They mostly seemed to be playing zone, and we didn't really seem to know how to get inside it. And if we're going to pass our way around the perimeter to find an opening, we need to be passing a lot faster. We seemed really lethargic, and you could see a lot of our passes inside from a mile away for easy turnovers. I don't know if what we saw was the Princeton, but whatever it was, it was not very inspiring.
And biketoc, as bad as a 32-point offensive half is, I'd say giving up 43 on d was even worse. We're going to have an awful hard time winning a game where the other team is on pace to score 86 points...

Hard to win a game when you can't make wide open layups or free throws or three point shots.

Admittedly, no one thought we were in the ballpark of UConn or Notre Dame, but man, we feel light years away from the level of play in that game. We aren't passing crisply, don't seem to be playing with the kind of energy a team should have that's down double digits, and how can we have no one who will step up and make some baskets? This is dreadful.

The Princeton is used only against man defense. We've actually done better against the zone. But I'm seeing the Zags in a lot of man.
The third quarter was even worse. Our defense got a bit better but our offense collapses. A 9-15 quarter leading to a 41-58 deficit. All the worst tendencies on our team erupted at once. Alanna fouling, bad free throw shooting, Dijonai going cold, turnovers, etc.

Pretty sure I had to restart more times than Stanford has points.
Let's hope this is the "mega-stinky" game that all of the greatest seasons seem to have.

Hah. It might be that I've missed about 50% of it reloading the feed, and I eventually gave up given how ugly it was to watch. A few of our terrible turnovers were when the defense collapsed as we tried to get inside. What I don't understand is why we don't go to the hot hand. It seemed like Jerome had a few pretty treys and then she disappeared from most of the second quarter. And Lacie was one of the few players who seemed like she was playing with energy and trying to attack the basket. Meanwhile, Carrington keeps chucking things up that go nowhere. She didn't even make the fast break that was essentially undefended (notwithstanding the phantom foul call on Rice). And Williams seems really off today - not moving as swiftly, or trying to create offense. What a depressing showing.

What happened? We were way down, I lost the feed and had to keep reloading and now we are only down by what, 5?

Great effort on the comeback, but it was just too much to make up. Final 79-73. We got as close as 3, and in fact Lacie had a 3-point attempt that would have tied it at one point, but missed.

Great to see them not give up and fight back. Gonzaga is a good team, but our offense was non existent until the 4th quarter.

I agree the comeback effort was impressive. Hats off to Gonzaga who hit a lot of mid-range jumpers. Difference in the game was the brobdingnagian discrepancy in rebounding and free throw shooting. Seemed like the ball was slipping through our fingers on passes and rebounds for the first three quarters of the game. I think Lexie Hull and her rebounding could have made a difference.

The post mortem is done at the top.
Here are some depressing stats:
Rebounding, Stanford 24 Gonzaga 38.
Free throw shooting: Stanford 14/24, Gonzaga 19/22.
Three point percentage: Stanford 41%, Gonzaga 62%
If we rebounded as well as Gonzaga did instead of giving them 14 more chances we win this game. If we hit half of the free throws we missed we might have won too. If we kept Gonzaga's three point shooting down to our impressive 41% level we also win. If we do none of those things, and play as badly as we actually did for the first three quarters, why then we lose, and we deserve to.

I was busy and couldn't watch but sure sounds like not much went well. Getting out-rebounded like that and the poor defense are the scariest things. Those are effort and hustle to a large extent. Gonzaga is good but really, we have the talent to beat them, even on the road. Some of our key players struggled a lot, actually most of them did, by the stats. I hate to say this but maybe the optimism for the season was a bit premature. Team is young and should improve a bunch but by now the upperclassmen should be farther along.

Not going to lie - today was depressing. Switching between UConn-Notre Dame and our game against Gonzaga was like going from Texas varsity blues to Vermont junior varsity. They were playing at a totally different level. We have a long way to go before we are competitive with the top teams. And it wasn't just lack of energy, but the little things: finding mismatches, finishing in traffic, creating spacing, crisp passing, getting back on defense. Given the way that Baylor is thrashing South Carolina, I think it's extremely unlikely we'll keep this losing streak at one...

This was a bad first-half weekend for too many Stanford teams. (Unfortunately, WBB & WSOC were not the worst.)
Of course it is never good to lose. But if the pain and embarrassment of the loss can help Stanford win one (or both!) of its next two games, then we get a silver lining.
Unfortunately, the on-demand stream of the game ends 4 minutes after it starts, so I can't get a feel from watching the game.
Btw, the UConn-ND game ended as a very strong win for UConn. Late in the 2nd half, Gino appears to have interacted with a ND player, resulting in the player getting a technical. The official under the basket called a foul (properly) in UConn's favor. Immediately after the call, Geno stepped out onto the court to say something to the official as she walked by him. The camera cuts away from him, but isolates on him a little later. He is saying something to someone and gesticulates in a dismissive way twice. The announcer who is a former player suggested that he was complaining to an official, but when you look at his gaze, he certainly appears to be talking to the ND player., not to the official From an overhead view, you can see that Geno is standing with both feet partly in fair territory. The ND player starts in the same defensive position as her teammate on the other side. She then takes a couple of steps towards Geno, but still about 3 steps away from him. Geno steps out onto the court, not towards the ND player, with both feet completely in fair territory (ie, completely outside the coaching box) as the free throw is taken. The ND player steps towards the center of court (away from Geno), and the official a few feet from her calls a technical on her. Meanwhile one of Geno's assistants steps in front of Geno to back him down. Presumably, the official heard & saw everything.
I don't know what the call was. IIRC, a single free throw was awarded. My guess is that the call was that the ND player was disconcerting the free-thrower during the foul shot. (I don't think the ND player was complaining about Geno being on the court, but the official should have issued a warning to Geno, but improperly did not. This is among the Points of Emphasis and there is a whole section in appendix III in the rules on this. This is not a discretionary or judgement call.)

I think a good part of it is our inexperience--and missing our least experienced starter Lexie. Lexie showed early on that she could replace McPhee's points. We really need her to make our offense work this year. Gonzaga was playing Rice, Stockton, and Smith who are all seniors or redshirt seniors playing at home. We had Smith who was off the court as much as she was on. We are an extremely young team without a lot of experience playing in tough situations. We will get a lot better as the year wears on.
Defense and rebounding can be coached. And do they ever need to be.

I hope you are right and the main issue was a young team with a tough road game they were maybe not quite mentally ready for, for whatever reason. We are playing three reasonably experienced players in Smith, Carrington, and Fingall. All are upperclass players and all have played decent minutes, though not big minutes for the latter two. At this point in their careers I imagine most of us thought we'd see more from them, more consistent play. When they are on they are great but so far the consistency is not there. I don't get why we have struggled at times the last year and now this one with rebounding. We have the size inside, and the athletic ability, guards like Carrington and the Hulls rebound well, should be ok there.

Off topic here, but I didn't think it was worth its own thread. We play Baylor shortly, so this is relevant.
The Baylor coach, Kim Mulkey, had
surgery in August to fuse three vertebrae. She can no longer squat beside the court, nor do that stomp she used to do to emphasize something. At the So. Carolina venue, she was using a chair between the 28' and 38' lines. She was sitting some during the game, but also walking some.
While some of us may not appreciate her style of coaching, I'm sure we all wish her well in her healing.
Her team crushed South Carolina 94-69. This will be a challenging game for Stanford.
================
In other games today, the University of Texas lost badly to Mississippi State, 67-49.
As a UT alumnus (grad school), I am embarrassed to say that I noticed bad sportsmanship by the Texas athletic department. The Frank Irwin Center has a lighted marquee that goes around the entire stadium, including behind the baskets. The athletic department flickers those lights during an opponent's free throw attempt, but not during their own team's attempts. This is the second administrative-backed poor sportsmanship I've seen by Texas in the past few years (remember the cheerleaders using megaphones during opponent WVB serves - I believe public outcry stopped that).
Unfortunately, the WBB rules do not clearly preclude this. For music & band, the rules say it can be played during dead ball fouls. I'd like to see that rule apply to changing the lighting. If I were a ref, I'd probably give a warning that blinking that marquee constitutes violating the rule "The court should be uniformly and adequately lighted". Uniformly applies temporally as well as spatially. The second occurrence (in any game after that first warning) I'd rule an administrative technical foul.
