Re: The Baseball Regionals - fullmetal - 06-02-2017

Just a small bug in the Matrix, I think.  Looks like it got patched in the 7th inning ;)

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BostonCard - 06-02-2017

Through 3 1/2, we are down 1-0; Summerville has gotten into trouble, but managed to work out of it; Fullerton has stranded 5 runners in 3 innings.

In other news, Austin Slater made his debut, and got a hit and an RBI.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BostonCard - 06-02-2017

2-out RBI single ties it at 1 in the fifth.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BostonCard - 06-02-2017

Down 3-1 in the middle of the 6th.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - JJJ - 06-02-2017

I don't have the audio on and only have one eye on the screen. Summerville was yanked after giving up a second run (and I think is responsible for all 3 runs).

I'm sure they explained it, but since I don't have audio, why is it that we're the visitors in this game? I'm sure there's a logical explanation (like the way it pans out later in the double elimination tourney), but if we're the higher seed and this is our regional, I wouldn't have minded being the home team the whole way through.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BobK - 06-02-2017

We host but a coin flip decides home team

Re: The Baseball Regionals - StanfordMatt - 06-02-2017

Not that it would've made a difference tonight, but seems to me that they shouldn't start flipping coins to determine home/away until game 5.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - DC 86 - 06-02-2017

There are a set of rules to determine the "home" team, specifically:

1. The institution that has been the home team the fewer number of times in that particular tournament shall be
designated the home team.
2. If the two teams are equal in this respect but unequal in the number of times they were the visitor, then the
team that has been the visitor more often will be designated the home team.
3. If the two teams are equal in the number of times that they have been home and visitor:
a. If the two teams have met previously in that particular tournament, the visitor in the previous game shall
be the home team in the game in question.
b. The team that was visitor in its preceding game shall be the home team, unless both teams were visitors
in their preceding games.

In the case of tonight's game, Stanford and Fullerton had each played one game and been the home team for that game, so the above rules didn't settle the matter, hence the coin toss. Over the course of the tournament the rules for determining the home team do ensure as much fairness as possible.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - JJJ - 06-02-2017

Thanks. It appears we're visitors again tomorrow. "Let's play two!"

Re: The Baseball Regionals - OutsiderFan - 06-03-2017

Though it sucks to lose the second game of a regional and be forced to win three in a row to win one if you do, the best teams have the depth to do it, and it isn't all that uncommon that this happens.  Stanford wouldn't have had the record it did without the kind of depth needed to pull it off, so I don't think there is great cause for alarm.  It just means Stanford must play and win one more game than Fullerton does to win the regional.

I disagree. The higher seed should be the home team. It's part of the advantage of being the higher seed.

I would hate to see such a significant advantage based on the whims of the selection committee, with its love of the RPI and apparent very high regard for SEC and ACC teams. In this particular year it would be nice for Stanford to benefit (at least in the regionals and super regionals) but in general it would create a case where Stanford would often be the road team in the regional championship, all the super regional games and most/all of the CWS games, based strictly on the committee's rankings which may or may not be objective and accurate.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - oldalum - 06-03-2017

It seems to me the ideal for a national playoff to determine the best team in the nation is to play on a neutral field (like they do at the CWS). I don't see why host teams should be given any extra unnecessary advantages; if they are and play better than their visiting opponents they should and will win, and if they don't play better they should lose. Playing at home, on your home field, in front of your home fans, is an advantage that can't be countered for the games before the CWS. As I recall the home team designation is done so as to even out the number of times each team gets to be the home team, which seems reasonable to me.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BobK - 06-03-2017

On the baseball front it's Castellanos against BYU

Re: The Baseball Regionals - JJJ - 06-03-2017

0-0 through 4 innings.
Our #3 hitter Brodey led off the inning with a triple, but a soft line drive to 2B, K, and F9 followed.
Fortunately for us, Casty then shut them down with a quick inning, not giving them the momentum.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - BobK - 06-03-2017

Top of  7 and it's 6-1 Stanford
HRs are a flying out

Re: The Baseball Regionals - JJJ - 06-03-2017

When it rains, it pours.
Top 8, now 9-1.

And the winner of this game is the home team for the 6pm game vs Fullerton.  8)

The higher seeded team should always be the home team, IMO. The higher seeds have earned it.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - JJJ - 06-03-2017

The first one is in the books, 9-1 as Casty goes the distance!

6pm start for game 2 revenge match vs the Titans.

Re: The Baseball Regionals - Langdude - 06-03-2017

It is good he pitched a CG; we're gonna need the bullpen if we get past Fullerton...
