Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

Good Stanford possession, and boissiere hits a wonderful strike to the far post to put Stanford back in front 3-2.

67 minute.

Boissiere!

Now up 3-2.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

Mcgrady rattles the post with a hammer from 23, but it rattles just out.

Stanford possessing well, but sometimes a little too loose at the back.

76th minute.

Thanks for these reports.

Re: WSoc: Stanford v UCLA Sunday - Treefence - 12-03-2017

I thought Kiki had a iffy first half, she seemed to have happy feet with her first touch, but she has been really good so far in the 2nd half.

Full time, 3-2.

Woo-hoo!

WHOOOOOT!!!!!!!! Great job, ladies!!!!

Re: WSoc: Stanford 3 UCLA 2 114! - Treefence - 12-03-2017

Really nice job by this team, I thought they were clearly the best team all year long, it would've been really tough if this game was decided in PK's.  Great season overall, should be poised to defend our title, even though we are losing an incredible player in Sullivan.

Wonderful!  How long is the streak of years with at least one championship now?

Re: WSoc: Stanford 3 UCLA 2 114! - Viking_Guy - 12-03-2017

That's the amazing thing - this could be a rematch next year.

Will write up more after women's b-ball, but a couple further thoughts:

Last 10 minutes, while nerve-wracking, were also a demonstration that this scheduling was sheer and utter crap.  Play a game on Friday night, then play again only about 38 hours later.  Both teams really could have used another day, as their legs were dead in those last ten minutes.  Except for Kiki :).  I was yelling at Breide that she didn't have to adapt that pace of play when she came in as a sub :).

And to be truthful, a pretty shaky game by the center of our defense.  Cook's occasionally mystifying plays trying to keep possession; in addition to the first half header, she CHIPPED a ball across the field to Davidson, just barely clearing the center forward and putting Davidson under immediate pressure.  Davidson's complete whiff on the through ball that led to the PK - it was a tired play of "stick your leg out" rather than move your feet to cut it off, and that kind of play is a keeper's nightmare (although she saved Cook's bacon on several occasions with the score tied.)  And Jahansouz, with her adventures with the ball at her feet, and the misread of the second goal - she came to the near post as the ball flew over her to the back.

But UCLA will do that - they're a great offensive team, and even a little younger than we are.

It is beyond gratifying to see Andi go out with a championship.  Not even counting FINALLY taking the lead over the Bruins.

And I still am on the fence about who to cheer for in the water polo this afternoon.  I want to stay in the lead, but beyond generally despising the Toejams, I have a special loathing reserved for Vavic, not only for establishing the University of Southern Croatia, but for both the men's and women's water polo teams having mastered the special art of drawing contra-fouls by thrashing about in transition plays.

Geaux Cardinal!

This team was so much fun to watch all year.  I'm so thrilled for them.  Congratulations to the team and Coach Ratcliffe!

Jaye Boissiere named the outstanding player for the College Cup.  She could barely hold in her emotions after the match.  Unbelievable what she went through to play this year.

Simply outstanding.  What a great win for a great team!  Congratulations, Cardinal!!

Wow. Well done, ladies.

Thanks for the updates, all.

Two questions:

Sounds like we played sloppy second half and were lucky to get the W?

Sounds also like there's a good chance we would have lost if it went to PKs given the struggles of our keeper?

Soccer not at all in my wheelhouse but wow, congrats to the Stanford team that year in and year out over the last 10 years has probably been the most successful in all of Stanford team sports.

Re: WSoc: Stanford 3 UCLA 2 114! - 81alum - 12-03-2017

I got very nervous when we gave up those two second half goals, but these kids must have nerves of steel to come back, score a third goal, and hold off UCLA for another 30 minutes.  What a terrific team, fun to watch, wonderful to cheer for.  Congrats to the winners of championship 114!

:) :)

Very happy to see Stanford pick up another one; it was nerve-wrecking after UCLA came back to tie the game.

Congrats to the women's soccer team for their 2nd program title! A great way to send Andi Sullivan out with a national championship!!

Should be 42 years.  How do I know this?  My freshman year was 1975-76.  The best chances for a National Championship for Stanford that year were in Water Polo (only Men's back then) and Men's Tennis.  Unfortunately in 1976, the individual and team tennis championships were integrated.  There was a singles and doubles tournament, and each school got a point for every match won by their athlete.  So, the team championship went to the school who had players who went the deepest into the tourney.  UCLA won team title with Peter Fleming as their star.  The team concept (started with six singles and three doubles, so best of 9) came out in 1977, with a separate individual singles and doubles tourney following.  Stanford won that in 1977. with Matt Mitchell winning the singles title as well.  McEnroe arrived the following Fall 1977.

If we won a NC in tennis in 76-77, that would be #1;  77-78 would be #2;  2017-2018 would be #42.
