The national ranking affects the committee.

According to their
official protocol, they consider polls well-intended but flawed.

Officially, they don't directly matter. However, there are decisions to be made, like is a 1 loss PAC-12 champion better than a 1 loss Big-12 champion, that involve things like win quality and strength of schedule that are judgement calls. At that point, the polls and public opinion do matter, no matter what the theory is. One question that interest me a lot would be this. What happens if Alabama is undefeated in the regular season, but then is upset in the SEC championship. Do they get in above a 2 loss PAC-12/Big-12 champion? Do they get in instead of a 1 loss PAC-12 champion? By the guidelines as I understand them, the answer to the 1 loss case is clearly no, but I wouldn't bet on it either way. The 2 loss case is totally unclear to me. How about a 1 loss Notre Dame? Do they get in above a 1 loss Alabama in the above scenario?

If Stanford loses Love, not only will the Cardinal's conference title hopes vanish, Stanford will be an even more unattractive bowl invite (assuming bowl eligibility). Heaven forbid.
Beyond that kind of injury to an impact player . . . no one (other than affected team and its fans) cares.Â
P.S. On another thread:Â Stanford has
no chance at CFP. But here's a more legit question: is some NY6 Bowl required to take the Pac champion? I don't think so, and I could readily see a scenario whereby Pac 12 champion Stanford gets left out (even with a healthy Love). Specifically, beat all conference foes (except WSU, who loses to UW), lose to ND, win CCG. That would make Stanford 9-4, and not very attractive to NY6 bowl hosts. Hell, a 10-3 Stanford team that beats ND might also get shutout.

The committee seeds those bowls and I believe they seed all conference champions. IIRC people were saying a non-CFP Pac-12 bid would likely be the Fiesta.

Sheesh teejers, is there no bound to your pessimism? I mean you could have looked it up and saved others from considering your dumb proposition. The Wikipedia page explains:
Quote:Twelve schools are selected for the major bowls. These include the champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 Conference and Southeastern Conference. The highest-ranked champion from the "Group of Five" conferences (American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West, and Sun Belt) is guaranteed a berth if the group's top team is not in the playoff.
Its one thing to be pessimistic about stuff that we dont know the answer to, but it takes a whole new level of wet noodleism to be pessimistic about stuff thats demonstrably false. So, yeah, it is conceivable that a 7-5 team that lost all three of its non-conference games, made the conference title as a two-loss team, and then scored an upset to claim the conference championship would make a New Years six game.
