Everyone is way too overconfident about this game. Narduzzi, Pitt HC, was the DC for the Michigan State team that pretty much handled a Stanford offense in the Rose Bowl a few years back. Wait and see if Love, JJAW and/or Costello actually play.
And UW definitely has a chance against an Ohio State team that's not going to be especially motivated.

It's really hard to square Pitt being so dangerous with them being middle-of-the-road in the FBS per S&P, #41 per FEI, #51 per FPI, #50 Sagarin, etc.
The first spread up has us at -6.5, which seems low if anything (Sagarin and FPI would have it closer to 9).
I know in bowl games weird things can happen, but we really ought to win this soundly, especially if we get healthy over the next month.

This is particularly important to note. tOSU (wrongfully) thinks it belonged in the CFP. Could easily see them laying an egg. Same story for Wazzu - they (rightfully) believed they should be in an NY6 bowl game. I can see them not caring too, but I think Leach can rally them to show the world how stupid the CFP committee was to leave them out.

After watching several of Pitt's games (my mom's family is from/lives in Pittsburgh, so I watch a lot of games of all the local sports teams) I feel confident in saying Narduzzi doesn't have MSU defensive personnel at Pitt. If Pitt wins, it is because Pickett (their QB) plays one of those games like he did against Duke or Syracuse. Problem is 1) both of those games were at home, 2) our offense is significantly better than most offenses Pitt has seen this season (though ND turned in a rather mistake-filled performance against them, that was atypical of their form for most of the season). One may argue that Pitt's D was the reason for that, but if you look at their whole body of work, it is pretty clear to me (and also from parts of game I watched) that ND just played bad, as opposed to Pitt being a defensive juggarnaut.
I am not sure why Costello wouldn't play, but if Costello and/or JJ didn't play, then maybe I could see a more realistic chance for an upset (hence my reference to the previous Sun Bowl with Chryst). Short of that, this Pitt team is even worse than that UNC team (that had the #2 overall pick at QB), and we still beat them with Ryan Burns, who sorry to say, was about as limited as you could possibly be in that game.
Barring some significant absences, this would be by far the worst loss of the year if we lose this game.

11 out of the 13 teams Pitt played this year will be in a Bowl.
2 are in the College Football Playoff.
3 are still undefeated.
9 out of the 13 were ranked at some point this season.
Don’t let the 7-6 record fool you.

for these reasons, i think we should take the Panthers seriously.
they beat a team that is currently ranked in the top 20, and they very nearly beat Notre Dame in South Bend.
Responding to this tweet specifically, the Coastal Division of the ACC was the most mediocre division in college football (which this guy would have to know if he is being intellectually honest). Pitt lost to 2-9 UNC, whose only other win was against an FCS school Western Carolina (and UNC's season was so bad again that Fedora got fired). If we proverbially give away the game (with turnovers, penalties and other mental mistakes a la the Utah game), yes we can lose. Otherwise, Pitt got destroyed by UCF, a mediocre 7-5 Miami team (with no QB), Clemson, Penn State, and other than a win at home against Syracuse (advanced stats pretty much say Syracuse is probably not a top 25 team; more reflective of lack of quality teams outside the upper echelon, so somebody had to fill the 25 spots), they beat a bunch of 6 and 7 win teams.
Granted, maybe our wins are nothing to write home about either, but the stats and Vegas both say we are markedly better on paper. Let's see what happens.

Costello is simply not ready. Many of his throws were into tight coverage and JJ was spectacular in spearing most of them. Had a number of tipped balls yesterday. He will be more refined with another season. No doubt NFL talent. Should stay.

you may well be right.
and who knows, it may come down to turnovers. during Big Game, they said we've won every game where our defense got at least one takeaway, so let's hope for that......

As a 1977 Sun Bowl graduate, it was a hoot (Walsh, Nelson, Benjamin and Lofton) and I have a number of fellow Alums who live in and near El Paso. We spent the time in Juarez, and in those days everything in Juarez stayed in Juarez. It's probably gentrified by now, but probably not...... I'm thinking of going.

I think that is the consensus in the draft discussion I've seen, though a few places have shown him as a possible "sleeper" pick. I think Costello is very likely to stay, but you never know. If he does go pro, it would only be because he had a monster game against Pitt that somehow answered many of those questions. Two years ago, Solomon Thomas dramatically improved his draft stock with his bowl game, but Costello I think has much more room to move up.

David Shaw's introductory press conference comments -

He says that he and the team are excited about El Paso, offers perspective on the season and has a short injury update at the end. Does not sound as if we will see Kaden Smith in the Sun Bowl.

Last year the eight QB was taken in the fifth round of the draft. You really want to be in the top 3-5 to get picked in the first round.

Injury. Trying to interpret Shaw-speak, the injury does not seem to be responding to treatment very quickly. Might be a longer recovery.

Sounds like both...
Quote:On the availability of Kaden Smith:
DS: We'll see. We'll see. We were hoping to get him back for the Cal game. He was trying like crazy to get back for the Cal game, and we'll see because he hasn't really gotten close. We thought it was going to be closer than it was. These next couple weeks I think will be big for him, and then we'll see what the doctors say and we'll see what Kaden wants to do in the next couple weeks.

Trust me, you do not want to go to Juarez now.
US issues security alert for downtown Juarez
I remember reading a CNN article in Oct 2009, before our game then. A CNN reporter was embedded with the Cuidad Juarez coroner, to report on a day on the job. There were a few deaths that day, and just when he thought the day was over, there was another shooting around 11:30 PM. A drug dealer was killed. There were two other victims, teenage girls. I assumed they were caught in the crossfire. No. They were intentionally murdered because they were siblings to the drug dealer, and the cartel left a message.
That said, El Paso is on the other side of the border and is perfectly safe. I went in 2009, and other than the final score, it was a fun visit. The people of El Paso take pride in their city and went out of their way to welcome us. The pregame brunch tailgate put out by SAA then was terrific (low price, lots of bacon, intimate, got to chat with Alex Karakozoff), and I hope they do it again. The ticket prices were reasonable, our seat allocation was great (we sat on the 40, 2/3rds of the way up), and you're close to the action. Unfortunately, I can't go (have to submit my time off requests well in advance at work), but I encourage everyone else to go.

Well BC Thomas got his money but it’s doubtful if he will get a second contract from the Niners. Costello could go first round in 2020.
Hilarious in the QB room if he leaves. One left is an injury mess, another is a former walk on, the third has zero experience. If Hilinski decommitts and enrolls he could start.
Another reason to add Butter II along with McKee.
Or.... Wimbush could grad transfer in.

I think I made this exact point. There is a not completely unbelievable situation where Costello goes pro, Mills medically retires, and West is more like Nunes or Chryst than he is like Hogan or Costello and his back-up is a former walk-on. I might have made that point in your post advocating for Butterfield.
Of course Butterfield the Younger doesn't help us in fall 2019, and given history, probably doesn't help us in fall 2020. So, unless we can convince Helinksi to change his mind, if the scenario above comes to pass, we are screwed.

I guess I'll put this story here and we can keep following updates then... Although I don't (want to) see any of our students appearing here.
Quote:Back in 2016, it was a brobdingnagian controversy when LSU running back Leonard Fournette and Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, after declaring for the NFL draft, decided to skip their team’s bowl game.
At the time, both players were considered likely first-round draft choices (they both went in the top 10), and did not want to jeopardize their health with a brobdingnagian payday coming around the corner. However, the decision was viewed by many as quitting on their teams. In the years since, this practice has gotten more popular among draft prospects and public opinion has massively swayed. Though some still don’t agree with it, most completely understand what is at stake for these unpaid athletes.
This year, we will keep an updated list of the players who decide not to play in their team’s bowl game.
