While much of Herbert's great stats last year were a function of sub-par defenses faced, it's a little hard to be that specific.
Last year Herbert faced two P5 teams with winning records, UA and ASU. He played rather well in those games, going a combined 33-56, 516 yds, 4 TD, 1 INT. PER = 156.
On the other hand, neither of those teams were defensive jugernauts.

Oregon's first 3 games are vs. Bowling Green, Portland State, San Jose State. I don't think we will learn anything much about how good they are (or are not) until they play Stanford in three weeks.

In general, Dylan looked poised and effective, even against a pretty ferocious ND pass rush. Patterson will no doubt remain the starter, but Dylan looks like he has a shot to overtake Patterson at some point this year.
I think I read somewhere that Dylan was third string until the second stringer got hurt so wasn’t really prepared rep-wise.

Pat Forde says this could be the beginning of the end for Harbaugh. (“Harbaughcle”)

The Wolverine fans have every reason to be restless. Michigan has lost 17 consecutive road games to ranked opponents going back to 2006, one of the longest such streaks in the nation. And has lost 13 of 14 to Ohio State.  They are playing more like Illinois or Indiana than the winningest team in NCAA history.

I can buy that Herbert played well in Eugene vs Arizona, but let’s remember that the Wildcats finished 7-6, hardly world beaters. Not buying that he played well in a loss vs Arizona State, where his QBR was  59.7. So we have one game where he played well against one P5 opponent that finished 7-6 on the season. I also saw him vs Boise State in the Vegas Bowl and he was awful.

In defense of Oregon beginning the season with 3 cupcakes, they initially had Texas A&M slated to play a home and away starting this year, but A&M backed out in '14 when they decided to move to the SEC.  I wouldn't know this but was told it was the case needling a Oregon buddy while we watched the Bowling Green game.

IMHO, this many "warm up games" hurts a program, not only in terms of ranking, but in removing the opportunities for in game adjustments that adversity provides.  But if Stanford and Oregon are both at full strength and somehow undefeated (well Stanford at least), it will be interesting to see how prepared the Ducks are mentally to battle with the Cardinal after mowing down the short grass.

To Oregon's credit, they play Auburn next year and Ohio State the year after.
