RE: depth chart - JPR36 - 10-24-2018

Unfortunately, we only really get to see the outcome: whether a player is injured or not.  While an oft injured player may have a predisposition to it, that player may also just have bad luck.  Hard to know what would have happened to, say, Costello, had he been involved in the same plays that injured Mills.

BC

Mills initially injured his knee in a non football related incident and then re injured it when it buckled under him when he took a hard hit to his upper body. His latest injury does not appear to have been caused by anything specific.  This makes me a little suspicious that there is some anatomic problem that just isn't going to go away.

Jack West better be able to play.

I love the name.  It reminds me of two characters that I enjoyed watching -- Jim West and Jack Webb.

RE: depth chart - OutsiderFan - 10-25-2018

Mills sure does fit the profile of someone who transfers, so has to be considered a possibility.

He isn't playing next season as a RS Soph. He may not after that as a RS Junior if Costello returns for his 4th year. This would mean Mills wouldn't get a shot at starting until his RS Senior season.  By then, West, McKee, and maybe the 2020 recruit will be pushing to play.

The other factor is just getting away from Stanford in the "maybe new scenery will change his fortunes" kind of way.

I don't know anything about the Mills health situation to really understand what is going on, but maybe sitting out a year to get healthy as a transfer - without giving up a year of eligibility to do so - would benefit him and his football career prospects.

Outsider let me just say I think you are soooo very wrong.
Wish I could add a big nice smiley face ?

Mills has a FULL RIDE to Stanford -- STANFORD! -- no way he transfers, until he graduates.  If then.

Especially if he's got a bum knee, he's wise to make that 40-year decision.

I'd be happy to be wrong, but Mills is a mystery wrapped up in an enigma for fans like myself.  I've never been aware of any situation quite like his before, in part because there has been no reporting on him hardly at all.

When you say I'm wrong, Bob, what specifically am I wrong about?

Costello playing two more seasons?
Mills not only expected back to 100% health, but expected to overtake Costello?
Mills not transferring because he's too injured to ever be healthy enough to play again, and wants Stanford degree?

RE: depth chart - BobK - 10-25-2018

Or your words my friend, Mills does NOT fit the profile.

This does nothing to clear up how and why Mills won't be a transfer possibility.

I provided three separate options for why he shouldn't be considered one and none have been confirmed or denied.

I don't have a tape of the play in question anymore (just under 6:00 remaining vs Davis, second and 8 from the UCD 23). My memory is that he took a hard hit at the sideline and either buckled weirdly to the side or buckled over-top of another body on the ground.

Does anyone have a more specific memory?
Or even better know of a web-available video?

I think that the apparent fragility of his knee should convince him the last thing he wants to do is pass up a chance to get a Stanford degree.
Once he has it, if his knee is holding up and it doesn't look like he is going to be designated the starter then perhaps he should consider a transfer to make best use of whatever eligibility he has remaining.

This does make sense. Unfortunately, it still paints a picture that it is more likely that Mills won't ever be a full-season starting QB at Stanford than it is.  Just never heard of any recent athlete being so debilitated by a knee injury that I'm not sure has ever been publicly reported to have been an ACL tear or other major knee problem.  Hell, even Navorro Bowman came back from a gruesome knee injury seemingly worse than Mills has had, and returned to a Pro Bowl performance level for a little while.

Just sucks, as Mills was the QB recruit it seemed Stanford fans were most optimistic about being great, since Andrew Luck.

Hey, I agree, it really does suck.
When we signed Mills I thought we had a future superstar in the fold.
What is really strange is after the initial injury in HS he made a quick recovery and played most of his senior season. When he re injured the knee in the state championship game he said it wasn't a big deal and holding him out of the rest of the game was just precautionary. Here we are nearly two years later and he is still trying to recover from it, having re injured it twice since then.

I think St. Brown looks very promising, but he has only caught 6 passes on the year so far.

He seems to have a knack for getting open deep. However, watching those routes it appears that some of that knack comes from the DBs thinking we're not going to throw to him so are cheating off and looking for a play going elsewhere. ly, as it tends to get rid of any yards gained after the catch, but I sometimes wonder if that has become too ingrained into Costello right now.

Shaw has a way of working first-year players into the rotation with just a few key plays where they're targeted and meant to execute really well.  Before these players become notable, this is a workable strategy without being too obvious. In St. Brown's case, his plays seem to be the bubble screen (as a substitute for Wedington, and along with Michael Wilson) and the deep post or fly. We're not bothering with much else for him, other than boxing out the DB on running plays where he's often the lone wideout. We can also run play action to him in these running formations.

On his first target at ASU, he was lined up wide, a few yards off the LOS, with another receiver nearby in the slot at the LOS.  I declared to my ASU-grad colleague at the game that it was going to him, and it was either a bubble-screen or a bomb.  It had all the hallmarks of a bubble screen, but instead he went deep and drew the PI call. A DB looking to blow-up the bubble screen and experiencing St. Brown's speed for the first time could easily be beaten on this play. When we came back to St. Brown a bit later, we actually did run the bubble screen to him (if memory serves) for -3 yards, but I think ASU knew we were turtling by then.

It's on film now, but I wouldn't be surprised if we try to pull off the bubble-screen fake to him again in the coming weeks. It's one thing to kind of know it might be coming, and another to try to keep up with the guy for the first time after over-respecting the bubble and under-respecting his speed.

RE: depth chart - Phogge - 10-26-2018

It may not matter. Of course Bobbbbbbbbbb is getting in Shaw’s head about his quarter miler QB who will act like Newton/Griffin/Mayfield and lead Stanford into the Promised Land.

Then they won’t need Mills/West/McKee/Butterfield and Shaw will be liberated from the past.

Mortal lock.

Even asking questions leads to speculation, absent available answers.

In this particular case, nobody here seems to know anything about Mills. Even Bob can only say "he's not transferring." But that does nothing to answer his health situation, or whether he can or should be expected to one day be a full-season starting QB for Stanford.  It's exceptionally strange that someone who was considered such a prized recruit would be the subject of so little reportage, unless there has a been some that I have missed. So absent information, as a fan, I will speculate, in hopes of getting corroboration or some clarity on a murky situation.
