Re: QB Play - washingtonismoney - 10-16-2017

Oregon's DBs may have looked bad...but that's not a general trend from them. As noted elsewhere the team is 4th in the country in sacks per game. They're a respectable 36th in the country in yards per attempt surrendered. This is a fairly legitimate defense.

Now, whether or not the effectiveness is down to Chryst or something else in our offense, is hard for me to say. Both Chryst and Costello made some excellent throws on Saturday. Whether that's because the overall team is so strong, or both Chryst and Costello are good, or some combination of both factors, is hard for me to say. But performance is good. Be happy!

Re: QB Play - lex24 - 10-16-2017

If KC plays like he has last two weeks it won't be an issue. Accuracy has been terrific. Admittedly surprising to me. Also he and JJ got a good thing going. Next step, secondary receivers.

We (I) were ready to bury him after SDS/ UCLA start.  He comes back playing his best football. Tells you something about him.

I also like Costello. Maybe they have  two good QB's. With Mills in the wings. Can be a nice problem to have.

But Shaw has to stick with one. Taking out KC after 3 straight TD drives was the wrong choice. It hurt Stanfords offensive rhythm for a bit.

(10-16-2017, 08:13 AM)teejers1 link Wrote:Hard to see Shaw giving Costello more snaps, barring two things we'd rather not see (i) injury, or (ii) sustained bad performance.

We'll see if Chryst can continue to drop it in a basket on deep sideline passes where the WR is well covered.  Those were the completions that surprised/impressed me the most.

And 0 sacks in four games is nice.  Very nice.

Re: QB Play - BostonCard - 10-16-2017

Our QB's have definitely benefitted from the pocket being kept clean for them.  Not only were they not sacked, I think I only remember one time when they were pressured or knocked down.  A good OL can make an average QB look good.

That being said, Chryst was hitting his receivers in such a way as he didn't earlier in the year. Gone are the lawn darts, and pretty much, none of the throws were even behind the receivers.  Pretty much he was hitting them in stride and on the money.  And, aside from the lack of pressure, it doesn't matter how bad the defense is; the QB has to get the throws to the receivers and you can tell if it is an accurate throw or if the receiver had to make a play to help out the QB.  If anything, Chryst was let down by his receivers: once by the JJAW bobble that turned a sure touchdown into an interception, and once on another sideline throw that was bobbled out of bounds but should have been caught.

At least one resulted in a Roughing the Passer.

Re: QB Play - Hank 91 - 10-16-2017

The other thing to note is the impact Bryce Love has on the passing game, and not just on designed play action. Oregon was so worried about him that there safeties (they actually had just one true safety) had to focus on run defense. Those deep balls to Arcega-Whiteside didn't come off play action, I don't think, but the defensive back never had any help. The safety wasn't even in the frame. With the best running back in America in his backfield, excellent protection from his line, and single coverage on a talented wide receiver, Chryst was living every quarterback's dream. And just so we're clear, I don't point that out to diminish what he accomplished on Saturday night. After the game I wrote that it was the best game of Chryst's career, and I was happy to see others here voice that same sentiment.

So just out of curiosity, is it possible that maybe Shaw, Bloomgren, and Pritchard know what they're doing?

Re: QB Play - amartinsu13 - 10-16-2017

Keller Chryst recognized as the #3 QB in the nation in week 7 by ESPN:

http://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/21034029/cfb-best-quarterbacks-week-7-2017

"Keller Chryst had only completed 52 percent of his passes with four touchdowns this season, but he broke out for a big game against Oregon in Week 7. He took advantage of an aggressive Ducks defense, going 7-for-9 with three touchdowns against the blitz. Chryst's five completions on throws 10 or more yards downfield matched the total from his previous three games, and he had his first touchdown on such a throw since Week 2. Since turning the ball over three times and drawing four sacks in Stanford's loss to San Diego State, Chryst hasn't been sacked and has only turned the ball over once in three games."

I think against UCLA or ASU, KJ Costello was recognized as one of the top 5 in this list also.

Re: QB Play - phxfan - 10-16-2017

To me it all comes down to Costello being the more mobile QB.  While KC can feast on the Oregon schools we will need first downs from the QBs legs against the Washington schools and ND.

Also, we don't know what KJ's stats would have been against Oregon.

The team that showed up Saturday night was a bad team. Not as bad as Rice, but of the caliber of some of the teams Chryst played well against last season. Also, that D ranking was in part built when their starting QB was in and they were putting points on the board and keeping the D off the field
Chryst played well against Oregon last year. That certainly made it lots easier for him to do so this year. He had "ownage" on Oregon, and he knew it. Oregon was a bad team on Saturday. They may be better than that next week, but they didn't have it Saturday, for whatever reason. I totally agree that we should not to over-interpret the result. Nice win, but it doesn't prove that we are as good as we appeared to be. WSU will be much more definitive of where we are.
[/quote]

Couple of things.
1) Echoing others, this was by far his best game I have seen.
2) Quality D or not, Chryst put several throws where only the receiver could get it.  Great job by the OL with some nice work by receivers, but I'm not going to denigrate his game because Oregon's D wasn't all that.
3) WSU? After Friday night?  Maybe Leach didn't bring his real team, but Cal doesn't come to mind when discussing even good defense.

As a team, these guys have seen significant improvement in the last 3 weeks.  They are on the right trajectory and, right now, I'm wearing my rose colored glasses. :)

Re: QB Play - washingtonismoney - 10-16-2017

I don't know why so many people are putting such stock on the Ducks being bad last year. There's more than a half-season's evidence that in fact they're solid, or at worst only below average. They're fourth in the conference in yards per attempt allowed. They're first in the country in sacks per game. Chryst (and Costello) performing well is a good indicator for the health of the passing offense.

Now, of course, it may be just blip. Certainly we've seen good games mixed with bad for Chryst. I myself wouldn't be surprised to see him go out and struggle against the Beavers in the next game. But that doesn't take away or diminish his performance Saturday, which was -- lest I repeat myself -- excellent against quality opposition.

Cal's rushing defense, by ypp, is significantly better than ours and in the top half of the conference. Same with total defense. Advanced stats don't like them as much, but they're basically on par with us. So I'm not totally confident that you can say that Cal doesn't have a good defense, they're at worst mediocre.

Re: QB Play - murky - 10-16-2017

Has anybody considered the possibility that Chryst's excellent performance is in part due to the pressure he feels with Costello nipping at his heels.  That Shaw is manipulating the QB situation, including public comments and QB rotation, in such a way to motivate his personnel.

The above is a primary reason why rotating QB's is usually not a good idea.
As a person new to being a fan of Stanford football, my opinion is that Costello's outstanding performance against UCLA earned him the right to continue as Stanford's starting QB.
I think Chryst had many opportunities to perform during the Hogan era,  7 games last season following Burns injury, and this season in the starts against Rice, USC, SDSU, and the early part if the UCLA game. If Chryst play was not outstanding during those 10 starts then why not give Costello his opportunity now ?

Re: QB Play - phxfan - 10-16-2017

I'll say again that even if the two a roughly equal as passers, Costello gets the edge from me as a running threat which will open up other parts of the offense.

Re: QB Play - BostonCard - 10-16-2017

On the other hand, the staff was clearly limiting the playbook with Costello in, so does the added dimension running make up for all the plays you don’t run because the offense has been simplified?

Re: QB Play - Langdude - 10-16-2017

I'm not convinced that Costello is a better runner than Chryst.

Re: QB Play - lex24 - 10-16-2017

Here it comes:  not fades. Fades are thrown to the outside corner for receivers to run under. I call what Stanford does "rebound". Because essentially the receiver gets piston, uses his body to screen the defender and beats him to the ball at its high point.

KC threw all 3 perfectly.

Chryst threw 2 and Costello threw 1.  (They both have initials KC.  Did you use the initials purposefully?)

You are right, they are not, strictly speaking, fades.  Still, “fade” is often used as a shorthand for any play that features a high-ish throw to the outside of the end zone.

But your criticism is fair, as the fade is a lower percentage play, as it depends more on timing and placement.  Though a well thrown fade is harder to defend,  with our bigger receivers (JJAW and Parkinson), The “rebounds” are just as hard to defend.

If Chryst has started 10 games, then I don't believe a reasonable comparison can be made unless Costello starts at least 2 or 3 more games.
Presumably, any future starts of Costello would include using more of the playbook.

Re: QB Play - BostonCard - 10-17-2017

It’s not just about starts.  Costello is a redshirt freshman, who has 1+ years in the program.  Chryst is a redshirt junior in his fourth year in the program so he’s had more time to learn, digest, and understand the playbook.
