The ESPN commentary is 90% about UConn, of course.  We barely get a mention.

Crystal Dangerfield helped UConn on a 13-0 run with treys and steals.  She is 4/4 including 2/2 treys.

Tara subbed out Sniezek for Williams early.

Crystal Dangerfield helped UConn on a 13-0 run with treys and steals.  She is 4/4 including 2/2 treys.

Not a good start to the game. After trading baskets to open, we missed a couple of ill-advised shots by Jerome and then the Huskies are just so opportunistic at generating turnovers.

The announcers have some insight on Tara's strategy.  She told them apparently that she is "going to throw a lot of people out there and see who can compete."  Already Carrington, Fingall, Dodson, and Williams have made appearances. 

Carrington and  McPhee have made open treys.

The youngsters don't look completely lost on offense, but are getting schooled on defense.  There have been no fast breaks for us--it is all about half court.  Hard to start a fast break when the other side makes every basket.

Anna Wilson is in.  She passed three times, got three deflections and got the ball back each time.  The UConn length is bothering us.

Several of our players-- Johnson, Jerome, etc. have gotten the ball with good position down low but cannot get off good shots against the UConn height and defense.  Meanwhile, Dangerfield is 3/3 from three point range.

Interesting stat: 8 turnovers in the first quarter.

Not surprising that we are down 10-26 after one quarter. After narrowing it to 8 off a McPhee trey, UConn got 8 points.

We cannot get anything going offensively with turnovers into the smothering Huskies defense and as the announcers pointed out, they are forcing the ball into our worst offensive players like Johnson.

We were at #10 in the polls, with two lopsided losses, I hope the pollsters realize who we were playing and won't penalize us too badly with next week's standings.

My thoughts: Kaylee is a liability on offense. Dodson, who is athletic,  and Fingall are not very quick. All the freshmen's passes are lazy or telegraphed or into coverage

Alanna and Brit, although not scoring, are the only ones who don't look overwhelmed

Carrington has looked good--hitting that trey and going coast-to-coast for a layup.

But this is looking like college kids playing a high school team.  The UConn defense, with all their length and fundamental soundness, is just suffocating.  So many of our shots are awkward shots to begin with.  And many deflections and turnovers off of them.

Meanwhile, we have no answer to Dangerfield.  And Katie Lou shot a trey in rhythm even though she was defended with hand in her face. 

We are struggling even to in bound the ball.

Alanna just took a midrange jumper that was wild, simply because she rushed the shot.  I think she is just rattled.  Needs to calm down and shoot the way she does in practice.

We have had quite a number of makeable three point shots, but have been clanking iron. 

Our rebounding looks much better than the other  night.  We are outrebounding UConn 18-15 at this point.  All our misses are probably helping that stat :(

UConn being so efficient on offense is not surprising; it's seldom they miss shots.

What is more disappointing but maybe not surprising is that offensively, we can't even get good shots off and then we turn the ball over half of our trips to the court and that's why we are down 30 points.

Yeah, agree with most of what everyone is saying. What's painful is that Marta's had several really open looks and she just refuses to shoot. We didn't get a shot off at the end of the first quarter because she was too busy trying to find McPhee and couldn't before time ran out. Then, midway through the second quarter, she had a great open shot for a three and tried to find someone else rather than shoot it.

Carrington has been refreshing, even if she's still a little sloppy. She reminds me a bit of McPhee in her early time at Stanford - trying to create something out of nothing, sometimes quite brilliantly, other times quite sloppily. But at least she's trying to get inside rather than just pass endlessly around the perimeter.

TBH, I think most of this is just a difference in personnel. Connecticut looks like a team that has half the best players in the country, and they practically do. Among UConn's starting five, Dangerfield was no. 3 in the country her year, KJL was no. 1, Collier was no. 6, Williams was no. 14, and Nurse was no. 33. Their "bench" includes Walker, who was the no. 1 recruit her year, and Stevens, who was no. 23. By comparison, for our starting five, McPhee was no. 25, Johnson was no. 30, Sniezek was no. 38, and Alanna and Jerome were unranked international players. Our senior and junior recruiting cycles were relatively weak (especially since Rooks was our highest ranked recruit from the 2017 class), and our sophomores aren't catching fire the way we need them to. No amount of Tara adjustments can salvage that at this early stage in the season.

I had to turn it off - it was getting too painful.

Edited to add: can the coaches pay for a sports psychologist for Sniezek? I actually feel like she has a mental barrier to shooting. When she occasionally tries, it really doesn't look that bad, so it's not even that she is a terrible shot. For some reason, her body just practically twitches at the prospect of having to shoot, which is the opposite of the instinct one should have on a basketball court...

That is a function of our inexperience, I think.  Those turnovers were spread out on everyone, though.

That is a function of our inexperience, I think.  Those turnovers were spread out on everyone, though.
