The NCAA changed their foul terminology last year to be more similar to FIBA (international) rules instead of NBA rules. So what we're used to calling a "flagrant 1" foul is now an "unsportsmanlike" foul.
I couldn't see what happened from my seat, and the video review was super long, so I didn't trust our least favorite ref on this call. Good to hear from those who could see that it was more or less correct.

I did notice Kiana returned to the bench at some point during the 2nd half, and she was moving around well during a stoppage when she came to congratulate the players coming off the court. I meant to post about that but didn't have a chance right then.

I watched the press conference which had a few interesting nuggets. Tara was clearly pleased about many things, but she noted turnovers and poor shooting as areas for improvement. She particularly praised Alanna's free throws--deservedly, as well as Maya's defense on Morgan. As for all those turnovers, she noted that they were in part due to Davis knowing our offense so well, but she also said that our players need to do a better job of reading the defense.
That last point struck me as critical. For the Princeton to function well against really good teams (think Baylor coming up) we can't rely on our physical superiority, we need to force the defense to commit and then make quick reads to attack accordingly. The ability to make those reads faster than the defense can react will determine our success against anyone playing man defense against us.
For example, we seemed to have several turnovers when someone was running the baseline toward the basket and then passed cross court into an interception. And a couple of charging fouls when someone running the baseline toward the basket didn't pass and collided with a defender. I don't know the offense well enough to know what should have been done--but my guess is there was supposed to be a pass to an open perimeter player or to someone cutting from a different angle. That read has to be made instantly--you can't stop and think about where to pass it. And I imagine we will get better and better at making those kinds of reads.

OK, good to hear. It sounds like a superficial injury (in the literal sense - no serious fractures or concussions).
And I could totally see Tara keeping Brown in at the point for the final half if we had a big lead and we want her to get up to speed ASAP. And no need to sub Williams back in at the 2 once our bench was getting serious court time.
I worry about Carrington. Anyone know if she's been out or had any injuries over the summer? Unlike last year, I don't remember hearing about anyone being injured but for Sniezek.

In the exhibition Carrington had two knee braces and some kind of compression stockings on her legs. Last night she had one brace and the compression stockings. I thought it might be preventative given her past history of knee injuries, but I don't know. Lindy said in the Chalk Talk that everyone was healthy, other than Marta.
Carrington has often been a streaky shooter, as has Wilson. They both are capable of getting hot and when they are they seem absolutely terrific, but neither has been altogether consistent.

Some additional thoughts from the game:
Kiana - Carried the team offensively in the first half. Was very impressed by her leadership. Kind of reminded me of senior year Karlie Samuelson i.e. when the team could not score, Kiana wasn't fazed and seemed to have the mentality of don't worry, get me the ball and I'll knock down some big momentum changing threes
Alanna - Struggled with fouls, seemed to be frustrated most of the game. But still led the team in scoring with a ridiculous point per minute (16 pts in 15 minutes)
Maya - Really great to see a strong game from Maya, had some nice drives from the high post for tough layups. Mostly impressed by her defense. She got lost sometimes on defense during her freshman year but played well against a constantly shifting princeton offense. And I think she did a great job guarding Bertsch. Yes it was a team effort on Bertsch but Maya's shot-blocking is pretty darn intimidating for an opposing post.
Lexie - Struggled a bit (missed some layups and slipped/ turned the ball over) but still a very impressive debut for a freshman. Double double in her first college game and I think she is only going to get better. Is the definition of college-ready. I think her best quality is her high motor and competitiveness.
Jenna - I liked what I saw. Yes she only scored twice but they were the kind of baskets that we had none of last year, namely driving into the lane, no pass is available, so point guard has to take the teardrop or short jumper. Last year we drove into the lane and if there was no layup or pass, we would likely force a pass and turn the ball over. Plus she had a very nice layup through contact that was called an offensive foul (but seemed more like a blocking foul to me)

Carrington is fine. I gather all preventive.
2 ACLs in the past in HS.
Does t seem to slow her down but 0 for 6 sure isn’t good

Maya: Best game at Stanford that I've seen (which is almost all home games). Against the smaller Aggies her athleticism was enough to get some great rebounds, but I still worry that her blocking out is not great yet. Still, it was a very good game for her with some nice low post moves and put-backs.
Lexie (and Lacie): It is great to have that length, quickness and hustle on the team. We will win more races to long rebounds, etc. If the outside shooting becomes reliable, watch out.
Jenna: I'd add that she had one very nice drive and dish for an assist on a layup and one pull-up 5 foot jumper, a great shot for a point guard to have. Her ball-handling was a bit ragged at times but I saw a burst of speed that could make her really special. A couple of times she just blew past a defender trying to pester her as she brought the ball up.
