Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - BigEasyCard - 12-19-2017

ColoradoTree, I'll need to review the baseball scoring structure when work lightens up.  But I think you presented it pretty well.

In the meanwhile, here's a link to an early preseason baseball ranking:

http://baseballnews.com/collegiate-baseball-div-poll-12-19-17/

Florida ranked number 1, UCLA ranked number 14, and Stanford ranked number 24.  While Baseball should score meaningful Cup points this year, I hope that as in previous years, the NACDA can award the Cup to Stanford while the NCAA Baseball Tournament is still in progress.

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - ColoradoTree - 12-19-2017

If baseball can live up to that #24 ranking, that's basically like last year--losing in the regional final, which would net 50 points.  With a first-year head coach (feels weird not to call him a manager) and losing some key contributors, I wouldn't call that too disappointing (but then again, I only really start following that team when it's close to tournament time, so I'm a pretty bad barometer of whether baseball is living up to expectations or not).  As long as we have a 51-point lead over Florida going into baseball, making the regional final would clinch it.  (Also, I realize there's a baseball breakdown right on the NACDA site which I overlooked, so, uh, whoopsie.)

Losing in the women's volleyball semis to Florida hurt, but since Florida turned around and lost the final to Nebraska, they only net seven points over us (90 to 83), so not bad at all.  I didn't realize Florida's women's basketball team was as bad as they are, but they look like they could miss the tournament, which would mitigate the damage to our cause from our men's team possibly missing the tournament.  I'm starting to feel a bit more sanguine about our chances this year.

Of course, I'm assuming Florida ends up being the primary challenger, which may not prove wise, since Florida's 90 points from women's volleyball will be its first points of the year, and football not being bowl eligible means the Gators will be well behind their 177-point haul from the fall season last year (when they made a terrific run in the spring to get up to 3rd place).  Could also be Michigan (currently second place, but will drop to fourth in Thursday's next update by getting only 25 points from WVB), Penn State (whose 83 points in WVB will put it into second place), or UCLA (whose 64 points from WVB will keep it in third place, narrowly behind Penn State).  Or somebody else!  Ohio State could still get major points in football, but its goose egg in volleyball means it won't hit last year's fall mark (which still required a big comeback in the winter and spring sports to take second place).

We had a lead of 156.5 points at the end of the fall season last year.  This year, if football wins and we finish, say, #12, we'd have 64.5 more points for a fall total of 532.5, 28 points more than last year.  Penn State's WVB points will put it at 315.50, and if things go its way with football (beat UW handily, Miami beats Wisconsin in the Orange, and UCF beats Auburn in the Peach), it could get as high as 6th, which would be 73.5 points for a fall total of 389, making our fall lead 143.5 points.  All the more reason to Back the Pac and root for UW in the Fiesta Bowl--every point counts!

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - BigEasyCard - 01-09-2018

Football earns 55 points for finishing 19th in the USA Today Amway Coaches Poll.

My unofficial tally shows the Cardinal with 523.0 points compared to 504.5 points last year.

WVB, one of the four required sports under the new scoring structure, earned 83 points.

The next official standings are due on January 11.

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - BigEasyCard - 01-16-2018

Per the official standings, Stanford finishes the Fall season leading with 523.0 points followed by Penn State with 386.0.  Here's a link to the press release:  http://www.nacda.com/sports/directorscup/spec-rel/011118aab.html

The press release contains a link to the standings.  Pac 12 and Big Ten each have four teams in the top 10.

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - Hurlburt88 - 01-16-2018

SEC not looking very balanced in terms of fall sports....

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - BigEasyCard - 03-12-2018

Unofficially Stanford now has 644.5 points including results for both ITF teams and Men's Basketball.

Changes since final Fall total of 523.0 Points:

70.5 points for 8th place finish by Women's ITF.  Last year they tied for 10th.
51.0 points for 21st place finish (5-way tie) by Men's ITF.  Last year they placed 49th.
0 points for Men's Basketball which now counts as a required scoring sport.  While not earning any points, their record improved from 14-17 last year to 18-15 this year so far, with the prospect of more wins and experience in the NIT.

The ten Stanford teams included in Cup scoring have earned 50.25 points more than the same teams did last year.

Thanks for the update, BigEasy! Do you know off the top of your head if we scored in all 10 men's sports last year, or the number of points for our tenth scoring sport? Just trying to get a sense of what we are likely to lose from the non-score in basketball, if anything.

You're welcome.  Not from the top of my head, but from my trusty spreadsheet,  Wrestling, Baseball, and Golf all score 50 points in positions 8 through 10 last year.  Men's ITF scored 23 in 11th.  Fencing was counted in 7th position for 60 points on the Men's side.

Got it. So now that it's MFB, MBB, WVB & WBB + 15 best other sports, in theory we could have more than 10 women's sports score if our 9th best women's score is better than our 7th best men's, etc., right? In other words, we no longer care about breaking down our points by gender, just the top 15 points scores by sport. So on the one hand, while the new system hurts us insofar as we had depth to score in all 20 sports, and we don't always score in MBB, now we can use our traditional strength in women's sports to offset, right?

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - BigEasyCard - 03-12-2018

Yes, that's my understanding as well, except that the required Men's sports are Basketball and Baseball.

The Directors' Cup Web site is not yet consistent on gender requirements.  The announcement on scoring structure changes effective beginning 2017-18 squares with your explanation.

Here's the link to the changes and a quote on scoring by gender:

http://www.nacda.com/sports/directorscup/spec-rel/050417aaf.html

"Adjustment of gender requirements
Since the NCAA and NAIA currently embrace and abide by the federal law (Title IX) that requires equal participation opportunities within its athletics programs, the previous gender requirements (equal sports scored in each gender) that have been used were no longer deemed necessary."

However, the "All Divisions" section of the site still refers to the 10 sports/gender constraint:

http://www.nacda.com/directorscup/nacda-directorscup-scoring.html

"All Divisions
Institutions will use the top-10 sports for each gender in Division I"

I suspect that they just haven't updated that section.

In any event, being 50 points ahead of last year through ten sports is a big plus.  And scoring to date includes 25 points for Women's Field Hockey which will almost certainly be replaced by a higher scoring team.

On the other hand, six of the ten schools just behind us in the final Fall standings made the Men's Basketball tournament this year: UCLA, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, Texas, and Duke.

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - BigEasyCard - 03-13-2018

Further to the discussion of the impact of required sports on our Cup prospects, the following table shows the current status of all four sports.  For the three sports in progress I have used Seed, Seed, and Rank respectively as a proxy for how well they are doing.  Apologies in advance for the poor formatting.

Cup Points Seed Seed Rank
StandingsSchoolWVBWBKMBKM Baseball
1Stanford834None3
2Penn State83NoneNoneNR
3Wisconsin64NoneNoneNR
4UCLA6431117
5Michigan2573NR
6Michigan State73None3NR
7North Carolina State504924
8USC73NoneNoneNR
9Colorado64NoneNoneNR
10Texas73210NR
11Duke05221

The above information suggests that UCLA is the biggest threat to outscore Stanford in the four required sports.

A more complete analysis would look deeper into baseball rankings and possibly consider Ohio State and Florida since they have each finished second to Stanford within the past five years.  In any event, we'll have a much better feel for this in a few weeks after Final Fours have concluded and we have additional official Cup scores.  In the meanwhile, we can cheer on the Women's Basketball team and resurgent Baseball.

Great once again. Thx

Thanks, BEC. Getting quite the education here.
I'm also quite impressed by how "balanced" NC State seems based on this information.
As you say, go WBB and Baseball!

I'm glad to find a way to contribute to this great board.

I should have added cheering for Men's Basketball.  While there are no longer any Cup points at stake this year, the experience in the NIT will help in years to come.  I enjoyed hearing some commentators describe Stanford as a team on the rise this year.

Does UCLA MBB get points for losing a play in game?

I think so, but the NACDA site has inconsistent information.

The points for the "64-Team" bracket (Upper right on linked PDF) show no points for teams finishing 65th or lower:

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/nacda/sports/directorscup/auto_pdf/2012-13/misc_non_event/dcscoring.pdf

However, last year Providence ( #61 on linked PDF) blew a 17-point lead and lost in the play-in against USC, and still earned 5 Cup points:

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/nacda/sports/directorscup/auto_pdf/2016-17/misc_non_event/April27FinalDIOverallUPDATE.pdf

So, I expect that the four play-in losers this year will each earn 5 Cup points.  That would give UCLA 69 Cup points so far in the required sports compared to 83 for Stanford.

Baseball's looking pretty good, just saying :)  Way better than #24 at this point in the season anyway, fingers crossed.

Yep! Making the CWS would mean no worse than 73 points, and losing the super regional would get 64 points.

Re: Directors' Cup 2017-18 - BigEasyCard - 03-17-2018

Wrestling finishes with 8.5 points in the NCAA Tournament, good for 34th place and 40 Cup points, unofficially.  This brings the Cardinal YTD unofficial total for 11 sports to 684.50 which is 40.25 points better than last year.

Here's a link to the Tournament scores: http://news.theopenmat.com/?page_id=67071

In previous two years, Stanford has placed 19th and 24th.  Hopefully they can reverse the trend starting next year.
