Movement away from the ball was not as good as it was in the 2nd qtr. They also stopped looking for a shot, instead looking for a pass... and not finding one.

Fingall got quite a bit of time and did well for herself 11 points and 4 rebounds on 4/6 shooting including a trey.Â
I think I heard the announcer talk about Dodson, but Dodson has not appeared in the box score.
This quarter our offense seems neither as bad as the 3rd quarter nor as good as the 2nd. With five minutes we have a 66-51 lead.

Fingall looked really good. She should have stayed in the game. I don't think Dodson has been in. Jerome and Fingall have been the subs.

Jerome nails a three!Â
Game ends Stanford 79 Kent State 54.
Several good things about this game: some better three point shooting (winding up at 35%), Marta showing offense (but then abandoning it for 3 quarters,) Carrington showing she is a reliable threat in yet another game, Fingall looking good, Williams giving some good minutes.
I'll do a brief summary at the top in a bit.

The coming out party for Carrington as far as scoring goes. But even when a Kent State Shot was made carrington was boxing out and in position for the rebound.
We got the ball in Smith in the 2nd Qtr and she scored
Dodson on a break away and hoped for a dunk but not.Â

D'oh, I thought the tournament started Friday for some reason. Thanks for the recap to give me an idea how the game went!

Happy Thanksgiving to all the posters on the Cardboard!
I didn't get a chance to watch the game, but from reading these posts and from looking at the box score:
It's very good to see that we scored 79 points with two quarters where we had 20+ points, though the dip in the 3rd quarter was annoying and a little disturbing that we let them back in the game. We did bounce back in the last 10 and stomp out any hope of a rally by Kent State.
Marta attempted 8 shots, including 4 long range jumpers? Wow, that must be a record for her in college, though it sounds like she disappeared again after the 1st quarter. Anybody who was able to watch figured out why she was so aggressive in the first 10 and then went back to her old ways? Plus she nearly had a triple-double with 10 pts, 8 rebounds and 7 assists. Interesting to see Marta grab 8 rebounds. Also, it seems that Marta played nearly the whole game. I think if Tara demonstrates to Marta that her playing time might be more contingent on her willingness to shoot the ball herself, then that would be a great incentive for her to be more of an offensive threat and make it more like 5-on-5 rather than 4-on-5.
DiJonai seems like the real deal, leading the team with 24 points. Taking away her 3 pt shots and attempts, she was a perfect 8/8 from inside the arc and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. It seems to me that she plays a similar game to Brit in many ways. It will be interesting to see how she and Brit will play together once McPhee comes back from her injury. Hopefully the sum of the two will be greater than either one individually and they will be a handful for defenses to handle.
It was great to see Alanna bounce back and produce a solid 15 pts on 7/11 shooting, though the 4 turnovers are a little concerning. We need her to provide the another anchor in the lineup to complement DiJonai and Brit as the other players develop.
Also great to see Nadia come back to play significant minutes and contribute 11 pts on 4/6 shooting, including 3/3 from inside the arc. Though it seems just based on the minutes played, Fingall is taking minutes away from Maya. I wish we can put both of them in for significant minutes.
The other point guards (Kiana, Alexa and Anna) combined for a relatively quiet 7 points and 3 assists between the three of them.
In a surprise (to us, though Belmont may be a quality team), we will not have a chance to avenge last year's loss to Gonzaga, but will instead face Belmont tomorrow in the semis with a chance to face Ohio State again Saturday evening.

Belmont is a dangerous team and will give us a real challenge. Lindy was an assistant coach there, so hopefully our team will know how to defend them. They have 4 returning starters from a year ago. Among them is the NCAA's best three point shooter--Darby Maggard--who shot 49% of her threes last season. She is down to 44% this season. Also 5'11" guard Kylee Smith--a transfer from Vanderbuilt--is averaging a mere 42% from three and scoring 18 ppg. They also have a 6'3" center who leads their rebounding.Â

I know the men's game is still in progress and in doubt. The women's game feed is now open and I expect they will start on time at 8:10. The announcer is not Kevin--I have no idea who he is.
http://www.gostanford.com/watch/?Live=1114&type=Live
Pre game interview with Tara: On last night: Nadia's best game ever at Stanford. Tonight: great opportunity for Alexa or Anna. About Belmont: excellent three point shooters. You cannot leave them open. Darby came to the Stanford basketball camp. Belmont has a post player inside surrounded by three shooters. We've had some people who have been sick, we need to keep them healthy. This is a homecoming for Lindy--never got a game scheduled here when she was playing.
Starting lineup:Â Sniezek Carrington Johnson Smith Romano
Belmont opens in match-up zone. Smith gets the first basket on an O-board. Carrington gets a trey in transition and gives us a 5 pont lead. Smith gets a block at one end and a put-back at the other for a 7-0 lead. Romano with a mid range jumper for a 9-0 lead.  Fingall first substitute. Romano with another bucket from the baseline. Half way through the first quarter we are up 12-4.
Maya Dodson in and makes a baby hook. Belmont finally gets a trey. Sniezek is shooting...but not hitting yet. Belmont is heating up and we are beginning to miss. Wilson into the game. Belmont makes another three and the first quarter ends Stanford 18 Belmont 16. Belmont has made 4 treys. We have even scoring with no one with more than 4.
The livestats are running 5-10 minutes ahead of the broadcast. Broadcast must have been delayed for the men?

In the second quarter we have had balanced scoring and are shooting 55% overall, with Carrington, Romano, and Smith leading the way each with 7 or 8 points. We have not been able to entirely shut down their three point shooting. Romano and Williams seem to be assigned to their top shooters and the announcer praised Romano's athletic close defense.
While our offense seems decent, our defense had not been sharp enough. While we have had very few turnovers and while rebounds are more or less even, Belmont's is making three point shots while we are making 2 point shots. We go into halftime tied 37-37.Â

I know this won't be popular on the board, but it's time for Tara to take off her blinders when it comes to Kaylee. Dodson and Fingall give so much more on offense and they rebound just as well as Kaylee. Both Dodson and Fingall have a much better sense of what is going on around them and where they should be. They both also look for a shot, not just for a pass.

I'm only monitoring the stats, so I have no context, but I saw we gave up a 8-0 run at the end of the half and now the game is tied at half. We were 1/7 according to the stats to finish the quarter, which is disappointing.
Ohio State crushed their semifinal opponent, so they will be waiting for the winners (hopefully us)
Biketoc, I think there's large agreement that Kaylee's offense has not developed, even in a more limited fashion, that we have hoped over her 4 years on the Farm. She's had some physical ailments as well. More surprisingly, her rebounding has not been as consistent as it was before either. I think it's largely her defense that has kept her out on the floor.
Dodson and Fingall, both of them being underclassmen, both have higher offensive ceilings than Kaylee at this point. Tara might be keeping Johnson in for defense on the Belmont posts.

We are all hoping that Dodson develops her defense well enough to earn more minutes. Fingall was not looking very sharp until the last game--she earned praise from Tara and is getting time this game. Meanwhile, Kaylee's health seems to have deteriorated and is usually playing through pain. Whichever of the three of them plays the best will get the lion's share of the minutes.
We need to blanket Maggard and Jones and disrupt their shooting, or we could easily lose this game. At least our offense seems to be decent.
We had only 3 turnovers in the first half. And we shot 49%. Hard to believe we are tied with stats like that.
Third quarter:
Announcer points out that they are leaving Sniezek alone to shoot. And so she makes one! Smith completes a three point play. And a reverse layin for Smith. Then Belmont sinks another three. Romano drains a trey! Smith coast to coast for a layup. Stanford 50 Belmont 44 midway through the third.
Smith with another layup. She has 18 points on 8-12 shooting so far. Sniezek got the message and is shooting the ball, she is 2-9, though. Sniezek is also closely defending Maggart.
Carrington with a steal and layup. Next possession, Kaylee Johnson banks it in. We are up to a 14-0 run for a 59-44 lead. Now a free throw for Alanna and make that 15-0. Then a block by Johnson, and exchanges of misses, and Wilson comes in for Sniezek.Â
Third quarter is great. We outscore Belmont 22-7 and we lead Belmont 59-44. Mostly with our starters.

Marta taking and making shots from the outside really changes what the offense can do. She needs to keep it up.

4th quarter.
Dodson is in for Johnson. Sniezek misses a trey and Smith puts it back. Finally Belmont gets a basket after being shut out for more than 9:55--almost an entire quarter. Sniezek makes another 3 in response. Kaylee Johnson seems to be heating up with 8 points and 6 rebounds so far. 69-48 with 5 minutes left in the game.
So far this is the Alanna Smith show, with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Sniezek has 7 assists and 1 turnover, and 8 points! Pretty even scoring around the team with many players in the high single digits.Â
Another Smith put back. Now we are killing clock. A remarkable turnaround in the second half on defense. All the reserves in to the game. Brewer nails a three!Â
Stanford wins 74 Belmont 53.
This sets us up against Ohio State for 8pm tomorrow. The game will overlap with the end of the football game, I think, sadly.Â
We shall see if we have improved any since losing to Ohio State the first time. Playing them without McPhee will be tough. Although playing with a healthy Carrington we may be more competitive than when we played them last with an unhealthy McPhee. This will be on a neutral court and our players have greater motivation than their players--so hopefully that will count for something.
Re: WBB: Stanford 79 Kent State 54; Stanford 74 Belmont 53; tOSU Saturday 8pm -
TheFarm07 - 11-24-2017
It will be tough. Mitchell just broke the NCAA 3-point record and had 34 points off of the previous game where Mavunga scored 35 points. In both games, Ohio State scored 100+ points.
I think we are tougher competition than either Memphis or Florida Gulf Coast, but we did give up 85 points, thanks to their 28 offensive rebounds in the season opener.
I'm sure Tara will have rebounding near the top of the list alongside containing Mitchell and Mavunga. It sounds like Romano is developing into our primary guard defender, filling in for Bri. She will certainly have her hands full.
We cannot let Ohio State run roughshod on the offensive glass; we simply cannot let a team with as much firepower as they have to get 2nd or 3rd opportunities to score on every possession.
On our end, I hope we are little more offensively put together than 2 weeks ago, even with Brit out this time around. We have scored 70+ points the last 2 games. Alanna can't get in foul trouble; we need her points to complement DiJonai.
Marta finally shooting more is something we've all clamored for since she started taking the starting point guard duties. Her passing has never been in doubt; if she can finally start shooting and making baskets, it will be a brobdingnagian bonus for us offensively, as teams can't sag off of her when she has the ball.
It should be another great test to see what the team has learned, now with 6 games under their belt.

Great to read about such a dominant second-half performance against a solid team -
Sagarin had Belmont at 38th before this game. We were 26th. By far the best team we've played apart from UConn and OSU, so the dominant performance is definitely uplifting.
Encouraged to see Marta shooting more - so far this season, she actually has a better 3-point % (.357) than overall shooting % (.267). No one is going to be wowed by her making roughly 1-in-3, but that ratio is more than solid enough that she absolutely should be keeping defenses honest with it. She's also averaging 5.5 assists per game and an assists to turnover ratio of roughly 2.2, so if she can continue to threaten around 10 points a game, I think she'll really open up the rest of our offense.
07, you're right that Carrington seems to be filling a similar spot to McPhee - streaky, can erupt out of no where and score 20-something, but can also go 1 for 9 or 3 for 12 on an off night. Both seem better at creating their own offense. I'm not exactly sure how I see them fitting together at the same time, but at least once McPhee graduates we know exactly who will step into her shoes.
And I'm glad Alanna finally got a breakout game. I think this will be a big confidence boost for her leading up to OSU. 81, you said Tara said Alanna is still working her way back into form after the summer, right? I wonder why - didn't she play international basketball with Australia most of the summer? If anything I would have thought she'd be coming back in the best shape ever, much like Bird had a breakout season her junior year after playing USA basketball.
Finally, it's nice to see Alexa continuing to develop. She's such a long guard that she can be great on defense (vs. Bri, who was smaller but really fast), and her shooting has seemed solid this season.
Fingers crossed we can at least play OSU close. A win might be a little unrealistic with McPhee out, but I'm hopeful we can improve our performance versus last game.
