If the NFL really wanted to help kids graduate and stay in school, they would start all formal activities for rookies after mid-June, and, in fact, they would hold the draft in June.  It might not keep students in school (after all, many would not enroll in the spring quarter in order to prepare for the draft).

depending on course sequencing in any given major they may have to take required course in spring quarter senior year.  As a chemical engineering major I had at least one, and I think two, required chemical engineering classes that quarter

Your experience as a chemical engineering major may not be all that generalizable.  I don't know if it is still the case, but when I was there, no major had a higher unit requirement for graduation than ChemE.  ChemE majors essentially had to  take virtually all the requirements to graduate with a degree in chemistry (my own major), plus the engineering fundamentals, plus ChemE specific classes.

Yes, that does happen, particularly in engineering. I don't know if it is still true, but it used to be that the School of Engineering got around the maximum number of "required units" allowed by the University by requiring classes that had prerequisites that were not themselves required. I don't know if you were planning to not attend in the spring, but I expect that if that were the case you could have altered your schedule to get those classes early. It might be that classes taught every other year in the spring would be unreachable, but otherwise it is usually possible to work around this issue without even getting some kind of substitution approved. Given the "designer" nature of many of the current majors, I expect this is a very rare problem now.

the chemical engineering classes (at least back then) were each offered once per year and as I almost all of them were in junior and senior year with freshman and sophomore year filled with things like organic chem, calculus, physical chem (to your point on "non-required" classes only the 3rd quarter of p-chem was required, the first two quarters were not and were "free electives"), non-core engineering classes and the various non-engineering related requirements to graduate.

To avoid having to take the required chemical engineering classes spring quarter of senior year you would have had to take them spring quarter of junior year and then would have had four chemical engineering classes plus probably another class or two (the chemical engineering classes were each three units) spring quarter of junior year which would not have been a lot of fun.

Yes, that could be a difficult quarter. One wouldn't do that without a reason. On the other hand, at least in my recollection, in Engineering there were several two quarter sequences that had no spring quarter component, i.e. you took them fall winter or winter spring. That does leave a natural "hole" in spring quarter that could be filed with "single" classes. And look at the bright side. It is the shortest quarter ;D

It's an excellent rule designed to keep drafted players in school. Just outstanding.

You and I have very different definitions of "excellent" and "outstanding."

Ah...I think you missed the invisible sarcasm tag there...

Perhaps I did, I tend to do that.

We should all start using phenomenal as our sarcasm tag.  Just a phenomenal rule for the good of the students.

Why wait until mid-June?  The BigTen and SEC schools almost all finish up in early May.  The current structure allows most of the FBS players to leave their highly structured life as a college scholarship athlete and go directly to the NFL camps.

Over the years waiting until June would have only helped Stanford and a small number of other schools.
Waiting until June would have left a bunch of athletes with a ~30 window away from their college handlers.  That sounds like a PR disaster waiting to happen.
Current timing works for most schools, and the league rule prevents NFL teams from encouraging quarter based kids to drop out.

FWIW - When is a good time for football players to take courses?  The fall is bad, obviously.  For a senior the winter is not great as the combine prep, combine week and NFL pre-draft workouts consume time.  The spring is not helpful for those one the edge of make an NFL roster, but if one needs just a few credits....
