My, my. I think our past success has made us a little impatient here. Seems like, barring clear sustained significant movement in the wrong direction, a new coach should be able to coach at least one year with a team comprised of all his own recruits before making any final judgments (which for Haase will be his 5th year). Could this be part of why a minimum 5-year contract is standard? Even by that standard, Montgomery would have been gone long before he was notably successful.
This year Haase is coaching with only two classes he's recruited, and one of the classes is raw freshmen. C'mon. Let the process unfold.

I doubt a second coming of Monty would have survived being here after Monty's track record.
Yes, his success jaded us. But I'm not talking about expecting a team that is in the top 3 in the conference and make the tournament every year.
Haase was promoted as being better than Dawkins. So far all I see are Dawkins-esque records and the lineup this year doesn't look on paper to be capable of much better than that - NIT or NCAA high seed at best.
I said I'd give him another year after this. But if he can't put a team in the dance by next season he needs to go - and he may leave on his own if he can't anyway, throwing in the towel. As for Muir, he's made a few clunker hires and I think he gave Dawkins 3 more years than he deserved, but the majority of sports have top notch coaching and - equally important from a University standpoint - the department is financially solvent on its own unlike many other schools. Muir's not going anywhere, for better or for worse.

I don't know...
Let me be clear that I don't think Haase should be fired, now or in the near future. That being said, we fired Buddy Teevens after three seasons, even though he didn't have his own recruits, and we fired Wlat after two years. I'm not sure you need to wait five years to make a change.

Yeah, I don't think anyone's calling for Haase to be fired. I will confess to feeling slightly befuddled by him. His process seems sound. I like the way he approaches the job. But the results, thus far, have not been better than Dawkins's. (And Dawkins I considered a truly poor coach.)
I don't want to make it seem as if I'm demanding Haase be the second coming of Montgomery or whatever... but I feel like a good coach should've elevated the team more.

The best way for Stanford men's hoops to improve its record is improving the team's recently tragic FT shooting.

+1. And the women too. There's some sort of epidemic that's taken hold among our teams when they step up to the line!

I think Haase has been a clear improvement over JDawk. The records may be similar, but the JDawk teams were unbearable to watch at times. With Haase, I see a team that is entertaining and the players seem to be enjoying the experience.
I think recruiting has been going very well. 3 of the 4 frosh last year played crucial roles and are the foundation of this year. 2 more incoming frosh may also be key pieces. Keep adding 2 contributors each year, and soon you will have a deep team that can consistently get to the post season.
I like the trajectory of the program...although I do wish we were a sure bet to be dancing every year.

The reason we're not excited is because Dawkins recruited pretty poorly in his final two years at the Farm, which is why we have no notable upperclassmen.
That's not quite how I would describe the situation.
First off, by now it has been some time since Dawkins. His second to last class would all be fifth years were they around.
His last class was down a notch, but the player rankings weren't bad. Considerable not panning out there, for whatever reason.
Haase's first year was a little rough - with only Pugh and Stanback - though it's always tough to recruit through a transition.
Overall, Stanford basketball recruiting seems to have been better than Stanford basketball performance for some time now - at least if you believe the recruiting services.
Both Pugh and Stanback committed to Stanford under Dawkins and stuck with their commitments after his post-season firing. Haase had basically zero time to recruit between his hiring and signing day. Dawkins' "final two years at the Farm" were thus 2014-15 and 2015-16, and both of these seasons' recruiting classes were poor by Dawkins' standards. There has been "considerable not panning out" for essentially every single member of both classes, considering they were all in the top 150 recruits in the nation...
2016 - class rank #56 national, #9 Pac 12
Pugh: #94
Stanback: #110
You also have to consider we never saw the real Cartwright as his career was severely impeded by that awful injury, out of the next group Walker retired, and Sheffield has been hurt most of his career and other than a few flashes hasn't contributed. This year will be a completely different team in terms of style and tempo. From everything I can glean, they want to push the ball, no more waiting for a big to establish himself on the low post, more pressure defensively using the length and athleticism to try and force turnovers and go the other way. Sort of doing to others what was so often done to us in the past.
Davis has made it clear he thinks his turn over issues are solved. Biggest unknown is obviously rebounding. Haase' comments make it pretty clear everybody has to rebound, and he doesn't sound sure like he thinks the issue is solved. I do think he feels we will force more turn overs this year. If that is true, it may help offset some of the missing rebounds. I don't foresee that we will be what used to pass for Stanford normal, rebound, walk the ball down the court and setup the half court game. That style just doesn't fit our guys now.

First Cardboard post. As a long-time Stanford fan the last decade has been painful.
That said Coach Haase is a clear upgrade over the Duke sleeper agent and his 8 year mission to destroy Stanford basketball.
While I do not know if Coach Haase will be successful I believe he can be. He and his staff are superlative recruiters. They have filled scholarships spots that previous staffs would have held open. Look at the spring and summer signings (Davis, Wills, Delaire and Kisunas) that this staff has gotten and compare it to Dawkins. If Stanford has a spot in the spring they will be a real factor for Will Baker.
Dawkins could never land a serviceable point guard. Randle should have been his NBA PG but since Dawkins did not have a coherent offense he needed Randle to play hero ball in order to score. By contrast, Davis is a potential pro player and Terry is a top ten PG in his class.
Haase now needs a season where the bulk of his team stays healthy and they greatly improve their defense, rebounding and free throw shooting. Their offense will be better than expected, especially if they have 3-4 competent outsider shooters (Sheffield, Ryan, Da Silva, Davis).
I expect that Stanford will compete for an NCAA bid this season. Too many unknowns inside this year. The 2019-20 team has the makings of a sweet 16 type season, particularly if they can get a front court talent like Will Baker.

Thanks for the post, and welcome! I too am cautiously optimistic about this season, more optimistic for the next.
Unsure how "on the inside" you are with respect to recruiting, but I was under the impression Haase was going after Aidan Igiehon as the big. Perhaps both, to land 1?

Igiehon is off the board last I read.

No insider here but Aidan Igiehon has eliminated Stanford. Surprising given his profile (Irish, Good prep school) and his lip service to academics. It may be that Stanford cannot sign him in the Fall and asked him to wait until Spring.

Missed that re: Igiehon. Bummer. But man Will Baker seems like a beast; he would be an epic get for sure.
