The game was part of the “Facebook Series” mid-week day games available exclusively through Facebook. I missed it as well since I do not use Facebook.   Since streaming is the future of sports “telecasts”, I guess we might as well get used to it.    ugghh...

MLB should re-think its association with Facebook. Aligning with a company that spies on its customers without their knowledge and gives their data to foreign adversaries, isn't a brand MLB should want associated with it. And LOL at the ridiculous Facebook ad campaign running right now.

I’ve used mlb.com for several years now. It’s great except it blacks out local games. So if I’m traveling and the Giants are in that town, unless it’s on local TV I’m out of luck.

RE: The Giants - BobK - 06-09-2018

Giants now one game over 500.  Just sayin

RE: The Giants - Phogge - 06-09-2018

Time to sever Jackson and Gearrin. Bring zip to the table. Swallow Jackson’s salary.

RE: The Giants - qwerty49 - 06-09-2018

Wasted opportunities today.  Craw got the day off today but they needed him to PH in the 7th with 2 out, runners on 2nd and 3rd, down 6-5. This was after Williamson whiffed with 1 out.  Craw had his avg up to .327 but he whiffed too.

Then Gearrin gave up another run.

Then in the 8th they once again had 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, but McCutchen popped out.

RE: The Giants - Phogge - 06-10-2018

Thinking ahead if the race remains tight into late July and they still need another starter (which is the biggest need right now) how about dealing Longoria. Strikes out way too much for what he does. Older and not the same player he once was and they can move Hanson to third. Starters’ ERA atrocious. Some AL club may do the deal.

Interesting point Phogge.

Longoria, Williamson and Pence are kind of a black hole in what should be a potent offense.

Crawford OTOH must have sold his soul to Old Scratch. 4 for 4 today including the 2-run big fly that beats Scherzer. Dude is hitting above .500 since June 1. .338 overall.

I like what I’ve seen of Hansen.

Cueto and Shark should be back this month. Some interesting decisions coming.

RE: The Giants - BobK - 06-10-2018

Oh now there’s a race says Phogge.  Love it

RE: The Giants - OutsiderFan - 06-10-2018

OK, who had Giants 2 Nats 0 when they saw Holland vs. Scherzer? I guess this is why they play the games!

Crawford is reminding me of Ryne Sandberg from back in the day. The dude notoriously hit poorly in April and May, but then he'd heat up in the Summer.  It's quite amazing to see a career .250-ish hitter at .338 on June 10.

The real story for the Giants is the bullpen.  Of course Holland was able to eke out 5 scoreless innings today, but it was four relievers - including what looks like finally a healthy Melancon - who each contributed a shutout inning to the cause.  The Giants' bullpen is looking very, very good.

Smith, Watson, Moronta, Dyson, Melancon, and Strickland are all sporting 2.25 or lower ERA and WHIP under 1.10. That's six guys dealing out of the pen. Blach will be a decent long guy, and Gearrin, well every team needs a guy to go in when the score isn't close to eat innings so the best guys get rest.

Still, the Giants are only 33-32 (the only team in MLB over .500 that has been outscored this season). They play a 4-game set against the Marlins and then are at Dodgers next weekend. The reality seems to be if the Giants fall behind the Dodgers, they aren't gonna make the playoffs because it doesn't look like any Wild Card team is coming from the NL West.

The Giants are on the hook for a net $61.5 million from 2019 through 2022 (incl. a 2023 buyout less what Tampa has agreed to pay).  No one will take on that kind of salary in return for a quality starter.  The Giants would have to ship a star minor league prospect to get someone to accept EL’s contract.

Nope.  SF will have to live with the deal.

RE: The Giants - Phogge - 06-10-2018

All about balls. The Sox had stones when they dumped Pablo. Baer never has grown a set. Don’t tell me the Giants can’t afford it. They print money down there in the Production Ghetto.

And Bobb, there is a race because they are all crappy. Stay on the Yellow Brick Road old friend.

RE: The Giants - BobK - 06-11-2018

That road is my road.  Always the optimist

If Drugger could back up Hernandez I’d dump Jackson.

RE: The Giants - barrister7 - 06-11-2018

I agree about Jackson.  Of course, the Giants certainly did not envision Hernandez blossoming as he has this year.  I would bring up
Duggar and eat Jackson's unearned salary.  I also think about Slater who is burning up AAA at this time.  It would appear that Mac has
lost the power he displayed earlier in the season and has not since he slid into the boards.  In addition, the overpaid Pence is a shadow
of his former self.

Unless one or more of them go crazy, I would keep Duggar, Slater and Shaw in Sacto.  Let them continue to develop as a group.  Duggar still needs to work on reducing his strikeouts, Shaw on his fielding and Slater on bringing a more consistent approach to his game.  Next year, I could see all three of them starting in the OF for the Giants.  Meanwhile, SF is ok in the outfield.  The key to this season is Cueto and Shark pitching effectively.  If they both return to the form that earned them big contracts, the Giants have a good chance to make the playoffs.  And, of course, if that happens, anything is possible.

Like Bob K., I am an incorrigible optimist..
.

RE: The Giants - qwerty49 - 06-11-2018

Well, we won with Cody Ross and Pat Burrell. It remains to be seen if we can do the same with McCutchen, Pence and Longoria.

RE: The Giants - Phogge - 06-11-2018

Burrell’s homer off the obnoxious Dodger reliever one of the all time SF Giant moments. And they probably don’t win the LCS without Ross.

RE: The Giants - barrister7 - 06-11-2018

McCutchen, Pence and Longoria are a HELL of a lot more expensive than Burrell and Ross.  But with those contracts, what does one do
but just cowboy it up and go on with the program.

RE: The Giants - Mick - 06-11-2018

Let's not forget that the Giants are currently tied for first with Boston in all of MLB in hitting at .264.  We are seventh in OPS and 19th in runs scored, which makes me think that more runs are around the corner when our older statesmen - which is all of them - start to really heat up, not just Crawford and Posey.

RE: The Giants - OutsiderFan - 06-12-2018

The Giants are going to be pretenders if they don't win Bumgarner starts. They are now 0-2 with him starting. Can't be losing a series at arguably the worst team in the National League right after getting over the .500 mark. They totally piss away the Nationals series if they don't win the Marlins series, which now requires winning three in a row.

That batting average and OPS stat is totally wiped out when you have the worst road record in the NL, which the Giants effectively have now.

One day after I crow about the bullpen, it melts down and allows 3 ER in 3+ innings.

Nothing to this date in the season has changed my opinion that the Giants should trade Bumgarner for a haul of top prospects.
