Even though the winner was expected, that segment on Bryce at the hospital, and then with his family, represented the Stanford brand well. The team we root for is special.

I suppose getting some pity votes at some point, like Ingram did for Bama never having a H man winner, would be nice. Won't be holding my breath though.

Stanford now has 6 Voldemort runner-up awards. That is the most of any school. So, we have that going for us.

I have no idea if this will have any weight in Love's decision to go to the NFL or not, but this outcome does leave him something else to accomplish in college. Maybe that helps keep him at Stanford. In any case, he is a great representative of the University.

I am quite pleased with this outcome. Mayfield has had it it in the bag for awhile, so no surprise there. A second place finish for Love seems just. I feel nothing like the incredible sense of outrage after Tobys and Christians places.

I think both of Luck's losses were worthy of outrage as well, personally.
I'm pretty sure if Love played for a blueblood program he'd be the winner with the stats he put up this year, but Mayfield has been ordained for so long though that I can't get too worked up about it.

With next year's OL and Costello looking trustworthy at QB, there's certainly potential for an even better year. But there's also the target on him now. (Granted the target was already there for most of this year too.)

Yes, it is hard to know exactly what will happen next year. I am sure Love will get some real good advice about where he can expect to be drafted. Then, he will have to decide what he wants. Fortunately for him, I think there are no bad decisions available. Trying to guess how he will weight the various factors is impossible, so we won't know until he tells us!

Quote:Tennessee defensive back Rashaan Gaulden doesnt care much for Kirk Herbstreits support of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield given what the ESPN analyst previously said about Gaulden.
Quote:Saying Mayfield is misunderstood is a reasonable opinion that can be easily backed up. But not after establishing a different set of standards for another player who previously committed similar actions. Someone as smart and high-profile as Herbstreit has to be consistent.
Theres no logical way to explain how Gaulden flipping off fans is worthy of being off the team while Mayfields competitive spirit has gotten the best of him when grabbing himself and shouting expletives at the other team.
Good for Gaulden for pointing that out.

To his credit Herbstreit owned up to it and said Gaulden was right that there should not be a double standard. To his discredit he became consistent by lowering his standard which was harsh but directionally closer to right IMO.
No doubt preaching to the choir on most of this but: 1) Mayfield should have missed more than a few plays as punishment & this slap on the wrist makes a mockery of discipline; 2) the award should not claim to value integrity while OJ has a vote, Manziel and Winston won and Mayfields antics seem not to have materially affected the voting; 3) they should clarify or amend the criteria but probably wont since that would highlight the recent hypocrisy.
I do think Mayfield is deserving of player of the year based on on-field performance. It would have been harsh to make an example of him given recent winner history.
Hopefully Love comes back to show how big of a year he can have if healthy and wins next year running away (bad pun intended).
Btw, while I dont condone what Reggie Bush did I feel a tiny bit sorry for him being the one exception where the award pretended to have a conscience.

They had the 3 finalists on at halftime of the Army-Navy Game (in the studio). Bryce was so articulate. As an alum, couldn't be prouder of our representative.
I always watch it. And the other two finalists always look slightly freaked out at the erudition of the Stanford candidate.
