Okay, near heart-attack averted by Werner's goal.
To be balanced, a large part of Akron's second-half pressure was generated by them taking chances with their midfield and outside defenders pressing up, and Stanford's counter-attacking chances were brought about by the space they left in the defense. The 3v1. Baird's chance, all were against a 2 man defense.
And Werner's goal was a rocket. Normally I'd be on him a bit about shooting from that narrow of an angle, but with that much pace on it from that close, just keeping it on the frame of goal is the hard part.
Woo-hoo!
More later, have to get ready for WVB. But my goodness, Jeremy Gunn, if he isn't on some pro or national team short lists, it's a waste. Although the current style is uniquely suited to college soccer's substitution rules, this is still an incredible run. We are now on 11 complete games, including 4 full double OTs and one partial, in NCAA competition without conceding.

In order:
2015
Wake Forest scored a PK in the 70th minute - Stanford won in the 97th minute of OT - 27 minutes (goal by Langsdorf)
Semifinal - Stanford 0 Akron 0 - Stanford wins shootout 8-7 in the 10th round - 110 minutes
Final - Stanford 4 Clemson 0 - 90 minutes
2016
Stanford 2 Pacific 0 90 minutes
Stanford 1 Virginia 0 - Stanford wins in the 107th minute (goal by Langsdorf) - 107 minutes
Stanford 2 Louisville 0 - 90 minutes
Stanford 0 North Carolina 0 - Stanford wins 10-9 in PKs - 110 minutes
Stanford 0 Wake Forest 0 - Stanford wins 5-4 in PKs - 110 minutes
2017
Stanford 0 Pacific 0 - Stanford wins 4-1 in PKs - 110 minutes
Stanford 2 Coastal Carolina 0 - 90 minutes
Stanford 2 Wake Forest 0 - 90 minutes
Stanford 2 Akron 0 - 90 minutes
11 games, 6 with extra time, 4 going to PKs. ONE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN MINUTES.
That's a defense.

VG, should we have any rooting interest in the UNC-IU game?

I felt just a bit sorry for the Akron keeper. Both of Stanford's goals came off beautiful shots where he really had very little chance at a save.Â
I got over it.

Well, the other semi ended with Indiana beating UNC 1-0.
It's strange - I would've rather played the Tar Heels, who play a more attacking 3-4-3, then Indiana.
A couple of reasons:
(1) Today, when they got up 1-0, the Hoosiers completely parked the bus. 20 minutes into the second half, I watched Indiana drop 9 people behind the ball, essentially playing a 6-3-1 on defense for much of the second half. Combine that with:
(2) they play about as aggressively as Stanford does, but whine a lot more about it when they get fouled, and I'm worried the final could be rather, umm, chippy. As a reminder, Indiana's best player, Grant Lilliard, is the player who was redcarded in their game against the Cardinal in Bloomington last year. We'll see if they did up the tape, but he and Langsdorf were basically entangled for most of the game.
Hope that it stays a soccer match, not a wrestling meet. Logan Panchot may be defending his brother for the Hoosiers, Austin, who played left mid (where he would matchup against Logan at right back.)

The final will be against Indiana. Certainly to be a defensive struggle. IU has given up only 6 goals all year, and have something like 18 shutouts. Once they scored against UNC, their defense looked pretty much impenetrable.
On Sunday, first team to score will almost certainly win, as I expect a 1-0, game if not PKs after a scoreless tie.
Sometimes -- okay, always -- I think soccer would be improved if the goals were made bigger. This would make outside shots much more dangerous, thereby stretching defenses outward in the way that the 3-pointer functions in basketball. And it would make comebacks from more than a goal down much more possible. As it stands, a 2-0 lead is by-and-large insurmountable.

two crummy intentional fouls by Akron players have me feeling not the least bit sorry for them. One a swipe at the face of one of our players, the other in the second half a complete throw down of our player, apparently right in front of the 4th official who of course did nothing. In general, in college soccer I have been sorely disappointed in the disappearance of the side refs and 4th ref from any meaningful participation in the game.
