IMO,
Helton won the Rose Bowl two years ago and was the Pac-12 champ last year. To call him a dud because he had a bad year this year is an overstatement.
If I'm an AD, I don't think Wilcox has accomplished enough at Kal to get me all hot and tingly about hiring him away from there. Let him win the Pac-12, or at least make it to the CC game before we start considering him the next great college football head coach.
Also, Wlicox has created a "small miracle" at Kal? He is 3-4 in conference play and his three non conference wins were against undistinguished teams. Is that a serious statement? If it is, that's setting the bar awfully low.

Agreed.  If I were Wilcox, i'd get out while the getting's good.  He's had a fairly fortunate year.  If C.al manages to beat Stanford, I'd take whatever offer I could get, were I he.

Well, I think he will beat Colorado, and if he can get by Stanford that makes him 8-4. Heck, that was good enough to get Denny Green an NFL head coaching gig. So maybe he should see what is out there. My guess is that also gets him an nice salary bump and a contract extension at Kal, for whatever that is worth.

Didn't Mariucci last a mere one year at kal with a middling record, only to be rewarded with an NFL head coaching gig?

Yes.  Went 6-5 with Ca.l in 1996, loss in the Aloha Bowl.  He started the season 5-0 with wins over SJSU, SDSU, Nevada, Oregon State and over #17 USC.  then lost 6 of 7, including 42-21 against the Cardinal.  Only win in that stretch was 56-55 over Arizona.  But his 6-6 team was sandwiched between two 3-8 teams, so I guess that meant he was a good coach.  He coached the Niners from 1997 to 2003, had four very good seasons and two bad ones.  Only got to one Championship game, his first year with Seifert's team.  His first draft pick was Jim Drukenmiller.  Young was his QB.  Jeff Garcia was his QB at the end.

The fear some here are showing of Wilcox and Cal is a little sad. Why not embrace him making Cal a legit contender? Can only help Stanford to have another team to knock off Oregon, Washington, and Washington State.  And don't you want the Big Game to actually be big for once, in terns of settling a division champion?

IMO, we didn't need any more legit contenders. We already shoot ourselves in the foot with the toughest schedule in the country on a yearly basis. Next year, we'll likely face the most difficult schedule in the history of college football with out-of-conference games against Notre Dame, UCF and Northwestern. Those teams are currently ranked #3, #8 and #20, respectively. Combined with 9 conference games, I can't imagine any team has ever navigated a gauntlet like that.

+1
I would rather have Cal be good than WSU, UW, or Oregon. While I don't think that is going to be a long-term trend, Wilcox or otherwise, I prefer it for the reason you mention.

OK, let Cal be good and WSU be bad. I am fine with that. Oregon can be bad too and it won't bother me a bit.
As far as next year goes, yes, it could be pretty hard. However, the year to year variation in NCAA football teams is pretty big. Who knows what we will really see from Notre Dame next year. Attrition due to graduation and going Pro early could really hurt them.

This claim would have a lot more merit if we were not in the Pac-12. While that is a really challenging out-of-conference slate (assuming those teams are this good next year), our in-conference games are obviously all Pac-12 teams (including Oregon State, Colorado, UCLA, and Arizona). Hard to claim the "most difficult schedule in the history of college football" when many consider the Pac-12 to be the weakest power 5 conference.

I'm glad that we don't play Utah next year.

I think wishful thinking would be for USC to keep Helton, no?  Wishful thinking would certainly be for Wilcox to be poached outside the conference, if we think Wilcox is a good coach (I would tend to agree) and if we want Cal to be weak (not sure).  If Wilcox is good enough that some Stanford fans don’t want him to stay on at Cal, the last place anyone should want him to go is USC.

RE: Wilcox to $C? - OutsiderFan - 11-19-2018

USC is highly unlikely to fire Helton.  His buyout is $20 million this year, and who know what his assistants will cost. They don't have a President currently.  And they face all kinds of lawsuit damages they must pay from what I gather.

If they were to can Helton now, it would cost north of $20 Million. A new coach that would be worthy would command at least $20 million, and probably more given what Jimbo got at Texas A&M.  Agents are going to say "USC is a bigger deal than Texas A&M, and you want my guy to take less than the Aggies paid for their coach?" And the agent will add "you guys have had 4 head coaches in last decade, so if you want my guy to take that risk you will need to pay up and that means front."

It doesn't stop there. USC would have to hire a successful coach from somewhere else, with a track record for winning. That would also carry a large buyout to pry said coach away. Buyouts these days can easily be $20 million for top coaches.

Maybe they could hire a Dino Babers. He would actually be affordable. But does USC want a coach who just got waxed by Notre Dame and couldn't win the division opposite Clemson?

Who's afraid? Just reading the tea leaves. If you saw UC play under Dykes then I would say that Wilcox has created a minor miracle. And I'm with OF, makes for better Big Game.

Plus my deceased cousin started on the Muncie team so I don't have the blind hatred of some around here.

Honest question: has a team ever played a regular season schedule that included 12 Power 5 caliber (I realize UCF isn't technically P5 but they haven't lost since 2016) opponents? I don't know how to research something like that, but I have to think the answer is no. Even SEC West teams almost always face an FCS cupcake every year.

Go to http://fbschedules.com for quick reference guide.

But I feel confident saying no SEC team has or ever will do that.

USC has probably come the closest to playing 12 real teams in a season, and 11 when only 11 games.

RE: Wilcox to $C? - BostonCard - 11-19-2018

Our current SOS is ranked #15 per S&P:

https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2018/8/29/17795292/college-football-2018-strength-of-schedule-week-12-rankings

Swap out Davis for UCF and SDSU for Northwestern and our schedule is almost certainly in the top 10.

Totally agree. While I probably give Helton a bit more slack than many here do, Wilcox could probably be an upgrade. USC has enough talent that a coach that can get it mostly on the same page most of the time can do very well. Helton probably isn't the guy to do that, at least semi-reliably. Wilcox could be. That said, I am not so sure Wilcox could/would navigate USC politics, which so far Helton has. Pete Carroll was a success at USC because he could get the players to play for him while keeping the rest of the University happy. It is not so easy to do either these days.

OK, if you think leading Kal to a 3-4 conference record is a "minor miracle" so be it.
So if they beat Colorado (probable) and Stanford (not impossible) will this (5-4) become a major miracle?
Hey, we are all entitled to our opinion.

I agree with you that a minor miracle has occurred. I am just not sure Wilcox caused it. He certainly helped, but it could be a combination of circumstances and not repeatable. Wilcox has fixed some of Cal's problems. However, I think Washington was real flat against Cal, and not that Cal played so well. USC is a bad team and the played particularly badly against Cal. Talk to me in two years and then I will tell you if Wilcox is the cause or just the beneficiary.
Earlier in the year, the Cal sites were calling for Wilcox's head. At the very least they wanted the OC executed. Even after things got a bit better, I was reading on the Cal web sites that they absolutely had to beat us and Colorado, because no way would they beat Washington and/or USC. Two unexpected wins and now Wilcox is a genius. I suspect that things don't actually work that way. To their credit, Cal maximized the opportunity UW and USC gave them. However, I don't think they created said opportunities.

I agree with you that a minor miracle has occurred....

Well, there is a miracle in just how the cal team has changed. It's become bizarro-cal.

In Dykes last year cal led the conference in offense at 513 yds/gm and were 10th nationally. But they were also 10th in the Pac in defense at 518 yds/gm, 125th nationally (of 128).

Right now, cal is 12th in the conference in offense at 364 yds/gm, 104th nationally. But they are also 3rd in the Pac in defense at 319 yds/gm, 18th nationally.

Cal has become ... 2014 Stanford?
