All right now!

It is a miracle that we are leading this game. Irwin is the man.

No question: The Safety was the turning point, and then the poach by Irwin.
Total yards: STAN 156, SDSU 140. 9 - 7 at half.

We can pass the ball. Let's just keep doing it until they back off the line, then unleash Love!
Although, people viewing at home, is he 100%? It seems like one of those should've gone for more yards...

16 - 7 Stanford. 3rd Quarter. We need to play some D and keep rolling on O. GO CARD!
Aztecs drive down and kick a FG. We can live with that. Just keep scoring. 16 - 10 Stanford.
TD JJAW!!
AND 2 POINT CONVERSION TO JJAW!!
HE'S ON FIRE

I'm really impressed Shaw went for it there. That's a spot where going for it is demonstrably better but most coaches will kick anyway. I hope we see more of that.
Also, holy crap JJAW! Twenty points scored!

Pretty quiet around here.
That Fansville Dr. Pepper commercial is pretty funny.
Nice stop by our D on 4th down. Excellent. We needed that. Now let's finish these guys.

Paulson Adebo has been making a statement tonight. He is all over the place!

Another Costello TD pass!

It's nice Shaw is letting Costello carry the team here. In the past, he's sometimes been reluctant to let the QB shred the defense again and again when the box is stacked. (This reluctance nearly cost Stanford the 2015 ND game, for example.)
RE: SDSU Game Thread -

Well, this is nearly the opposite results from what I thought would happen. Defense is stout. Offense is, well, getting better but is almost entirely aerial. Bryce Love is a non-factor. So much for my future as a football savant.
Quietest game thread I can ever remember. Hope everyone is having a great holiday.
GO Card!!!

Don't have a problem with an entirely aerial offense. Sure you'd rather impose the will and march down the field while bleeding clock. But if the opposing defense wants to sell out with run blitzes, you're kind of obliged to pass time and again.

Good point. In the past, when the run didn't work he just kept running the ball. He's using all weapons. SDSU is ridiculously stacking the box and stunting. It would be crazy to keep running into that. I feel bad for BL, but this is what we should expect this season from opponent defenses. Good to see Costello can make them pay.

Costello's accuracy was a bit wonky at times but the receiving corps is so good it doesn't matter. And his pocket movement is exquisite.
Despite the score and yards per play allowed (5.05), I felt the defense left a certain something to be desired. Maybe when Holder and others come back we'll see better. Anyway I was impressed by debutants Paulson Adebo and Thomas Booker. The line still looks questionable to me though.

Absolutely agree that Costello wasn't razor sharp. JJAW catches anything near him. Teams are going to HAVE to double him. Then BL will go off!.

While this game didn't play out like many of us thought it would, there are some very positive take aways. First, we only had 3 penalties for 20 yards. Second, our defense stepped up and some previously unheralded players stood out. Third, Costello completed 68% of his passes for 320 yards and 4 TDs. Finally, JJAW continued to impress and had the 3rd best receiving yard game in Stanford history. Think of all the great receivers that have played for Stanford when you consider the significance of this feat.
We should feel very good about this game and the prospects for this season.

Touch wood, but this is the best I’ve felt about the team after the first game of the season in many years. I saw positive things from every part of our game save the run game, and I’m not too worried about that...

Not feeling all that great. It took two and a half quarters to realize the Aztecs we're selling out to stop the run. Still, how many play action passes did we call? As much as I want to see Love do really well, I was pleading with the TV for us to throw the ball. Every play.
Aside from the one drive, the D played great. Adepo (sp?) played lights out and was a surprise. . . .
Congrats on the win, but. . . .

The other significant variable here: injuries. It strikes me as an unusually long list of guys who are out: Burkett, Holder, and Antoine are all starters or close to it. Robinson and Perez are probably important depth. Simmons is a special teams star and probably also depth at safety. So we didn't see a full-strength team. Hopefully, we do in the future.
