Geaux Cardinal!

Make that 4th and -10 now! Two strokes back of 3rd-place Iowa State, two ahead of TCU in 5th, and now seven ahead of Oregon.  We're now closer to the lead (Alabama at -15) than we are to the wrong side of the cutline.

Following this regional is way less stressful than the women's regional, probably because my expectations for the men's team are a bit lower than for the women's team, so I can just sit back and enjoy their success.

Wu is now at -11 for the tournament, and has a 3-shot lead.

We end at -5 for the day, and -8 through 2 rounds.  We overtook TCU for fourth, and are four strokes ahead of Oregon and Colorado, who are in sixth.  All in all, pretty good shape.  Branden Wu is leading the tournament at -10, which means all Stanford players not named Wu are a combined +2.

Very tightly clustered teams in Stockton. All of the top 10 teams posted similar scores today. Alabama posted -8 to move into a tie for the lead.  TCU shot -2 to drop a bit. All of the other 8 teams shot -4, -5 or -6 which made it really tough to make a big move and create separation. Tomorrow will be incredibly pressured for all of the top 10 teams. No team is safe and none of them are really out of it either, though U.SC has the faintest chance.

Any team that struggles could find that the herd passes it quickly. And no lead will seem safe until the team finishes the brutal 17th hole which has produced some big numbers on both days.

Stanford's team has been here before. Huang is playing in his 4th regional. Wu and Swegle are in their 3rd. Salinda is in his 2nd. We can hope that that experience will serve them well in responding to the pressure.

News from other regionals:
C.al looks like they will miss the cut in Raleigh. They are in 11th place, 12 shots behind the 5th place team. This would be a major surprise. They were playing fantastic golf earlier in the spring. Maybe the greens in Florida have been too big an adjustment for them. They could be the highest ranked team to miss the NCAAs.

BYU currently sits in the 5th spot in Norman. It creates a major headache for the NCAA when BYU's men or women make the NCAA tournament because they do not play on Sundays. The BYU team would have to play by themselves on Thursday, before the rest of the field begins its Round 1 on Friday. The course setup on Thursday would have to match the Sunday setup so that BYU plays the same course as the other teams. Everyone on the NCAA tournament committee will be silently rooting for the teams behind BYU tomorrow.

Weather has delayed play both days in Kissimmee.  If the bad weather continues tomorrow and they are not able to complete the round, the results after 36 holes will stand which would mean a playoff between Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Colorado State for the final spot.

In case you cannot tell, I love this event!!

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - Spiny_Norman - 05-15-2018

Stanford starts on #10 beginning at 8 am. Playing with Oregon and TCU, same pairings as today.  Alabama, Iowa State and Kansas (the top 3 teams) start on #1 about 30 minutes earlier.  Colorado, LSU and UNC Greensboro (in T6th, T8th and T8th) start on #1 about 30 minutes after Stanford.

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - Hulk01 - 05-16-2018

'We have won a national title more recently than Oklahoma State, so it is not like Ok State has been cleaning up national titles recently, despite their obvious program history."

No question: Along with Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, and Texas, we're one of golf's traditional powers.  And, as slide mentions, we have a second-to-none practice facility/course.   It just feels odd to have a merely pretty good (#18) team. given all that and Stanford's strong appeal to student-athletes in almost every sport.

Slide--or anyone--has there been talk of building a second course?  Ours reminds me of a lot of courses--Minikahda has become a vivid example--of courses that time has passed by.  There are dozens of pro golfers who could drive Minikhada's 1st, 5th (with a two iron), 14th, and 16th holes--all par fours--and they'd have easy up and down birdies on 15 and 18.  And for a pro, there isn't a three-shot par five on the course.  If they played there often, you'd see some 57's.

Stanford's course didn't seem that extreme, but it  yielded a 59 to a college kid and  a 26 on the front to an amateur woman (Mariah Stackhouse) from the woman's tees.  That sounds too much like a punching bag.

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - Hulk01 - 05-16-2018

Assuming most of you on this thread are Stanford women's golf fans, too, a recruiting summary:

In the next class, we've landed Calista Reyes, a 4.15 student from Rancho Bernando High in San Diego who ranks fourth in her class among players expected to attend US colleges.

“I’ve wanted to go there since I was in the fifth grade; it has always been my dream school."

In the class that follows Reyes, we have a commitment from the #1 player, Angelina Ye, from Bradenton Florida by way of Shanghai, China.

And in the 2020 class, we have a commitment from the #2 player, Rachel Heck.  Ww have several reasons to suspect we also will land the very celebrated #1, Lucy Li of nearby Redwood Shores.  Given Li's intelligence and precocity, I wonder if her parents, who have had Lucy home-schooled, will opt to have her begin college in 2019 instead.

As a semi-foonote, I'd be surprised if we lost Lee or Valenzuela to the pros.  Neither are playing at an it's-time-to-go level and both appear to come from families who will push for graduation.

So next year's likely lineup:
1.  Andrea Lee, Jr.
2.  Ziyi Wang. Soph.
3.  Albane Valenzuela, Jr.
4.  Mika Liu, Soph.
5.  Calista Reyes, Fr.

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - slide - 05-16-2018

Hulk, there has been some discussion for years about a second course, but I am not sure how far along it progressed (may be an environmental impact assessment?).

Stanford, like others, has been adversely impacted by technology.  in the balata/persimmon days, a hole like #9 was a 1-iron/wedge type hole (playing safe away from the creek).  now kids tee it and go for the green (365 from the back).  what dogleg?  what creek?

there are ways to mitigate the trend selectively in tournaments -- rough, firm up the greens etc -- but Stanford really doesn't want to do that for membership and maintenance reasons ($).

on low scores, sometimes you just get hot.  -9 on 9 holes is not unheard of.

anyway, good on campus course, that is a plus.  could another modern course be added, yes imo.

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - CornFed - 05-16-2018

I presume the renovations being done are quite extensive.  During a recent trip to the Bay Area I was told that the entire course was closed.  Does anyone know any details?  I totally love the course and would be really excited if they were lengthening it to address the issues noted by Hulk01.  However, I don't know if there is space available to do that effectively.  A second course could be a very exciting prospect if it came about.

Imagine playing in Oregon high school golf back then, meaning from the end of March to beginning of June.  Hitting it at sea level into cool damp marine air over and into  rain-dampened fairways (drives did not roll until after July 4) with a dinky-headed persimmon driver hitting a balata ball.  We had a 255- yard par four that no one ever reached--and that was from a group that produced one golf All American, another who played in the NCAA championships, and a third who in high school scored better than both of them.  Totally different game.

The story for me is, can LSU catch TCU?  LSU just went nuts on 4 and 5, neither of them birdie holes--and six is one.  They want to make up two more shots on that hole.  And if they do, it's another hint that they're hot.

We're in very good shape.  We wanted to go -2 over the first five and bettered that.  If we can get get past 17 with a couple pars and no doubles, we're in even better shape.

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - BigEasyCard - 05-16-2018

Cardinal start strong with -5 so far today, now in third place and eight strokes ahead of sixth place Colorado.

Geaux Cardinal!

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - slide - 05-16-2018

work on irrigation, new grasses for roughs and bunkers.  also some tree removals and tree plantings.  details attached in link below.

Cardinal with -8 so far today, still in third place and now twelve strokes ahead of surging sixth place LSU.  Isaiah Salinda is at -4 for today through 10.

Geaux Cardinal!

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - Spiny_Norman - 05-16-2018

A cautionary tale of why you never feel comfortable until the last player finishes.

Pepperdine was well above the cut line in Norman until the team collapsed on the final 4 holes. They collectively went 9 over on those 4 holes including a double bogey on the final hole by one of their top players. It appears that they will miss out by 2 shots.

And in a brobdingnagian surprise from Raleigh, 4th ranked Georgia Tech is out.  Their #1 player made bogey on the final hole while ASU's #2 player made a birdie. Georgia Tech missed the cut line by one shot. ASU made it by one shot.

Back in Stockton, LSU as expected is making a late run.  They are 3 shots behind Oregon as the teams are making the turn.  Oregon is riding on the back of Ryan Gronlund who shot 7 under 29 on the back side.

Stanford has dropped some shots and is creeping back towards the cut line. They are currently in 4th place, 5 shots clear of Oregon and 8 shots ahead of 6th place LSU.

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - ColoradoTree - 05-16-2018

Spiny, we're -19 and 13 strokes ahead of 6th-place LSU, with just Wu's 18th remaining.  (Swegle's, too, but his score won't count today.)  Am I allowed to feel comfortable yet?

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - Spiny_Norman - 05-16-2018

Indeed, CT. Stanford is beyond reach of the woofing gods at this point unless 2 of its players sign incorrect scorecards.

Fantastic play by the entire team today. 4 players under par. Wu and Xiong from Oregon played together and nearly matched each other birdie for birdie as they fought for the individual medal. Xiong pulled it out with 3 straight birdies on his 15th, 16th and 17th holes. Special recognition for Snyder playing in his 1st regional and closing with a 69.  That's solid work.

Oregon rode the backs of Gronlund and Xiong, both shooting 66, to lock out 2015 champ LSU. So three of the top 10 teams did not make it out of regionals - #4 Georgia Tech, #6 LSU and #9 C.al.

Making the field from the P12 - Stanford, Arizona State, UCLA and Oregon which won in 2016 and was runner-up last year.

At -11, the team had the best round of the day, 3 ahead of Oregon. That's playing well when it counts.

Thanks, slide.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the course is being lengthened.  At one time the Stanford Golf Course was rated as the 7th best course in California (which was saying something, indeed).  The layout has been obsolesced by developments in the golf industry more than almost any course with which I am intimately familiar.  It is a shame.

RE: NCAA Men's Golf Regional - slide - 05-16-2018

cornfed -- I didn't see any lengthening in the document either.  I am not sure how much room there really is to do so.  on relatively inexpensive changes, may be use the putting green as the new first tee box.  you could add some more yards on 7 & 8; plus 11 & 12.  still not the several hundred yards needed.

on impacts on traditional top-ranked courses, Cypress also has been hit hard in the same way.  still a great great track with unreal visuals.

lastly great close today for the Cardinal.  I hope they keep momentum up through Stillwater.

Terrific finish for our guys! Thanks to all of your for the helpful commentary and updates. And while UCLA is our chief competition this year for NCAA titles and likely for Directors Cup points, it always feels good to see the Toejams on the wrong side of the cut line!

The only hesitation I have is that Wu provided us with -14 by himself. Our other four players' final scores across three rounds were -1, +1, +1, and +2. If this is supposed to be an easy course, we should see lower scores than that. We're lucky Wu got and stayed as hot as he did over the three days.

Re: Stanford Golf Course renovations - coincidentally, a friend sent me a pdf document from the most recent town hall progress report last week. I can send privately to anyone. It's about 5MB which exceeds the size limit for attachments here.  It includes before and after photos of the most visible bunker changes. Just message me your email if interested.

I did not find a report online of the May town hall meeting. This url has a summary from the March town hall.

The key to a good performance in this format is rounds in the 60s. Most players at this level are going to be somewhere between -2 and +4 each round. But the teams that win have one or two guys go -3 or better each round. We had 5 such rounds in this regional (out of 15 possibilities). Kansas, who beat us by a single stroke, also had 5 out of 15. Third place had 4 out of 15 in the 60s. It only takes one or two guys each round, and it doesn't matter who. That has been our downfall in the NCAA Championship the last few years - no rounds in the 60s (and no really bad rounds either). If you want to be in the hunt, one or two guys in the 60s each day...
