldn't count him out...

The only receiving TD was caught by Donald Stewart, behind the defense. Given he was targeted downfield a few times, my assumption is Stewart will be the primary deep threat unless St. Brown comes in and steals the show as a Frosh.

I guess the question of "primary" relates to playing time as well as ability. I kind of believe that Shaw wants to have two wide receivers on the field under "normal" conditions, i.e not third and long. Stanford wants to run the ball. We have many very good tight ends and will certainly have some double tight end sets. If Marx is healthy, we will have a fullback in the lineup very often. That cuts down on the three and four wide sets we will see. So I expect to see Irwin out there as a "possession" receiver, and probably JJAW mostly as the other receiver. However, this could be totally wrong, both in "scheme" and in "who". Stewart did look good in the spring game, from what I hear. Question is, how much will he play? Thoughts?

I haven't seen anything but the brief videos, but I wonder/worry about the FB position. Marx was sorely missed last year. Is he OK? If not, is Williams good enough to step up?

I don't know much, other that that both Marx and Chryst are not ready to play now. Shaw has said that Chryst is "on track" to be ready at the start of fall practice, but has refrained from saying the same about Marx. I am not sure what that means about Marx. Maybe he will be ready sooner?? Or maybe not?? Any better information would be appreciated, but I doubt that such is available. About Williams (or anybody else) being able to do the job, I don't even have a guess.

Williams played a lot last season. Our running game was pretty good I'd say ð
Speights looked great. Not just his long TD run but dragging tacklers including one play dragging Phillips for several yards.Â
Toohill looked very good. As did Cotton which we need.
To be in site eyes the D was much better than the O.

Trevor Speights looks like a Dalvin Cook clone to me. Same body type, even looks like Cook when running.Â
Ron Gould is a great RB Coach, so it should come as no surprise to see all the RBs looked good yesterday. Will be interesting to see how much better Love is with Gould's tutelage. It seems there really is no reason Stanford can't roll 4 RBs in 2017. Love, Speights, Scarlett, and Maddox all look like legit Pac-12 RBs at minimum.Â

Bob, it seemed to me that last year we ran a lot more plays without a fullback on the field than "usual"? I don't have a statistic to prove it, it just seemed that way. It could have been by free choice (scheme), or it could have been that we were thin at the position with Marx out, or I could just be wrong. What is your impression?

I worry a bit about the D being better than the O. Last year, it was similar. I sort of blamed it on Thomas being so good that he disrupted everything, and there is no doubt we have a good defense this year as well, especially if we are getting the D line shored up. However, last season showed that it wasn't all just good defense. I think the real question is what is the O line going to be this year? It looks like we have some very promising running backs, (including Scarlett, which some did not expect). However, without significant line improvement, we won't be in any better shape. From what I can tell, until Herbig came in, the line didn't play well at all. If so, that is worrying.

Great thought Goose on Fuulback play last season. I would have guessed Same as before. But just a guess
Scarlett had a serious knee injury as a Sr in HS. Now healthy. Showed great speed on that TD run.
As we often discuss we play 2 D linemen about half the time. So I worry less.Â

Marx now a senior, has one full season of part time duty and two years marked by injury. If he's not ready he can still redshirt. They have Williams and the LDS kid returning. Perhaps one way to get another TE on the field is to give one some reps at FB.
For those of you who attended who played nickel?

I do not worry much at all. Our 4/nickle pass defenders are world class and our LB's are a lot better in bulk than others on this forum seem to think. The DL is weak outside of Phillips who is fragile. If Phillips stays healthy all year and others (Cotton, Jackson, etc.) step up to the plate, we could have an awesome defense. Fingers crossed!

I am not worried about the defense. My worry about the offense is based on the fact that last year the same situation, more or less, existed. We had questions possibly at LB, but Thomas was a beast, the secondary was very good, and depth doesn't matter as much in a spring game. So the theory about why the offense didn't look so good was "The offense is fine, it is just playing a very good defense". But the offense was not fine. Last year, we had, at best, significant OL problems. I worry that is still true. I expect we will have a very good defense this year, and I also expect that our QB play will be better, even if it is Burns. The OL, I am not so confident. It is true that the offense "won" the game, and we had some nice runs and some good passes, which were not as much in evidence last year. But, there was still a lot of QB pressure, and, until Herbig got into the game, things didn't look so good on the OL.

I'm not sure we can draw many conclusions from the spring game. As I recall the offense looked poor in 2010 and 2015.

For sure it is a very imperfect tool at best.

They weren't competing with each other. Each won his individual competition, IMO.
Bailey and Charlie Beall punted, with Bailey looking better.
Toner and Collin Riccitelli kicked FGs and extra points. Toner was great; Riccitelli seemed okay.
We didn't see any kickoffs. Maybe Bailey and Toner are competing there.

They alternated kicks and Riccitelli never had a turn at a field goal try. Toner's were strong and accurate. Riccitelli has a good leg, too....judging from the PATs.
